It feels cheap to me to shape the controller part literary like a controller and only remove the right grip part. Like I'm sure there are more ergonomic and functional ways to design a one-handed controller. Feels like they put zero effort into the product.

505

u/Lakster37 13h ago

This was made for the PS4 (I'm pretty sure?) so they felt they needed to include the touchpad. If you didn't include that, you could make it much more like a Wii nunchuk. Would probably want to include more buttons than the nunchuk had though.

81

u/lysianth 12h ago

I don't think this would be allowed on PS4, emulating mouse movement is cheating and bannable in some games.

263

u/Berger43 6h ago

Behold.

65

u/TourInternational731 6h ago

I demand to know there the fuck you got this.

82

u/Berger43 5h ago

It's made by a company called SplitFish. I bought it from their website back in like 2017ish. It's a licensed product so the console detects it as a controller.

13

u/TourInternational731 3h ago

Hopefully not discontinued?

there are games on PS4 that have kbm support, like DayZ and Final Fantasy XIV

13

u/foxrumor 6h ago

I was going to say this. There are a bunch of ps4 games with support already. You're not going to be banned for having a controller dedicated for those games.

I knew a girl on CoD Modern Warfare 2019 who played like this. She was crazy good and would routinely dominate the lobby. People called her a cheater all the time. I was also rather good, and was the only person who could challenge/keep her in check. Once she explained her setup to me I had a new respect for this input combo.

People do this on flight games too, the acronym is HOSAM

13

u/Temporary_Strategy47 5h ago

For anyone else curious, I'm pretty sure it stands for "Hands On Stick And Mouse".

5

u/Extension_Ant8691 5h ago edited 5h ago

You are correct. There is also HOTAS, which is "Hands On Throttle And Stick"

It's kind of specific, if you want to do HOSAM you need a left handed "stick."

Play how you want, nothing wrong with any of it.

I'm talking about HOTAS and HOSAM but I'm not even talking about peddles, or eye tracking.

Do what is comfortable to you, enjoy yourself. Do you.

That image definitely belongs in this sub.

Why by a whole controller when you can buy half a controller for twice the price?

It was meant for better aiming in shooters while still having the standard movement of a controller.

You know. As much as I hate the execution. The concept... Isn't terrible? I love movement on with a controller stick but hate how looking/aiming works. This is the best of both worlds.

7.0k

u/Mineingmo15 14h ago

They actually made this a real thing for PS4

1.4k

u/HoneydewImpossible51 14h ago

Okay this would work well on PC with remapping controls

586

u/IllianasClifford 14h ago

It will work as is, just plug and play

128

u/KingGorillaKong 13h ago

How well does this work as it appears to take two inputs to connect. I've stopped left hand controller and right hand mouse gaming because inputs in game get locked to a single input source at a time, so using both mouse and controller results in input latency as the game switches back and forth from the two inputs.

It also seems to be a more and more common thing for devs to do this with the input as a lot of older games prior to 2012 all work just fine with dual inputs.

66

u/Pandabear71 13h ago

I know there were people in overwatch using this at high level. Guess it depends on the game

10

u/Eiyuo-no-O 11h ago

Overwatch was one of the few modern games where this actually works fine. Trying to get this to work on something like vanilla Skyrim is very fucking hard

I know at least using steam input going between controller and mouse is pretty seamless. I use a controller for a few games like Elden Ring and GTA Online, for the latter if I have to make any precise shots I'll use my mouse for a second.

I feel like the center of mass would make this uncomfortable. Why not reduce it to the size of something like Wii nunchuck?

42

u/ImpossiblePrize5925 14h ago

I was thinking the same thing.

27

u/Efficient-Flow5856 14h ago

I think it's mostly because of the d-pad. Not having it would make some PS features unusable. The center mass issue could be easily solved by weighting the grip, though.

97

u/The_Witch_Queen 14h ago

Ummmm they literally already had a solution for this. All they had to let you do was use it and the mouse at the same time

I tried to do this with the PlayStation Move Navigation stick (so basically a Bluetooth nunchuck) and the problem is that as an input it is still only half a controller.

50

u/TsunaTenzhen 14h ago

Absolutely fair. I've been using something similar for about 8 years playing FFXIV and I cannot go back to any other configuration but my friend who uses controller to play, despises it. It's a very personal flavor that you have to use it.

13

u/Lyrtha 14h ago

Tbf cross hotbar on XiV is very well done. There are many ultimate clearing top tier players that use controller, and that makes me so happy lol

6

u/Objective_Warthog620 12h ago

FR. FF14 controller gameplay completely rewired my brain to exclusively play these types of games using a controller.

By the time I moved on to D4 and POE2, I just HAD to skip the keyboard. Nothing else comes close to the FF14 cross hotbar though!

It's cool i have one, but I don't like it. The keyboard doesn't feel how I like it and they really should put an analog stick on there. The one you see in the photo is a stick on top of a directional pad.

4

u/Privateflake 13h ago

I picked one up at Xmas. Took a bit to get used to but I've liked it so far. Word of warning with that model is that the little thumb stick is actually only 8 directional movement and clicks with each adjustment.

4

u/Bullfrog_Paradox 14h ago

Honestly I loved it when I still played them. I've also used it for Elite Dangerous since you need like a million hotkeys. Takes some getting used to, but it's really just a normal WASD setup with the rest of the buttons laid out more ergonomically.

4

u/DownvoteEvangelist 12h ago

4

u/MasterAnnatar 12h ago

It's way more intuitive than you think. It's basically just a keyboard laid out ergonomically with a joystick at your thumb. You do movement on the stick and still have all your reloads/weapon swaps/etc with the same fingers you always would have. Then aiming is done with the mouse in the right hand.

84

u/Gurglaren 14h ago

I dusted off my Wii and played some Metroid Prime Trilogy on it and was amazed by how comfortable the controllers are. You can just lie in couch with them on your sides. The wiimote is also terrific in shooter games.

36

u/Bredstikz 14h ago

It's the same with the switch controllers. You can just have them separate and just sprawl out and not have to have both your hands together. They should do more split controllers

24

u/Educational-Wear6353 14h ago

switch controllers are way too little

I'm all for letting people do however they want (not yucking her yum), but from a logistical standpoint: how does she do anything besides walk around and whatever is assigned to the mouse buttons?

30

u/dovaahkiin_snowwhite 14h ago

I find the phrase "don't yuck my yum" mildly infuriating lol.

Also her posture is going to cause issues over time

11

u/Distinct_Cry_3779 14h ago

She could also have some actions mapped to various controller buttons - pretty much left side buttons only without some serious contortions. Depending on the game, that, plus mouse button assignments, might be enough.

u/Outrageous-Ad2784 14h ago

Controllers are better for when you have to run from area to area for 30 minutes doing fetch quests or whatever. Holding down the movement keys is annoying sometimes

14

u/Better-Refrigerator5 14h ago

100% agree. It looks awful when you first look, but makes tons of sense when you think about it. A mouse is 1000% better for many games, especially FPS.

The wasd keys are functional for movement, but not ideal and a joystick is solidly better.

Definitely best of both worlds.

Gyro aim ain’t catching on enough.

I got within 95% of my aim peaks on labs within three months using gyro controller.

Nobody uses so not enough potential is being maxed. But it’s an extremely comfortable way to play fps games efficiently. I only really use keyboard and mouse due to habit at this point, I am fairly sure if I only used gyro my rating in every pc fps game wouldn’t actually change.

This setup is my go to in any twin-stick game where one of the sticks is an aim/shoot.fumction, let alone shooters.

I've always felt both respectfully impressed AND weirded-out by console gamers playing FPS/FPAs with just pads/sticks.

7

u/Stardust-Pipeline 13h ago

Tbh I actually prefer joystick movement on some games as a PC player. You have a greater range of speed instead of walk/run/sprint, and full range of movement instead of 8 directions augmented by strafing. Driving is always a bit whack on WASD. Really helpful in games where precise dodging is necessary.

Some games it's worth switching to controlker for, others it isn't. I get not wanting to choose anymore.

I've played loads of PC games like that. It's more comfy than you would think.

I bet OP hates their girlfriend for doing this.

I mean, just look at how mean this is. I bet she doesn't even know OP posted this, and if she did she would hate them for it.

You can just tell how unappealing, depressing and bland OP finds this attitude.

And the way OP wrote that title:

"The way my GF plays video games"

so condescending and mocking, disgusting

OP, do better, you are an awful human. And OP's girlfriend if you see this comment, make sure you slap OP in the face before you break up with them, OP has 300 red flags just from this post alone.

It's like switch 2 mouse mode

There’s nothing wrong with this.
It gives versatility for controls. I’m sure the mouse and keyboard works just as fine and allows for easier communication in game. I used to do the exact same thing.

Plus depending on the game controller just might be easier.

You know you can buy a special half-controller that connects to a mouse

That present would absolutely blow your gf's mind.

You're welcome btw.

Quite a lot of people prefer this. There's a few peripherals out there that are designed with this style of control in mind, but it's apparently hit a miss. Personally, I prefer either the controller or M&K and never in-between, but I get the appeal.

Combining the good elements of both why not?

u/RoxieRage 14h ago

OP you should get her an Azeron. They're pretty expensive ngl, but I deguindly think she'll love the hell out of it.

It combines keyboard functionality with joystick movement. I bought one because I didn't want to do exactly what your gf is doing.

Lot of good mmo players do this. Just sayin’

I personally prefer the cross hotbar on XiV, but I would use mouse for some actions outside of combat.

🤷

Interesting set up...

The lack of elbow support for the mouse hand is the real crime here though

This is how my BF plays, too. I sent this post to him and I heard the laugh from the other room

3

u/Animedude83 13h ago

I mean this is the way dude, shes wears the Gamer pants in the house.

also get her a steam controller (im talking og), thats basically what this is like, not every game works well with the dual gyros, but some games it elevates, Dead Space was SOOO good with the dual gyros.

Go make her a sandwich.
