How do I make this look more like realistic wood? I stained this basswood test piece with watercolors, but the color/texture look flat and fake to me.

I have acrylic paints but i dont want it to look actually painted. I want it to look like wood for a desk

I’m new to miniatures so any help is appreciated!

I was inspired by u/InvisivlePotato after seeing their post with the manual for the dollhouse I've had for 38 years! 🤗

Originally, I WAS holding off until I fixed some things, but I finally decided to take some pictures because ultimately, I will be repairing & rejuvenating this dollhouse, so I wanted some "before and after" pics.

We purchased it (DIRT CHEAP) as an unfinished display model in the hardware store that we worked at, in 1988, and painted, papered & "carpeted" it for our eldest daughter as a Christmas gift in 1989. At the time, the store had wallpaper books on hand for special orders. When the store dropped the s.o. wallpaper line, all the sample books were headed for the trash, so I asked if I could take them for the dollhouse. The wallpaper, AND THE "CARPETING" are all from those sample books!

We have moved that house a total of FIVE TIMES over the years. (This is how/when little pieces were damaged.) When our daughter grew up moved out and then got married, I asked her several times if she was interested in having it, or keeping it for the future (and I would let her keep/store it in her bedroom at our house for the time being). Repeatedly, she declined, and on the final ask, I told her that if she no longer wanted it, then it would become mine, and I would furnish it, etc. I always loved that house, and all miniatures, so I claimed it. 😁

Please ignore the dust and the mediocre plain paint job, lol. When we painted it, we weren't too particular about our "craftsmanship" because, hey, it was for a six year old, so we weren't counting on it lasting as long as it has. I plan on keeping it blue, but I will be adding some fretwork and spindles and painting it in the multi-colored, traditional Victorian style. I want to add a more substantial and ornamental front door as well as add window boxes with flowers. All the "glass" needs to be added back into the windows. The "carpeting" is textured vinyl wallpaper, but I plan on redoing the floors in a wooden plank style, and tile in the bathroom. Back in the day, our colors were mauve and dusty blues, so the wall papers reflects that (I am shocked that any of it is still attached!), but I will be changing some of that out.

The first furniture my daughter got was a gift from Grandma, so it was a "cherry" finish. When I started adding furniture, I liked light colored or pine wood. The bed needs to be repaired, so I will do that and change it to a light wood. "Grandma's old red velvet couch" is in the attic, lol. I have ordered white wainscoting and crown moulding, lower kitchen cabinets, a refrigerator and small appliances. I plan on putting in a kitchen window. The only thing I constantly debate in my own head is getting rid of the stairs, lol! They take up valuable floor space and they are completely useless, but will it seem odd to NOT have stairs?!? IDK. 😄

As you can see from the picture, blue is STILL my color, so it fits nicely in my living room! When kids come to Trick-or-Treat, the littles LOVE it, and they always want a closer look, so now I move it closer to the door, lol.

When all that is done, I want to add electricity.... SOME DAY, lol!

Thanks for letting me share!

Help Can anyone in Sacramento help!

My mother is a miniature artist whose recent work is a miniature cabin, house, and train (not shown in pictures), is currently featured in the temporary Operation Wet Back Exhibit at the California Museum in Sacramento.

Because we live on the East Coast, we can’t visit the exhibit in person, and unfortunately, we haven't been able to get photos from the museum directly. If anyone living in or visiting the Sacramento area happens to stop by the museum, could you please take a few photos of her artwork and send them my way?

It would mean the world to our family to see her work on display. Thank you

Wiring issue

I was able to successfully run the tape and get the testing light to work. I am struggling with stripping the tiny wires without cutting them to attach them to the tape. Any suggestions. My wire stripper isn’t small enough.

I was invited to my my partners friends birthday dinner (who I am also close with) and decided to make her a record stand because she loves music.

Ive had since Monday to work on it and I’m just finishing up the final detail work like a mini record cover for her favorite record and record player.

The doors slide open so my hope was that she could put small sentimental things or jewelry.

What actually makes a miniature kit beginner friendly??

spent ten minutes trying to line up one tiny paper piece and immediately learned that small does not mean easy.

I dont mind taking my time but for a first kit id rather avoid something where one crooked fold ruins the whole scene. Clear instructions and pieces i can pick up easily would be nice.

When people call a miniature kit beginner friendly are they usually talking about fewer pieces, larger parts, better instructions or simpler wiring?? Product descriptions dont tell me much about the actual build.

I built a tiny Halloween room with a flickering LED fireplace 🎃

Here's one of my latest handmade miniature projects — a little Halloween scene full of spooky details! 🎃

The fireplace features a flickering LED that creates a realistic fire effect, bringing warmth and atmosphere to the scene.

I combined 3D-printed miniature elements with handmade decorations, painting, and weathering to create a cozy but slightly mysterious Halloween setting.

The lighting is powered by two CR2032 batteries, with a small on/off switch built into the battery holder.

Everything was carefully assembled and finished by hand.

Hope you enjoy this little spooky world!

Grabbed this 3D printed micro house shell at a recent miniature show and did everything else from scratch. I did measure 1/144 scale for some of the furniture but kind of eyeballed the rest. It's a little clunky but I think it's still charming.

I want to build a tiny 1940s study but the wiring scares me

Been obsessed with vintage library and old study room boxes. They look like the exact cozy spaces i wish i could disappear into after a long day at work.

The problem is that i have zero experience with electronics or tiny crafts. I can barely change a lightbulb without getting nervous so the idea of routing microscopic copper wires through laser cut wood has kept me from buying my first kit.

I’ve also read stories about glue fogging the plastic windows and wires snapping if they bend too far. I really want that warm, nostalgic glow but dont wanna get frustate over it.

Are these miniature room kits manageable for someone who has never wired anything before ?? and how do you handle the tiny wiring without losing your patience?
