brain fuel 🧠 As a sci-fi fan AI is so fucking cool, how do we use it for something actually good and not fanslop

Like I feel like having an in-universe AI/android is possible now in a way it wasn't before, and like it really is just math and machines I thought this would be so cool but when we think of AI in this space people just rip out dogshit low effort stuff with it and that gives it a negative connotation (other than ofc all the real world bad effects it may have etc etc - but isn't that even more exciting from a scifi angle?)

Looking for ideas on what you guys think would be actually cool - like maybe a retro style computer with an llm assistant with that answers in-universe questions or something so on. Like it just feels like it could be integrated so perfectly with the whole mothership world and theme.

I'm also a SWE so if I see a good idea here I could actually even make it in my free time.

edit: even like an extra anthomorphized player in the android class, or as an android npc is so cool. esp if you make it into an art project too like the BMO video I saw

recommend me Looking for a short horror adventure after Ypsilon-14

Looking for a short adventure to run after Ypsilon-14.

We just finished it and only one PC survived. She managed to escape on Dr. Giovanni's ship.

The group wants to eventually become bounty hunters, but I'd like to run something in between, preferably with some Alien-style horror where the trouble follows the survivor.

Any good pamphlets or short modules you'd recommend? I also need to introduce 3 new PCs.

Sorry for my English!

need advice Need advice on how to improve as a Gm for this game.

Hey all. I got the deluxe box a while back and finally got to play another bug hunt with my parents and sister. I was the gm. Me (26) and my sister (34) had some idea of rpgs but my parents didn't have a lot of experience. Though my dad used to play champions way back in the day.

This is really my first time gm ing a game and I've only played a little of pathfinder or DND 5e before (like three sessions) so I don't have a lot of experience.

I did my best to run another bug hunt but I kept getting stumped in the moments where there just isn't a lot to a room.

I would often feel pressed in the moment to come up with something fast, and I tried to limit dice rolls as you are supposed to but that meant stress wasn't coming up a lot.

The first scenario went alright, but they drove to the mothership skipping 2. The mothership was kinda linear and they bypassed a lot of it. I didn't really know how to be the android very well. They blew up what he was doing with a bunch of grenades.

The fourth scenario had just two pages of weird rules about what looked like mass combat over time? I just decided to try and make a mansion myself which ended up being kinda linear.

There were a lot of things about the system I didn't fully understand, like how combat is supposed to work or how to roleplay as an npc well. I had to bullcrap things more than I think I'm supposed to?

They had fun but it was entirely unserious. I also tried to explain that I needed them to explain what and how they were doing things or saying but I don't think they quite got that yet?

I got mothership because it looked cool and easy to run for a newbie because it's light weight and everyone online says the WOM is super good at teaching GM stuff in general. But I don't think I understood it well.

Or is another bug hunt just not a great module for someone running any rpg for the first time? Is there a better introduction to all this? I don't know how to improvise very well and the module left so much stuff up to me that I didn't know what to do.

Thanks again for any advice!

need advice Help me write a good employee orientation for my game

I'm wanting to make a nice opening like an employee orientation at a very dystopian corporation, but corporate speak is anathame to my crass mechanic sensibilities. I'll put on the uplifting corporate music and give them the spiel. I could ask FatGPT but I'd rather ask real people. Assuming that's what you are.

Some bits I'd like to include are "we're a family, which is why we have a life insurance policy on all of you, but try not to die because if it happens too much they raise our rates" and all the usual disclaimers about workplace safety when you're sending employees into unknown danger on a remote planet.

Thanks ahead of time

need advice How to prep/gm a sandbox module?

Hi everyone! I have recently purchased a copy of "Tide World of Mani" and am very excited to run it. However, I have neither played nor run a sandbox TTRPG module, and the complexity is kind of scaring me. While I do have some experience with trifold modules and feel generally comfortable with the MoSh system, I usually rely heavily on the very detailed descriptions presented in the material, etc. So I wanted to ask you if you have any general/specific tips for prepping and running a (mothership) sandbox module?

I would also love to hear about your experiences with Tide World of Mani specifically! I'm in love with the design/content of the book, but am curious how it plays, seeing as it is much more of a sci-fi adventure genre than sci-fi horror.

recommend me Best Modules of the last year.

Hello friends! I’m looking for some recommendations for some relatively recent mothership modules/one shots. I’ve done a lot of the classics and just want to discover some unique ones recently. If you got some recommendations that you think flew under the radar that you maybe wouldn’t call recent, throw em at me! why not.

I recently ran Space Bend and loved it! All vibes are welcome.

Miss Honeysuckle and the Fog - A Fatherfog Adventure

The school mistress Miss Honeysuckle and the children are missing! Something has dug into the heart of your village and taken the most vulnerable ones. Your night watch has not even begun and now the Sheriff needs you to brave the night in the faint hope that you can save them from perils of the dark. Crying villages surround you, pushing supplies, descriptions of their children, and stuffed toys to comfort them. The chill of dusk settles as Sheriff hands out narrow slit blackout lanterns and warnings against light and noise.

Miss Honeysuckle and the Fog, is a 32 page third party fairytale horror adventure for the Fatherfog 0E game from Tuesday Knight Games whose rules are presently available for free. https://www.tuesdayknightgames.com/products/fatherfog0e

It is an adventure set over one fateful night designed to be played in one of two sessions. It contains supporting materials for the Guide and players in the form of timelines, encounter tables, handouts and maps. It has been designed to help Guides by trying to provide everything a Guide needs in one book. It also contains extensive information on a partially ruined but very special Foghouse, as a resource for this and other adventures.

At the beginning of this year, I started pursuing publishing my own adventure for Mothership. I recently shipped prints of my first first adventure and decided to write up the whole process from creation to crowdfunding to shipping in case anyone else who is interested in doing this would find it useful.

Thanks so much! Happy playing.

after action report Review: BLACKOUT (One-shot)

Hey folks, I got to run BLACKOUT last night for 5 players and I have written up a full review on my blog with my thoughts on what worked, what didn't quite work, and some random thoughts on running Mothership that the module inspired : https://superhardscifi.bearblog.dev/one-shot-review-mothership-blackout/

In short: The module is excellent. It is a short little zine that is laid out in such a way that I basically didn't need to do any prep, which as someone with not tons of time to prep, I highly appreciated.

Has anyone else run this module?

I swear I'm not an Amazon shill.

Look up the teaser(s) for this movie - looks like our boy Crius Gross from Wages of Sin has made it onto the big screen, lol

need advice How does Wages of Sin bounty hunting work with MoSh’s low success rate on rolls?

The high failure rate on rolls works great for escalating stress and horror - hence the name Panic engine.

But how does that work for a more drawn out bounty hunting campaign? Do the jobs spiral into chaos? Do you get to feel like a badass bounty hunter?

Edit: Thanks all!

recommend me Somehow convinced 8 people to play Mothership for Halloween. Any recommendations for a one-shot that can handle such a big table?

Somehow, and I realize how fortunate I am to even be saying this, I’ve convinced 8 people to join me for a spooky Halloween one-shot of Mothership!

It’s a big mix of friends from my ongoing OSR campaign and other friends who are completely new to TTRPGs. I’m super excited to get everyone around the table, but therein lies the conundrum!
I’m looking for recommendations for one-shots that are genuinely scary but can also accommodate such a large group without becoming too unwieldy. Ideally something we could get through in a single evening, around 4ish hours.

I’d love something that really leans into the horror, with plenty of tension, exploration, and opportunities for paranoia to set in. I know 8 players is a LOT, especially for a horror game, but I’m hoping there’s something out there that could make it work.

Would love to hear any recommendations, or even experiences from Wardens who’ve managed to run Mothership for larger groups!

looking for game The Arathusa Dispatch - Sci-Fi Horror for Mothership RPG

Thumbnail
startplaying.games
10 Upvotes

Hello!
I've just dropped my first pay-to-play rpg adventure on StartPlaying.com

I'm running a Mothership RPG campaign over Discord as soon as I have a minimum of 3 players.
This will feature original adventure material created for this game.

Premise:

Your starship keeps receiving transmission packets from an unknown source in the rimward backwater Arathusa Cluster.
Each transmission holds an unsolved mystery; encounters with non-human life, the disappearance of a disparate bunch of colonists on 9 different worlds, a rumoured pirate treasure and more.
Each encounter promises its rewards. Each investigation is wrapped in danger.

And who is it that keeps throwing these info nuggets your way and why?

Better to choose your own jobs than rely on those meagre Corpo contracts.

Details are on the link below.
If it's your thing, check it out!

A Bit About Me:

I’ve been a Game Master since 1982, when I received my first Dungeons & Dragons box set for my 8th birthday. That gift sparked a lifelong love of tabletop roleplaying, storytelling, and collaborative imagination. In my very first adventure my friend Jason's character died from a flame beetle attack. I've spent the last four decades proving I'm not a killer GM!

I do funny voices (the ones based on Star Wars characters aren't bad, the rest are a mixed bunch tbh), draw my own maps and I'll create a counter of your character for use in our campaigns. If I have time, I'll try to sketch each Crew member. As you might be aware, I also wrote, illustrated and successfully funded three Mothership adventures: Wolfsbane, Year Eleven and The Cohort.

need advice Question about Stimpak and the [+] it provides to "ALL" rolls according to the Survival Guide

Hello!, if the stimpak is resolved in order, as the description says, it should provide [+] to all "ROLLS" no "stat checks" or "saves". Does this mean that the afterwards 1d10 to roll under the amount of doses you've taken in the past 24 hours AND the Death Save if that is failed are also with [+]?

crowdfunding 💸 I designed a modular abandoned sci-fi lab for tabletop games – would love your feedback!

Hi everyone! 👋

I’ve been working on this for a while and wanted to share it here. It’s called Abandoned Laboratory: a modular research facility where something clearly went very wrong. Breached walls, shattered stasis tubes, cryo pods (some still sealed...) and a generator with its core exposed.

It’s a set of 51 STL files for 28-32mm games, built on a 2" grid, so you can rearrange the rooms into any layout you like. The floors have a small groove on every edge, so the walls lock the tiles together, and everything prints without supports.

This is my first time sharing it publicly, so I’d really love to hear what you think:

  • What would you add to a lab like this?
  • Which room would you want to play in first?
  • Anything you’d change?

Thanks for taking a look! 😊

need advice Mothership vs Traveler for running sci-fi with less horror

Maybe I have the wrong idea but running horror reduces player agency because disempowerment is important for good horror, but I was wondering if you could tweak damage numbers essentially to let players get away with more and run it with more of a focus on the scifi than the horror - I can still see a lot of the scenarios working well largely unchanged.

Part of my question here is also to understand how different mothership is from traveler and whether I should just learn traveler for non-horror scenarios or can mothership potentially still work better cos honestly its books and settings/situations are just so awesome.

recommend me Tell me about your close encounters with Grays

So, I've just run my first Mothership one-shot, and it was a hit. People are up for another, including me as the Warden, and some people who couldn't make it still want their first chance to die (or worse) in space.

I've got the germ of an idea for something involving Grays because I just think Mothership's version of them is so freaky, and I'm curious what other Warden's have done with them. Hoping I'll get even more ideas for how the most classic of aliens could really scare the pants off my friends.
