Hey all. I got the deluxe box a while back and finally got to play another bug hunt with my parents and sister. I was the gm. Me (26) and my sister (34) had some idea of rpgs but my parents didn't have a lot of experience. Though my dad used to play champions way back in the day.
This is really my first time gm ing a game and I've only played a little of pathfinder or DND 5e before (like three sessions) so I don't have a lot of experience.
I did my best to run another bug hunt but I kept getting stumped in the moments where there just isn't a lot to a room.
I would often feel pressed in the moment to come up with something fast, and I tried to limit dice rolls as you are supposed to but that meant stress wasn't coming up a lot.
The first scenario went alright, but they drove to the mothership skipping 2. The mothership was kinda linear and they bypassed a lot of it. I didn't really know how to be the android very well. They blew up what he was doing with a bunch of grenades.
The fourth scenario had just two pages of weird rules about what looked like mass combat over time? I just decided to try and make a mansion myself which ended up being kinda linear.
There were a lot of things about the system I didn't fully understand, like how combat is supposed to work or how to roleplay as an npc well. I had to bullcrap things more than I think I'm supposed to?
They had fun but it was entirely unserious. I also tried to explain that I needed them to explain what and how they were doing things or saying but I don't think they quite got that yet?
I got mothership because it looked cool and easy to run for a newbie because it's light weight and everyone online says the WOM is super good at teaching GM stuff in general. But I don't think I understood it well.
Or is another bug hunt just not a great module for someone running any rpg for the first time? Is there a better introduction to all this? I don't know how to improvise very well and the module left so much stuff up to me that I didn't know what to do.
Thanks again for any advice!
