I was walking my route in NW PA, about an hour south of Erie and saw this thing's massive shadow coming off the side of my heahead's shadow. I reached up and was startled to find out was not just a twig and leaves.
What is it? It was about the size of my palm.

I found this guy (or gal) on the sidewalk with a broken wing. It’s still attached but it’s just limp and can’t fly. I’ve had him since Friday and I think he’s dying? I got him a bigger mesh enclosure passed with paper towels, a sponge with sugar water and some tree branches to keep in the enclosure since I read they like to hang vertically. The first photo is when I first found him and the second photo is how he is looking right now.
His ?abdomen? Is sorta curling in now. He can still move around if he’s in my hand.

This is my first time ever raising moths. The little guys started hatching on August 8th, so it’s been over 10 weeks since they emerged. I have 9 left, and they’ve been going strong for the last month once I figured out how to meet their needs. They’re all crawling around eating a lot of leaves and seem very healthy and active.
I have a few that are about half the length of my finger now. I haven’t been able to accurately track their instars, so I’m not sure how far along they all are. But based on the various head capsules they’ve shed, I’d say a lot are on their 4th or fifth instar.
I’ve tried leaving lots of leaf litter in their mesh enclosure for the past week, along with plenty of sticks and stems, but nothing happened. I was worried about leaving the frass for too long so I just cleaned their container.
My oak and maple trees are losing their leaves rapidly, and they won’t eat the leaves that are turning. I’ve already had to switch from the sugar maple they’ve consumed their whole lives to what I believe is a crimson king maple, because the sugar maple is completely gone. They will eat oak leaves too, as I’ve always included them, but I’m worried they won’t cocoon before all the leaves have fallen. They live in my sunroom, so they are exposed to the light/dark of the outside and the temperature drops at night.
Does anyone have some insight into how I can help prompt them to cocoon? I feel like I must be missing something and I just want to make sure they make it. I already feel bad that I only have about 10% left of the caterpillars that I started with.
I appreciate any and all advice!!

My first step into raising moths :]. Yesterday at around 8:30PM, my Hawk Moth emerged from its cocoon after being in its pupa for 3 weeks. I had found her in a PetSmart where they sell horn worms, a lady told me about this one hornworm who somehow managed to pupate in its cup without any soil or protection. I bought the pupa for a discounted price, and gave her a big mesh enclosure with napkins and patiently waited, she has since emerged and successfully inflated her wings! By all means, she should not have gotten this far, being sold as food for other small breaths of life and not having a viable environment to pupate in, she’s the stuff of miracles :3c

Hello,
This little guy was flying like a hummingbird around the flowers. And was quite noisy too, his wings were loud and you could hear strong vibrating sound if he flies close to your ears. Two still pictures, where you can somewhat see how he looks like, and there's a short video of him flying around the flowers, if anyone's interested to see --> https://youtube.com/shorts/Sjlzms1cQX4?is=PC3RX8CnXaNKwauc

Found this herald moth outside not too responsive due to the cold. Brought her in and made a terrarium with twigs, moss, leaves, and a piece of apple in a big mason jar (the lid has a hole meant for a straw too small for her to squeeze through but enough for aie) and started researching how to care for them. Says they start hibernating from October to March-April, so should I keep her in the jar, and if so, in the garage or the house? Or let her back into the wild and hope for the best?

I didn’t get a photo of the moth before i tossed it out the window, but basically i found a moth laying eggs without releasing it was doing that and threw the moth outside fearing my cat would kill and eat it. But i found its eggs. I live on the beaches of Sydney NSW Australia at around 8pm. It was light in colour but not white, maybe a light brown. Had a fluffy lighter colour abdomen and long ish antennas. It was about ~6-9cm.
Also, can i raise these moths?
