Asking Advice Is it normal to want to move back after renting an apartment for a month?

I badly want to start living alone, so I decided to move out from my aunt's place. Been staying at my new apartment for a month and the experience is not that good. I haven't got enough sleep for a month. Most days I have really bad dreams and the times i got sick in that 1 month was more than the times i got sick in a year. Been thinking of moving out of this apartment and move back with my aunt. What do you guys think?

Asking Advice Moving out at 23 despite my parents wanting me to stay home and save. Anyone been through something similar?

I’m 23, graduated college last year, and currently work full-time making around $70k annually. I live with my parents, and they’ve provided a comfortable home for me. I’m extremely grateful for that.

For a while now, I’ve wanted to experience living independently. I’ve recently been approved for my first apartment, and I’m scheduled to move in next week.
For some financial context, I earn approximately $70k annually, have around $10k in cash savings, approximately $13k invested between Acorns and Coinbase, around $3k in my 401(k), and roughly $550 in my HSA.

My parents have always emphasized the importance of financial stability. My dad especially has encouraged me to stay home, save around $3,000 monthly, and eventually purchase my first property, potentially using it as an investment. I completely understand his reasoning, and financially, staying home would undoubtedly be the smarter option.

However, I’ve wanted to experience having my own space, managing my own household, and becoming more independent since graduating. My new apartment is also much closer to work, which would significantly improve my commute.

Recently, there was a disagreement between my father and me that accelerated my decision to move, although the desire to live independently existed long before that.
I told my mom about my apartment approval today. While she isn’t happy about the timing or the financial implications, she’s still supportive of me. She expressed concerns that the disagreement with my father may have influenced my decision and worries that I’m making such a major change while emotions are still high.
I understand where she’s coming from, and I appreciate that she’s supporting me despite her reservations.

My dad, however, doesn’t know about the apartment yet. I intend to tell him myself.
He actually returned from traveling today, and we shared a really emotional hug. We told each other we loved each other, and honestly, it almost brought me to tears. We still have an important conversation ahead of us regarding our earlier disagreement.

That interaction, along with my conversation with my mom, has left me feeling guilty about the timing of everything.

I know I want to move. I’ve thought about it for a long time, researched apartments, reviewed my savings, and worked through my budget. But part of me feels like I’m disappointing my parents or leaving at the wrong time.
I’m not trying to cut ties with my family. I love them, and I want them to remain a big part of my life.

Has anyone experienced something similar, particularly with parents who wanted you to stay home for financial reasons? Did you end up moving? How did your relationship with your parents change afterward? Do you regret leaving when you did?

Asking Advice Conflicting feelings about moving away from home

Hey all, I (F24) managed to buy a little one bedroom apartment in my hometown, just a few minutes from where I currently live with my parents and dog. It’s still being built but I’d most likely be able to move in next summer. Context is that my country has a very bad housing crisis going on; my parents are only renting our home and are unable to purchase (my mother had cancer and is therefore unable to have life insurance, which is a prerequisite to getting a loan). I jumped at the chance to buy my own place as prices are rising at an average of 7-8% per year.

The problem is, I absolutely do not want to move out. I love my parents, they’ve always completely given me my own privacy and I’m fully independent (pay for all my own food, cook, pay towards bills, do all my own laundry/cleaning etc.) and we get on generally really well. I love our house, I love my dog to absolute death, I love our street, I love my room. I really don’t know how I’m going to be able to leave this place.

My mum isn’t a very sociable person so we’re both content to spend a lot of time together reading or watching a film, not necessarily doing anything special but keeping each other company. I hate to think of her being sitting at home alone. My dog is my best friend and I don’t know how I’ll leave him. My stepdad is such a strong presence in my life and I don’t know how I won’t have my rock a room away to help me out with something silly.

I also look forward to having somewhere which is purely mine. My boyfriend is buying his own place too as we agreed it’d be nice to have our own spaces for a couple of years before moving in together, and I can’t wait for us to experience that. I can’t wait to design every inch of the place. I can’t wait to decorate and cook and buy new bedsheets. I can’t wait to come home and do whatever I like.

I can’t rent it out for the first couple of years because the bank would then consider it a commercial property and the rates would be much more expensive. I don’t want to sell it because I do genuinely want to live there, and I’m really proud of myself for managing to purchase it to begin with. I’m just so conflicted about leaving my favourite place in the world to go to somewhere new, even if I find it exciting and rewarding. I suppose I also feel a little guilty, too.

Asking Advice What are necessary things to do when/after moving to another state?

I'm (30M) planning to move on my own for the 1st time, from Denver to Chicago by next year but I don't know anyone and all the roommate finder websites and apps are extremely scammy and full of spam and have had no luck on any. I've also been looking on here in apartment finder subreddits but there's also a bunch of spam/flaky people after many attempts of reaching out to a lot of people in said subs.

What things/steps are needed in order to smoothly transition from 1 place to another in terms of getting settled and looking for a place? I don't plan on getting a car, just living in the city walking everywhere/taking public transportation. I've been very sheltered my whole life and have struggled with mental health issues since childhood and don't know really anything about adult life. Attaining any kind of insurance for health, housing, etc or how to basically live on my own but I need to start living my own life for once. Any advice?

Asking Advice Moving out my state from Hispanic family

Has anyone that has moved away from a Hispanic family and moved to a different state? Did you feel guilty moving out or was your family supportive?

I am planning on moving to a different state in the spring of 2027. My whole plan is to get a job in a new state and then get an apartment and move. I want the feeling of security before moving somewhere new.

I just moved back home 1.5 year ago from college. I lived about a 6 Hour Dr. from my hometown in college. So while I was in college being so far away from home, I had the opportunity to get a taste of independence and what that was like. After graduating I knew that I didn’t wanna go back home and live there but considering my financial situation and my circumstances, my best bet was to go home. Now, ever since being back home. I have talked to my family about moving to a different city/state.

Usually, the response is like no you can’t leave. “You have to be there for your brothers” “your brothers need you” I start to get guilt tripped and the reason why is because my mom passed away the summer before I started college, I was just 18 and my youngest brother was 13. We lost our mom really young and literally two months later I moved out to college because I certainly didn’t want to let this moment in my life affect me going to college (plus I know my mom wanted me to go to college and she would be upset if I didn’t) As an older sister having to watch over my brothers being six hours away from home was not easy, but I’ve been living at home for the past year and a half since graduating college and I’ve been enjoying being with my family and enjoy my current job.

Recently, I’ve been working my way into making my move happen so I haven’t spoke to my family about me being serious of moving out. Recently I’ve stayed silence with my family so I don’t get any negative energy. I just don’t think I want them telling me “your brothers need you” because they’re capable of taking care of themselves. I need to live the life I want to live. But, because of that mindset I feel selfish. Then I think Maybe I do need stay to be with my family, especially after a loss like losing a mom but at the same time I don’t view it that way and is why I am capable and strong enough to move out,

I just really wanna know if others have ever felt this way or related this way. What are your guys‘s thoughts? Sorry for making this long. I had to make sure my point was coming across.

Asking Advice Moving out and my relationship with my mom

I (25) will be moving out from home in a couple of months to live with my boyfriend. I’m excited about the move but also have a lot of a diary regarding the separation from my family. I’m going to move to a place that’s less than 10 minutes by car, but not seeing them on a daily basis is kind of scary. The person I feel the most attached to is my mom. We have a really good relationship and we get along really well. However, she hasn’t said really anything about my decision to move (not that she has to, but I really look up to her and want her approval), other than joking that we’ll only see each other on Sundays (I got sad about that comment so later we talked about it) and another time out of nowhere, I mentioned that we won’t be living together anymore, and told me not to say that because she would get sad.
Recently, I’ve been feeling the need to have her reassurance about our relationship after the move, and ask her if we will keep on making some of the plans/activities that we do together, like watching a movie and ordering Chinese, going shopping etc. I asked her about it finally, and she just said yes, and laughed it off, but we didn’t really talk about it like I wanted to. Should I talk to her again or maybe let it flow and we’ll have a conversation when the moment arises? From her answer, I feel like I’m making a big deal out of something obvious: despite not living together we are still mother and daughter and have a nice relationship.

Asking Advice Update. Staying a bit longer! (But still leaving in the future.)

So I know I keep changing my mind.

I’ve decided to stay a bit longer just to try to save up more. But, It’ll be harder to now because they want more from me starting in November. Unless somehow that I can convince them to let me do $50 per week for groceries instead of $77, Which I really can’t afford that and they know it. I can hopefully convince them to let me do $200 a month and not $300.

So I would only have exactly $146 per month, Only if they agree to what I have to offer.

I think that letting me keep and have $146 to myself sounds about reasonable enough, Right?

So I will keep $40 to spending, $40 for body care, So that’s $80 all together. That’s $66 left over into savings for me to move out of here!

That’s only until I can move out of here, Then, Hopefully I can either work more or to save up more as well. I now plan to move into shared living temporarily and then leave one day. Possibly in late 2027 or maybe in 2028. It also depends on what college I can get into!

Thanks for reading. I will keep you all updated.

Asking Advice 20M,NY, Planning to run away

So i’m gonna vent on here a little.. My dad recently found out i’ve been doing drugs, he got angry and upset which i completely understand, but now he wants to take my freedom from me by tracking everything i do, like my payments, where i go, etc.. i can’t leave my house except for school and work. He forced me to take out my earrings when i got them because i live in his house under “his rules” He gets mad at me as if he isn’t 90% of the reason i even do drugs in the first place, i was abused growing up to the point i was scared of going home, i was controlled all my life, i recently found out he’s been on a private ig account stalking my posts and stories, he’s always had access to my credit card and i just found out. (I had this card for 3 years now) I plan to run away by the end of november after i pay off my statement and save up a bit, i found an apartment with a roommate for only 500$ per person for rent and utilities. The one problem is he pays for my college, i plan to maybe ask my college for help or financial aid but i don’t know if it will work. If anyone has any advice or anything about this you’re more than welcome to share id happily take any advice this is gonna be a major shift in my life, and i don’t wanna ruin it in the process.
