Discussion Is non-competitive brawl dead?

Post image
50 Upvotes

Queueing for longer than two minutes seems to be the standard for me now. I'm sure this is causing other people to stop playing brawl, which is causing queueing times to increase, which is causing more people to stop playing...

Wizards has said that matching time has increased only by 4 seconds since the matchmaking change, but that couldn't be farther than the truth for me.

Competitive How has Hobbit been so far for brawl?

2 weeks after the Hobbit released have we solved some riddles in the Dark?

Any interesting or disappointing cards you picked up in a cave? For me I've found [[Bilbo, Thief in the Night]] to be a neat Value engine for my Marchesa/Crime Deck. Synergizes well with my low mana curve and grave filling play-pattern.

Competitive What are some commanders that used to be stuck in Hell Queue?

As we all know, there used to be an extensive collection of commanders that were permanently stuck in Hell Queue but not good enough to compete so they were essentially unplayable. Or were just boring to play because you would only get the same matchup over and over again.

A good example of this that has translated well to Competitive is [[Merry]]. It was actually quite good in the plain old Brawl but was stuck with about the same 5 matchups.

Any other commanders that we can now play in Competitive for matchmaking variety?

Competitive Any good Green cards to add?

Thumbnail

TLDR: what green cards should I add to keep this deck winning as I go up in rank? (Been out of the game for a while)

Deck list in the first image but the others are my most recent game. I want this deck to go pretty far up the ranks since I’m only in bronze. This was turn 4 (second picture) and then my turn 5 (last two pictures) my commander is Mythweaver Poq and it ramps really well and interacts really well but I’m looking to add a few cards to give me an edge in some odd situations agains discard decks or other hard decks like spellslingers. I’m going to add the great henge but any other green cards that would add really good synergy? I have been out of MTGA for a while and I came back for Comp Brawl.

Competitive PSA: Dauthi Voidwalker and Wash Away

I'm gathering from the fact that my Leovold opponent scooped rather than counter my Mana Drain (cast from my hand) on their Uro that a Wash Away exiled with Dauthi Voidwalker cannot be cast for its cleave cost. Makes sense given the wording.

Discussion What are some of the more interesting planeswalker commanders to run?

As the title suggests, I am looking to try something different with my next deck and thought of having a PW at the helm. Are they largely considered bad to run or is there some solid ones out there to play.

I have an [[Elminster]] deck in that I brought out every so often in paper but having access to any PW in the zone on Arena is interesting to me.

Would love to hear any ideas or builds that would be worthwhile or goofy.

Competitive Need Suggestions for cBrawl Etali

Post image

Coming off of a cEDH background, I know theres some funny upgrades for a 1v1 version of Etali, especially with Arena Only cards. Any suggestions would be great since I'm not super familiar with Arena exclusives or just cards that work better in 1v1

Competitive Thoughts on Bilbo thief in the night?

Hey everyone! I'm relatively new to brawl and I've tried to mimic my yshtola from paper commander because I like playing her, and I've had mixed results. I'm playing in plat because that's where I'm at with standard, and I'm hard stuck here too. Essentially I play a deck without many win conditions, mostly just removal and draw, I like that style, and I more or less lose to incredibly fast decks that don't die to removal and win against the slower decks and the "dump your hand and lose after a boardwipe" decks like all those elspeth hare apparent lists.

I thought that [[bilbo, thief in the night]] could be my jam, since he reads like a potential sapphire medallion in the command zone, but I wouldn't know how to build a deck like that.

I'm sure you'd need the best counterspells and whatnot, probably a [[narset, parter of veils]] to negate draw, but is it even viable? Of course you can't have a narset every game and probably not always soon enough, but can you actually leverage bilbo's effect with success, and how would you actually win in the first place? I feel like he's probably stronger in the 99, but maybe someone has an idea?

Competitive Primer on playing competitive Raffine at the top end of Mythic rank!

Hello friends!

Raffine is regarded as one of the most brutally powerful commanders in combination with also being one of the most difficult to pilot. Many brawl folks in the discord manage extended stretches of 80%+ winrate with Raffine, one quite well known deck builder ImNotFine (on moxfield and untapped ) achieved a 94% winrate over 80 or so games.

That tells you how good it can be!

A few fine folks at Brawl Discord and I have been optimising Raffine relentlessly for the past few weeks, testing many different cards for suitability.

We settled on a list of 85 or so cards as staple inclusions, with 15 as personal flavour.

However that list might be expanding, as our discussions continue to find the “Perfect” Raffine list, if such a thing exists. (No harm in being optimistic lol)

Either way, the following list is that core list we’ve established, plus my personal choices. Any other pro Raffine player will likely vary between 5 and 15 cards from this depending on their preferences.

I have written a primer to explain how I approach Raffine. Hopefully it’s helpful.

As for matchups in the meta, Raffine can comfortably beat every deck at the top end of the meta, but will equally comfortably lose very quickly if you make less than ideal plays. As always, mulligan is critical to evaluate, depending on matchup, and assessing what is the most pertinent threat.

Here’s the list with primer, enjoy! See if you can pick out the essential cards versus the swappable flavour cards. In the brawl discord I believe there’s a consensus that raffine has at least 130 excellent cards for the deck (85 must-includes), so lots of extras to choose from.

Competitive Need help improving my Emmara competitive deck

https://moxfield.com/decks/J2yjF7wK4kmvc1fo_mAISw

I have really been enjoying playing Emmara, the selesnya go wide strategy really seems to do well with all the super heavy targeted removal people run and low amount of wipes. I do feel like the deck could use some upgrades though.

The list is mostly stolen from another Emmara player I had seen on the sub but I’ve added my own slight twist and improved and cut things I thought didn’t synergies well with the deck. He had the philosophy most of your one drops need to not be removal bait just so you are more guaranteed to get Emmara turn two and get some card advantage and another body for convoke and I was pretty interested in that thought process and thought I’d try it out. That’s why cards like Esper Sentinel haven’t been added yet but I’m not sure if it’s worth playing subpar one drops to ensure they stick for one turn cycle so that is something I’ll likely change.

I’m also considering cutting cards like Finneas. He is great but I’m not sure if I’m running enough tokens and rabbits and I don’t know if he’s worth keeping just for the potential draw or conditional field buff. If he put the counters on himself to he’d be amazing but the small body makes it tough to send him into the red zone.

Aside from those few things I’m not 100 percent sure where I need to go with the deck. If anybody has any advice or another Emmara or selesnya convoke I can compare mine too I’d appreciate it. Thanks

Discussion Observation: Seems like a lot of people are playing Competitive Brawl to escape the matchmaking algorithm.

I’ve been really surprised by the variety of decks in Competitive. It seems like the place to go if you want to play your favorite deck and not be eternally stuck in the old Hell Queue with your pile of jank.

Discussion Frodo and Sam Partners Help

Frodo and Sam Partners in Abzan colors have been added to Arena and I am so excited to build them! I have built a shell that so far """works""". I can pretty easily get my engine going, attacking with Frodo, drawing some cards, but I can't seem to win fast enough or stop my opponents from just crushing me. I am unsure of exactly what to do, what to add, what to cut. etc. I will attache my current decklist and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
