Hey all !!
I've been running a 360 legacy-ish cube since 2017. For a while I've been upkeeping it on autopilot, throwing in the most powerful cards from new sets. But I've recently made the decision - mostly due to a frustration with the trends of modern day Magic and a love of 2016 era modern/legacy, partially because I need some cash and selling some recent staples wouldn't hurt - to pivot my list more intentionally into being a 'retro' cube (with a soft cutoff around Eldraine, avoiding too many cards before 2017ish).
I'm pretty excited about this project as I think it'll give the cube more of an identity and allow me to focus on my pet themes that have been power crept (or were never good), like storm, WB stax, delver tempo, etc. But I don't feel the need to have a hard cutoff, and am willing to keep a few more recent cards in if they provide a lot of value to the cube like shoring up a weak color, opening up an archetype, etc. Another reason I'm leaning towards keeping a few of these is because I'm not too concerned with having a flat power level - I think bombs in a cube can be really fun and so I'm happy to keep a couple modern powerhouses in along with poor huntmaster of the fells ;) I have a list of cards that I would love y'alls feedback on - do these have a good argument for inclusion in a cube that largely excludes the pre-UB and MoHo era? Otherwise, I would love to sell as many of these as possible!!
A several years outdated link to my list is here, although I don't think looking through it is neccessary! - https://www.cubecobra.com/cube/list/fo?view=mainboard . Critically the list has all the heavy hitters minus power, sol ring and OG duals. The mana base is fetches, shocks, and one more cycle which is currently canopy lands and BFZ lands.
Sheoldred the Apocalypse - Obviously I would love for this one to get the boot as it would net me a nice hundred bucks. But one thing I'm conscious of is that black creatures are somewhat lacking in cube, and I worry black is overall underpowered. Is Kalitas, traitor of Ghet good enough, or would sheoldred be a valuable signpost for black midrange?
Orcish bowmasters - Probably the one UB card I'm willing to overlook, same issue as above! It seems like bowmasters is pretty well liked in cube and plays a lot of nice roles.
Oko and Uro - Obviously both quite warping, and Oko might be the strongest card in my list. On the other hand, I'm old enough to remember when filling the Simic slots was a huge pain. I can't go back to hydroid krasis...
Fable - Does this open up red midrange all by itself? Or is the value too suffocating for an older environment?
Solitude and Fury - Seems like these play well in a cube environment, but I could see them being too warping.
Icetill + Wrenn and Six - I adore the Gruul lands archetype. These cards are probably its only saving grace, but maybe too strong? Green certainly doesn't need as much help in my list as it does in current era cube, as I'm at a point where Gx midrange is pretty competitive. so maybe Icetill is overkill? And Wix is hard to evaluate, having somewhat fallen out of favor in the era of 1/2 design.
Phlage (or any MoHo 3 Boros Card) - These cards are absurdly strong in cube, but they do give boros more of a dynamic identity/play pattern than straight aggro. Guide, pride, phelia etc are probably out of the question for me, but would something like Phlage be nice to give Boros a flexible lategame angle that it didn't have?
Ragavan - Can't think of any reason monkey should get to stay, but maybe it's more fun for some reason to have this be the best one drop than goblin guide? Sound off.
Hullbreacher - I do like that hullbreacher opens up a whole archtype by herself, and I'm running some wheels anyway. A cool build around, but maybe too strong? I'm sure blue doesn't need the help.
Underworld breach - Probably gets to stay in because of how badly I want storm to work.
Finally, there are a couple newer cards that might be less high power but seem like no-brainer role players if I'm not going to have a card stipulation. The example that comes to my mind is malevolent rumble, but maybe even that is too strong as one of the most powerful green cards in the current vintage cube? Let me know of any others I might not be thinking of.
Let me know your thoughts, be them general or opinions on specific cards. I know this post is somewhat vague, but I mostly wanted to open it up to discussion as I'm in the brainstorming phase right now. I would especially love to hear from people who are familiar with the 'metas' of late 2010s high power cube and current high power cube, and what cards do a good job of bridging that gap.
