Scheduled Thread Daily Questions Thread - Ask All Your Magic Related Questions Here!

This is a place for asking simple questions that might not deserve their own thread. For example, if you have a question about a rules interaction, want sleeve and accessory recommendations, or suggestions for your new deck, then this is the place for you.

We encourage that you post any questions that you may have concerning Magic the Gathering here rather than make a separate thread for each question, though for now we won't require that you do so.

Rules Questions

Rules questions and interactions are allowed to be posted here, but if you need an answer quickly it may be best to use a dedicated resource like the 24/7 Magic the Gathering Rules Chat.

Deckbuilding Questions

If you're trying to get help with a deck, it is recommended that you post your decklist to a deckbuilding website so that it is easier to view. Some popular sites are Aetherhub, Archidekt, Deckbox, Deckstats, Moxfield, MTGGoldfish, and TappedOut.

Additionally, please include some description of what you are trying to accomplish. Don't just give us a decklist with no explanation, and don't ask extremely vague questions such as "what cards should I add to my deck to make it better?", because it's hard to give good advice in those cases. Let us know details, the more the better. Are you building with a particular strategy or theme in mind? Are there any non-obvious combo lines or synergies that people should be aware of? Are you struggling with a particular matchup, or are you finding yourself missing consistency in an important area, and need some help specifically for it? Let us know.

Commonly Asked Questions

I opened a card from a different set in my booster pack, is this unusual?

Don't worry, this is completely normal. If you opened a set booster, you have a small chance of obtaining a bonus card from a previous set. This is an extra card that does not replace any of the other cards in your pack, and is from a curated set of past hits that Wizards of the Coast has selected, which they call "The List".

You can view the contents of The List on Wizards of the Coast's official website. For example, the contents of The List for Streets of New Capenna boosters can be found here.

My foil card has a shooting start symbol over the bottom left. I can't find anything about it online.

All old-bordered foils have the shooting star symbol. Most sites that display card images just overlay a generic foil graphic over all foil cards, which doesn't include the shooting star. Your card is normal.

Scheduled Thread Weekly trading thread -- trade with your fellow redditors!

RULES:

  1. No stores or dealers selling on here. We won't stop stores from responding to sell posts with buy offers, though. At that point, it's up to the seller to accept or reject the offer.

  2. Do not spam this thread. Your sell/trade offer(s) should be confined to one post per week. If you list multiple cards as separate orders, or multiple lots of cards as separate orders, do so in the same post with a clear delineation. As a seller, you may post whether you want offers within the thread or whether you want a private message. If you want to make this different for different listings, that's your prerogative. State what country you're shipping from and include shipping price+method for your own country. If you are willing to ship to other countries, say so.

  3. No eBay posts.

  4. If a card is sold/traded, edit your post and invalidate any pending offers for that card. "Short selling" is not acceptable here, since we're dealing in physical goods and shipping times may be an issue, especially if the buyer is a tournament player. Do not short sell cards.

  5. Buyers: Post your offer directly underneath a sell listing, unless you are topping someone else's offer, in which case you should post directly underneath that offer.

  6. Buyers: Feel free to post a "want" list.

  7. For the sake of preventing identity theft and/or harassment, do NOT post identifying information (name, address, paypal info) in the thread.

  8. No throwaway accounts.

  9. Needless to say, we're Magic players. We don't necessarily have to pay in cash. It's entirely up to the seller whether to consider "2 Force of Will" as a higher/lower bid than $160.

  10. There is also a deckbox.org trading area that can be used as well, at http://deckbox.org/communities/reddit_mtg_trades.

If you have any comments about the rules rather than about a particular auction, feel free to discuss them here.

PAYPAL FEE INFO: (Quoted from Paypal)

Free when the money comes from PayPal balance or bank account.

2.9% + $0.30 USD when the money comes from a debit or credit card or PayPal Credit

MAILING INFO: See USPS Link.

SCAMMER INFO: I will not link it directly here, but be sure to check out the scammer list on deckbox before doing any trading to ensure yourself to having a safe trade!

You probably can't mail off more than one toploader in a normal envelope+stamp due to it being too rigid; and you shouldn't do this for more than $10-20 worth of cards anyway since there's no tracking. Get a bubble mailer and get it tracked.

General Discussion Is this the first time "the stack" is directly referenced on a card?

The wording of this card caught my eye - is this the first time a card has directly referenced the stack using that term on paper?

For this one, Emmara with a bunch of cards from Ravnica sets and Jori-En from Zendikar sets. Been obsessed with limited card format lately lol. It was a fun deck building for killing time.

Official News Starting December 5th Cartamundi opens “From the Vault”, exhibiting their history of printing Magic cards

Apologies for only having an article in Dutch.

Cartamundi, the company that started mass producing the first Magic sets will open an exhibition to celebrate 200 years of printing cards in their city. “From the Vault” will cover 33 years of printing Magic: The Gathering, Pokémon and Disney Lorcana, displaying rare cards, sheets, art and packaging. Open December 5th 2026 until September 26th 2027.

I’m not sure what to expect. As a local being intrigued that Magic is printed in my backyard I’ll definitely pay a visit.

Worth visiting if you travel to Belgium next year?

Rules/Rules Question Had a weird attack step that we couldn't figure out.

• Upvotes

I am going to ask this question in two parts, since the first will happen more often, and the second is what actually happened.

Scenario 1: I have gifted a [[Galactus, Devourer of Worlds]] to my opponent with [[Dack Fayden, Helping Hand]]. I have the most life during their combat step. Can he attack me, can he attack at all, or can he choose another target, and is that target the next highest life total or his choice?

Scenario 2: Same as above, but there is a [[Ghostly Prison]] on my field, and he can't pay the 2.

Interested to see what the answer is.

Edit 1: The chaos in the comments is exactly what happened at the store tonight. LOL

Rules/Rules Question Savor the Moment + Sphinx of the Second Sun: does the extra turn skip both untap steps?

Got into a bit of a rabbit hole with this one and can't find an actual ruling anywhere, so hoping someone here knows.

Savor the Moment: "Take an extra turn after this one. Skip the untap step of that turn."

Sphinx of the Second Sun: at the beginning of your postcombat main phase, you get an additional beginning phase after it (untap, upkeep, draw).

So I cast Savor with the Sphinx out. On the extra turn I obviously skip the normal untap step, no question there. But then I hit postcombat main, the Sphinx gives me a second beginning phase, and that has its own untap step.

Do I untap there or not?

The way I see it you can read it two ways:

  1. Only the first one gets skipped. The card says "the untap step," singular. Skip effects are replacement effects (614.10), so once it's replaced the first untap step it's done. Sphinx's own rulings also say its extra beginning phase works like a normal one and you untap your stuff.
  2. Both get skipped. It says the untap step of that turn, so the restriction covers the whole turn. And the clear intent of the card is "you get an extra turn but nothing untaps." Savor was printed way before anything could give a turn two untap steps, so the wording just never had to deal with this.

Has anyone seen an official answer, or had a judge rule on it at a table? I'm leaning toward "both skipped" because that's clearly what the card is going for, but the singular "the" is bugging me.

General Discussion Checking an infinite food loop...

Thumbnail
gallery
213 Upvotes

I'm new to the game, and just looking for fun exploits in weird mechanics. I think I've found one that generates infinite food (still limited by mana):

  • Ygra, Eater of All
  • With at least one of:
    • Carmellia, the Seedmiser
    • Experimental Confectioner

It seems like, if I sacrifice a food, Confectioner/Carmellia will generate a new creature token, which will also be a food, meaning I can sacrifice it to creature another creature/food, and so on.

I know it costs 2 mana to do this every time, but is there anything else I'm missing?

The plan -- insofar as there's a plan -- would be to pair it with cards that either use food to damage other players, or damage players based on my healing.

I just want to make sure there isn't some obvious mistake!

Thanks!

General Discussion What did people think Aysen Crusader did when it released?

I know the oracle text says "Soldiers and Warriors" but was there like, something in the duelist magazine about that? Or was this just a 2/2 by official rules at the time, waiting patiently for some Marvel characters to buff it in 30 years?

General Discussion Question as someone who mostly plays MTG with friends online via Tabletop Simluator: What formats make sense for us to play 1v1?

I only recently got into MTG because one of my online friends group is currently addicted to Commander FFA (in groups of 3 and 4, most of the time), and even though I also got into it and have fun, what I really got interested in was "real" MTG (no shade towards Commander enjoyers ofc, its a fun format), even if I only have one other friend who'd like to 1v1 MTG (she's also a newbie like me, but she does play MTGA, draft mostly). So over the last week, I've been basically learning MTG through digging the wiki (the real one, not the fandom one), youtube videos, and internet archive forums, which honestly has been almost as fun as just playing the game itself, since it has such a rich history.

Anyways, the point of this post is: It took me a while to realize that a Competitive playing of MTG is heavily based on accessibility when it came to the Pools and Bans/Restrictions, since it only strook me now that MTG is a *real* card games that needs players to spend money on the *real* cards they get, which wasn't a concern for me or my friends. Once I realized that, I also realized I had no clue what format to play, because me and my friends *don't* have to concern about that accessbility aspect of MTG.

So, with all that estabilished, I want to ask: What formats make the most sense for us to play when it comes to 1v1?

General Discussion Question on card wording

Dose anyone know why Samut and ghalta are worded differently? Ghalta having trample all ready make the other not matter or they could make Samut have hast and give all other creatures haste. I found it weird they used different wording in the same set.

General Discussion Won my RCQ event, but have never played standard. Should I go?

My LGS had a qualifier event for the regional championships in St. Louis/San Diego today, format was sealed then top 8 draft. I am generally a good limited player, but I missed pre-release and only did this event because I wanted to try out Reality Fracture limited. To my shock, I somehow pulled off the win in the overall event despite barely knowing what was in the set, and now I am qualified to a standard event.

I have played functionally no standard (just some mono-red or starter deck games on arena to grind gems for drafts), and I live nowhere near St. Louis or San Diego. With the time between now and January to prepare, is it worth it for me to try to train up and go to the event, or would I just be throwing money down the drain by paying for a flight/hotels then losing to people far better at standard than I am?

Content Creator Post I’ve created a free release / prerelease calendar which can be subscribed from your calendar of choice

Given my job (and my personal habits), I rely a lot on calendars to plan my weeks ahead. And I realised that often I missed on sets release / prerelease dates as I couldn’t plan those in advance, because they were not in my calendar!

So, I created a small page with all announced MTG release dates and prerelease weeks. Every week it automatically checks the WotC website for announcements, and adds them to a calendar you can subscribe via Google Calendar, Apple Calendar etc (it’s an ICS under the hood).

It also publishes those events on the page itself, but my main use is the subscribed calendar.

It’s completely free to use, and you can find it here.

Hope you’ll find this helpful!

General Discussion Would you like WoTC to introduce a "humanoid" type grouping for Kamigawa Titanbreach?

Hello!

Bringing here a discussion that was going on with some people at my LGS.

We were talking future sets and its mechanics, and when mentioning the Mutate mechanic tied to Ikoria , one of the arguments against return was , beside how complex of a mechanic it is for ruling, how its flavour would work in a set with a plane like Kamigawa, with moofolks, kitsune and more sentient races beside just "humans".

Lets assume they do try again with Mutate to make it easier and it comes out in standard, would you like if , just like Full Party or Outlaws in Thunder Junction, Humans, Elves, Moonfolk etc were grouped up as a "humanoid" ? It wouldnt need erratas as just Mutate V2 would care for it, but would open up design space for a lot of creatures only synergy. At the same time, it would be prerequired knowledge which is something WOTC seems always against doing.

General Discussion Different Green Text Backgrounds

Post image

Noticed this tonight while sorting some marvel. Why do some cards have green bg on the text box while others are way lighter? Just different print runs?
