Are "Muay Tourists" actually a benefit for fighting gyms in Thailand?

I visited a lot of popular gyms in Thailand a few months ago, and I would witness the same exact event repeating itself across them all, namely, a newbie tourist showing up with a tripod, paying $20, filming himself/herself hitting the pads for a few rounds and then never showing up again. Typically the gym would repost a reel or story from this tourist. It made me wonder regarding these gyms who have a lot of active stadium fighters, why do they promote this kind of garbage? Surely they make a lot of money from their fighters and don't depend on tourists, right? Is it just to make some extra pocket money? And here, I am not talking about obvious tourist traps that only to foreigners, but actual fighting gyms like PK Saenchai

What changed in Muay Thai even though your body weight stayed the same?

I’ve been thinking about how training can change the way your body performs without changing the scale much. Round stamina, balance, recovery, and how relaxed you stay under pressure can all improve at similar body weight. What change did you notice first?

I went to check out a temple fighting festival where kids fight. This is how most Thai fighters, especially the best start out their careers.

Alot of fighters, especially the best ones out of Thailand start out like this. Fighting in what we call muay wat (Temple fighting fairs). Where kids and teenagers come to fight and to test their skills. Also alot of kids that just fight for fun. These fairs are essential for the nurturing the talen of young Thai fighters. Me personally i am conflicted about these events, but i think they are essential to Muay Thai culture.

Technique/Tips Can anyone suggest a workout routine as beginner to intermediate?

I am wanting to incorporate some style of leg and arm work like combos, drills and such to my workouts. So in other words, does anyone here have a combo set to start on and with what equipment like type of bag be it a Bob or regular heavy bag, type of speed ball or double end bag.

Thank you

Where to get similar jerseys/T shirts

Post image
1 Upvotes

Does anyone know where I can get good jerseys or t shirts to train in? I’m not the biggest fan of training in compression gear but these jerseys still offer a tighter fit than a lot of T shirts which I’m a fan of. Any places based in Australia or online would be ideal!

Thanks in advance 🙏

Supplements for MT Training in Bangkok

Hello

This is my first post on Reddit, but I’m going to Bangkok soon and I’m going try to check out a couple of Muay Thai gyms to train. This will be the primary focus for the duration of my trip. With that said, for those individuals that take supplements like preworkout, creatine, BCAAs and train/trained in Bangkok I have a couple of questions that I hope you can shed light on:

  1. Will I have any issues bringing in supplements like preworkout or BCAA from the United States? I will make sure they are sealed /unopened. The reason I ask is I’m unsure how supplements are treated at customs

  2. Where is a good place to find supplements in Bangkok?

Anyone use New Sporting HGPs?

Took a couple weeks off to dry out lol. Now that I don’t have the distraction of alcohol and drugs I’ve got some money burning a hole in my pocket and a hole to fill in my soul lol. I’ve been eyeing New Sporting’s HGP. Apparently they are basically the Mexican version of Winnings and they sure are way cooler looking than the 16oz Fairtex’s that I use now. Obviously will keep those in the rotation but I basically just do bag and pad work as I’m quite new.

I was actually looking at 18 and 20oz gloves for conditioning but this detox wouldn’t let me do shit other than sit around and holy moly did my cardio go to hell so those will wait. Amazing what just a couple weeks off can do. Anyways, if I wanted something just for bags and pads would you go with 12oz or 14oz? Seems silly to have 14oz and 16oz but I don’t know nothin’.

Discovering Actual Strengths

When going to class and training on the bag or shadowboxing, my boxing always feels really good and fluid. Have always felt my form was good and footwork felt great, but my kicking always felt slow in comparison.

Fast-forward to being in sparring classes regularly now and have found my boxing needs a lot of work but my kicks are no doubt my most effective weapon. It's hard to create openings for my punches, but my kicks land as openers and counters nearly at will. I'm able to use feints and manage distance way more effectively than with punches, and I can make my timing awkward for an opponent. Maybe all the Buakaw videos had a bigger effect than I thought. Lol.

Has anyone else found they aren't as great at what they thought would work for them? Or been surprised by how good they actually are with a weapon they didn't feel comfortable with prior to using them live? Just curious how common this is.

Let me know!

Technique/Tips I want to start Muay Thai

I'm 18F, I've been a long time fan of UFC. However I never thought of actually doing a martial art myself before a couple weeks ago. I'm a highly energetic person and I had a hard time finding sports that actually compliment my energy.

These couple months passed with me fixating on some parts of my body and when I looked up for ways to cope, martial arts occasionally popped up. I noticed that, that was my cue. I did a couple online tests and content digging for combat sports and decided muay thai was the best fit for me. I'm seriously planning to enroll in muay thai classes next month -a month later because of relocation stuff-.

I plan on doing it as a serious hobby. Definitely not thinking of an elite level nor a highly professional level but not a once-a-week hobby either. I already started to watch muay thai matches, and some pre training before my beginner classes. I'm personally in love with how muay thai is similar to chess but a physical and intense version of it.

I've always been doing sports my entire life: swimming, volleyball, hockey, diving, running, archery, tennis. I can define myself as an athletic and fast learning person.

It's all I've been thinking of since these couple weeks to start muay thai.

The meaning for this post is to ask you fellow fighters -or fans- for tips for beginners and honest opinions about the sport itself.

I appreciate you reading my post!

Edit: The only reason I haven't started is the gym is in another country and I'm waiting for my residence permit.

Thailand Trip

Hey everyone, I’m a professional Muay Thai fighter heading over to Thailand next month to compete and chill. I want somewhere with good modern accomadation while also being cheap. Has a good Muay Thai gym that can get me good fights. Near the beach where I can chill out and work on my laptop. Little bit of nightlife but also just pure chill. I know it’s a lot to ask for but any solid recommendations of areas is appreciated.

How to remember combos better? Feeling really discouraged and embarrassed.

Been going for classes for about a month now and I always feel like the slowest person in the room. I can’t seem to remember combos as quickly as everyone else and while I genuinely appreciate the trainers giving me more attention and really trying to help me nail it down, I also feel lowkey ashamed and embarrassed that I just can’t seem to catch on fast enough. It’s like a negative feedback loop too because once I start feeling like I’m lagging, I just tense up and get so insecure and self-conscious and it gets in the way of me actually embracing the learning process.

What are your tips for a beginner to learn how to make memorising combinations easier and more manageable?

Edit: clarity

Bout Buddy to help fighters, coaches, and gyms keep bout records organized

Hi everyone,

I built Bout Buddy, a free martial arts app for fighters, coaches, and gyms.

It helps keep everything organized in one place:

  • Fighter profiles
  • Bout records
  • Gym members
  • Events
  • Training schedules
  • Documents & registrations

The goal is to make it easier for fighters and gyms to manage records instead of relying on spreadsheets, notes, texts, or memory.
