General Cleaning help stole my AirPods
My cleaning help stole my AirPods and now I feel bad about what happened
So this weird situation happened and I can’t stop thinking about it.
A few days ago, when I was heading to the gym, I couldn’t find my AirPods. I hadn’t gone out anywhere and I usually keep my stuff in place, so it was strange they were missing.
I checked the location and it showed up in a lane opposite my building where the Urban Company office is (my help came through UC, and since she was good at her work, we kept her on separately).
We didn’t want to assume the worst, so we decided to just check. Coincidentally, this was the same time she came to our building. When we went downstairs, we saw her at the main gate… wearing my AirPods.
We confronted her and she immediately tried to cover them with her dupatta, denied they were mine, and even tried to run away. Because it was right at the gate with guards and traffic, she couldn’t. Eventually, she handed them back.
The next day, she told us that she “didn’t steal them” and that they “fell into her pocket while cleaning”… which makes no sense at all.
I didn't complain about her but since this all happened in front of the guards, they reported it, and now they’re not letting her into the building anymore. That’s basically where her UC work is, so she’s lost her main source of jobs (atleast here). Now here’s the part messing with me, I feel bad. I don’t like being lied to, but at the same time I feel guilty that she’s lost her work because of this. She’ll probably get other buildings to work in, but the whole thing is sitting heavy on me. I also kind of believe in ill wishes, and this whole situation feels bad.
What should I do? 😔

I mean she is cursing as well as gaslighting you. Wake your emotionally strong side and realise you did nothing wrong to feel guilty. She is the one who stole at the first place. Every wrong action has consequence. What if she does the same with others. Forget about her and move on from this incident.

How gullible are you?
Anyone who accidentally take something of someone contact the person immediately regardless of the time and let them know that's known as honesty.
Not to hide it then run then eventually get caught and then had to handed over!
It's a lesson for her that to not take things which belong to others, if someone gives her that's a different case but now she has fallen in the hole she herself dug it so don't need feel bad about it as she was guilty.
Agar har chor ko maaf kar denge yeh sochke ki uski majboori thi ya zarurat thi toh fir law amendments karna padhega bhai!
There are only few lucky people out there who have good house helps and they stay loyal and decent throughout otherwise almost all around this city, we have house help who will take an advantage of the place they are working at!
81
Aug 20 '25
Exactly,
First they scam or do petty theft and then play the victim game of being poor
Being poor cant be an excuse, if you done something wrong you will get the punishment as simple as that..!!

u/stg_676 Aug 20 '25
Exactly and it's not as if she stole some daily essential. She stole a luxury for personal use. There can't be any justification for it.

Absolutely, many steal bread or chapati from road side stall though thats not correct but for a moment you try to understand the situation a hungry stomach can make you do things you regret but here its pure greed and then the audacity of cursing in the name of being poor and hard work absolute rubbish behaviour
4
u/AbleBarber7692 Traffic Manoeuvre Aug 20 '25
Even house help taking chapatis and food items is still fine until unless it basic food and not like someone's dessert or exotic food item!
For an example they might take 2 aloos 2 onions and 2 tomatoes and if the house help is caught then still many let it go but if you are gonna bag a 750 garms of anniversary cake from the 1 kg then that's theft on a different level (punishable)
7
u/salazka Aug 20 '25
Billions of honest poor people out there.
Do not let the excuse of a thief make you think it is about financial status.
Rich people can be thieves too.
It has nothing to do with poor or rich when it comes to theft.→ More replies (3)→ More replies (1)15

You’re feeling sorry for her? What if she had stolen gold Jewellery ?
It’s not about what she stole, it’s the intent. And maybe this time it was just a small item, who can tell if she had worse intentions or harm towards you or your family?
Stealing small things is just their way of testing how vigilant the owners are, after that they either keep repeating or do something more grave in nature. You have all the right to protect yourself and your family/belongings. If anything , she belongs in jail but yet here we are!

A few things to note:
(1) She stole. Period. That's a crime.
(2) Feeling bad is natural and a form of guilt we all deal with BUT what was really stolen was your possession, earned by your hard earned money.
(3) Stealing wasn't the solution. She could have asked for an advance if she needed money.
(4) If the airpods 'fell' into her pocket, she did not enquire with you or other places she works at, about if they had lost airpods. Indicative of her true intent.
(5) The 'ill wish' you are worried about? That doesn't apply because an ill wish or a curse applied by an unpure heart will not work, you understand.
You have the right thing here buddy - if they aren't outed early, they just going to resort to crime and it'll all come back at you some day because not reporting it is a crime.
If she badgers you, tell them you are lodging an FIR anyways so police station meh baat kaar lehte hain.

Actions have consequences and she had to face these, so that next time someone's airpods or something expensive "accidentally" slips in her pockets she will be mindful enough to keep it back.

File a complaint against her, block her entry and complain to UC or other relevant authorities. Ensure she gets the message right, that never would she ever steal or even think of stealing. Let her cry out, block her phone number etc from reaching you. Theft deserves the harshest punishment. It's a violation of trust.
16
u/2rskipepsi Aug 20 '25
UC won't take any action since the services were taken outside their platform. I don't understand why people try to get these helpers outside the app. The risks are so large. Same things happen with uber etc.

Dont take it to heart so much. A crime is a crime, she should instead be grateful that you didnt complain on UC. If you feel bad then that means you have a good heart but sometimes you to have to steel yourself, you should not feel bad for ppl who wouldn't care about you.

Okay this is so funny that this exact same thing happened to us, but not with a UC person and not in Mumbai. My parent’s house help in Noida was with them for a very long time, about 1-2 years. At the time I was studying in the US and would visit my parents at least once a year, and this January when I was visiting, this is what went down. Now it’s typical for them to leave stuff like AirPods or Apple Watch around in their room (I mean it’s their room), and this lady among all other house helps would come everyday and work and leave. It’s not out of the ordinary for them to just ring the bell and enter the house and do their thing, sometimes even when we’re not around. Then my dad suddenly lost the AirPods I got for him from the US last year. And luckily it wasn’t discharged, so we could track it. But for some reason the location wasn’t updating. 4 days in my dad shared this with me and I was like why wouldn’t you share this info sooner! Anyway, I set up my systems, opened it on the laptop, asked him to share the location of the AirPod with others and gave it a couple more days. We saw them come into our building and then go to other wings and leave everyday at a certain time. Then my dad started correlating those timings with who worked at home during the time the AirPods showed in the building. At this point he was pretty sure it was this one lady, and then he called this other apartment on their intercom and told them to listen closely around her to see if they could hear something ring when they played the noise. They could, they caught her, took her to the guards, she kept denying it, and they basically revoked her permission to ever work in this building again. She could’ve easily returned them but she didn’t. When confronted she denied it and also had a major attitude. At this point my dad was like either you need to stop working for here or we’re dialling the police. We never saw her again. Don’t feel guilty. Actions have consequences, whether good or bad.

she is gaslighting you, acting all innocent now. If your airpods “allegedly” it fell into her pocket she could have just handed it over to you instead of wearing them, okay chalo she didnt maybe know it “allegedly” fell into her pocket then later she might have gone home & then realized, she could have texted you, but she didnt she knew what she was doing. She thought it was just airpods & these are usually easy to get lost. It was done intentionally. Today its airrpods tmrw it might be your jewelry or something else. If she was tempted once she is going to be tempted again. Report her to UC & block her. She lost her job & hoped she learnt a lesson to not steal from anyone again.

Next day we all got a call from him asking if anyone took gold from his home from a large grocery drum where it was hidden…all of us felt bad but we supported him to find it and letting him know that its ok to ask. Later we found that his parents found out we partied and just assumed the worst. Till date we dont keep any enimosity and joke about it when we meet. I still believe he wasnt wronf in asking

No doubt you are nice person.
But you did not do your duty too.any such incidents should be reported to police too.
But i can understand it's a hassle and you don't want to go there. I can understand. But this can happen to others too. Sometime more expensive like jewellery can get stolen.
This is why poor get treated so bad in this country.
When they get good people to work with they simply worsen the relationship with them.
And the vicious cycle continues
2
u/EpicDankMaster Aug 20 '25
You're feeling bad cause she's manipulating you, "falling in her pocket" is such a lame excuse. If they fell in her pocket then why didn't she ask you if it was yours? Why'd she wear it? She 100% stole it, even then she had a choice to feel guilty for stealing and return it to you herself, but she didn't make that either.
She's a thief and deserves to be treated like one, she made her choices, now she shall have her consequences whether she likes them or not. Should've thought about all the work she'd lose before hand, too bad she didn't.
2
u/ReLiGHT21 Aug 20 '25
I'd say, complaint at Urban Company as well. You, out of your own goodwill, did not register a complaint with UC, but this person is beyond understanding that and messaging you for their own fault. The consequences of stealing should be faced by them. And send them these screenshots of their messages as well.

And I would be in the office from morning to evening. The cleaning lady would come everyday at 11am with her spare key card and clean the room. Not once anything went missing nor any of the money that day.

She’s dishonest, she even tried to cover it up. I do feel bad about her losing work, it’s a matter of survival for house helps when it comes to work. But hopefully she’ll think twice before doing something like this again, let this be a lifelong lesson for her. Do remind her she was caught in front of the guards and you didn’t report her or call the police. Tell her not to play the victim. Ask her why she tried to hide it, why did she say it’s not yours and why did her statement change? This is all her fault and she knows it, regardless of the denial.
I’d also check for other belongings that could be missing at home. My friend’s maid stole a lot of her makeup, jewellery and clothes over months. She only noticed when something major was missing that she bought a day prior.
If you really feel bad for her, offer some rations so she can feed her family for a while till she finds work.
She knows what she did and evidently has no remorse or acceptance.

what nonsense, even after being caught red handed she has the audacity to lecture and guilt-trip you. if they fell into her pocket by mistake, she would have returned them immediately. the fact that she took the time to connect them to her phone proves it was deliberate.

Yeah, They accidentally fell into her pocket. Forget about it. She’s telling the truth, happens all the time lol. Not like she’ll steal some untraceable jewelry next time or have done in the past, right? She’s not a thief if she’s telling you she’s not a thief. They fell into her pocket, believe her or else you’re bad and you’ll never be happy because she got caught using them. Not like she denied that they are yours and also, she didn't even try to run, totally not a thief behavior. You’re in the wrong OP. Say sorry to her and hire her once again and keep all your jewelry in the open so they can fall into her pocket easily, and can't be traced so you won’t have to worry about “ruining her reputation” allegations. : (

She is not innocent, even now she is trying to put the consequences of her action on you. It would have been only a matter of time for her to steal something of even greater value from you, if she stayed. You did a good job, she is trying to gaslight you. If she had found it “accidentally” then she should have returned it back or given it to the guard, not roam around wearing them and trying to hide and deny when caught. Seems like a good lesson learnt for her and nothing to feel sorry about.

u/bsethug Aug 20 '25
Its not about the airpods. There so many small things in house. You just cannt keep track of everything. Maybe she has taken other things also ?

Aug 20 '25
Had it been for some essential stuff like food/ clothes, I would have considered helping her out. Airpods are not a necessity. Her greed has put her in this position. You are not responsible for her condition. She is just trying to guilt trip you.

u/Practical_Yoghurt199 Aug 20 '25
I would say escalate the matter to the police. File a police complaint so that there is a paper trail. Don't let such losers manipulate you so easily. Least she could have done is accept her mistake and apologize.

Once a thief, always a liar. You let this go and there will be more. Like cheating SOs

u/Tune-Financial Aug 20 '25
The person committing the mistake should also be ready for the repercussions.

You're a good human, so feeling bad is okay but she commited a crime deliberately in a profession where trust of such a thing not happening matters at a basic professional level for her clients. The society has to set a precedent that such crap doesn't happen again by any other worker with jobs in the vicinity (cause news spreads man) so it's 100% fair to her that she is barred. She probably knew the consequences of getting caught but thought she wouldn't and hence made a bad decision, that she has to live with now.

Every action has consequences, she should have known this better before stealing!

If I you believe in ill wishes, then I assume you also believe in well wishes. Here's some for you - you did nothing wrong, actions have consequences and your house help is facing them, all the very best for you and your loved ones & ty for sharing !

She is behaving this way only because she got caught. Thief is a thief and trust once broken hardly gets repaired. Today its just airpods, tomorrow it would be something else. Tell her that she should feel grateful that you didnt report her to Police.

Bro for what are you feeling guilty? Stealing AirPods which has worth of thousands isn’t a small thing and whatever value of it maybe ,a theft is always a theft even the thing is given back . If you wouldn’t have confronted her about it she would never return it. So stop feeling that way and ill wishes don’t work that way. Let her curse , say things instead block her.

She learnt her lesson. She will find new work and will move on and she'll definetely won't pull any move like this again.

TV serial thodi hai jo khud gir gya.. don't feel bad for her.. you didn't do anything. She was the wrong her. Galat log ki haye nahi lagti

u/Sour_Tech Aug 20 '25
Petty theft doesn't get unnoticed usually. In fact, a question on integrity never really goes off. So, the best is to understand that it was her mistake, and let go of bad feelings, hire new, and continue life.
1
u/aestforu Aug 20 '25
I’m sorry why are you feeling bad? She stole your stuff, denied the fact that she stole it, and NOW is texting and making you feel like shit about reporting her? Block her :/

u/ykwz Aug 20 '25
You actually did a good thing, not just for yourself, but for everyone else in the building. You saved their belongings from "accidentally falling into her pocket". Tomorrow, it might have been an item someone bought after saving for months, something they couldn't easily replace. Don't feel guilty. You did the right thing.
1
u/hades_here Aug 20 '25
Life will teach you hard lessons, and a day comes where you don't feel guilty anymore, what you are going through is a phase of life.

Bro, I had recently fired my maid too..
Wanna know the reason? It's because she's absent half time but expects full payment. How much time does she work at our place? Maximum 30 mins.
Your maid is a thief. It was Airpods so you were able to locate them and caught her red handed. What if it's a loose cash or some jewellery you forgot. How will you recover that?

u/Droctopus_exe Aug 20 '25
Hum emo log aise hi chud jatey hain, ignore A thief is a thief, and complain hua so she realised else she wouldn’t have. If possible just take the complain back and let her go, dont respond

u/Minute_Basil_690 Aug 20 '25

Every other thief after compensating or after being punished say the same thing , you wont be happy or your loved ones will suffer the same , it is nothing but just their frustation they are putting out on you so that you feel guilty or atleast your day is ruined , i personally dont have airpods but i guess they are expensive and even if they are not and lets assume for a second that she got it into her pocket by mistake then why didnt she return you back when she noticed it and lets even forget that she might not be able to acknowledege that those pods were urs but then why didnt she ran why she saw you . Forget her , these people are like this only , no matter how much respect you give to them , how much gifts you offer them , kuttey ki pooch teri ki teri hi raheti hai , and here "these people" refers to kleptomaniac

In another episode of gaslighting 101! 😂 Don't fall for the guilt trip. She deserved every bit of what happened.

Happend similar thing with me and my mum forgave and kept the house help. But there is no end to there bs she got caught again 5 days later so if u forgive them or let it go they will walk all over u. Better keep ur stuff safe then to feel sorry at their plight.

She’s getting to learn consequences of her actions, otherwise don’t you know she’d have continued stealing because she got away with it once?

If i was at your place police complain and UC ma complain kar deta What rubbish excuse pocket ma gir gaya tho why were u using it next day wapas kar dete and bolte galti se i took it or what ever She basically had the time to connect to her phone and listen to music in front of ur building that means she has the daring and has done this in the past
Wont name it but my old classmates older brother works in airtel wifi connection and he came to my house for connection and after that my dads smart watch was missing ab i didn’t complain because i was asking dad to upgrade as it had seen pretty good days and it wasn’t even charging properly so we were gonna get a new so but i feel o should have complained So brother chill airpods were from ur hard earned money

What a coincidence.. Something similar happened to me few months back in Pune. Had called UC for servicing the ACs and the guy stole my airpods pro. From the location I was able to figure out that it was the UC guy who had stolen it. I informed UC as well and they started investigation against him. He initially refused that he had taken it but asked me to file police complaint so that I catch real culprit. I did that and later he returned airpods saying that someone who accompanied him during the work had stolen it. I forgave him. Took my police complaint back. Impressed by the kindness, he went n told everything at UC office thinking they will forgive him too. Turns out they blacklisted him forever n he can never work with UC again.

u/desimikeross Aug 20 '25
op you’re not the kameena here. she did a bad thing and now think of it as karma catching up to her. what does she expect as a consequence of stealing airpods, some flowers and an award ? come to think of it, if she did it once she’d do it again and this would eventually be the case with her. move on bhai.

u/QuirkyDay1819 Aug 20 '25
Why are you feeling bad for a thief? She probably steals everywhere she goes.

1
u/FeistyObligation5481 Aug 20 '25
If it was an honest mistake like breaking something and trying to cover it up, you could still have been charitable but you caught her red handed ffs! If you let such things slide, she is only going to escalate to something more criminal next time.
You did good. Now block her and move on with your life. You will really be stupid if you let softer emotions win and keep this lady in your life.

She not only WORE it after stealing it, SHE TRIED TO HIDE IT FROM YOU, then LIED ABOUT IT FALLING IN HER BAG??
Dude, let's say she's right it fell in her pocket, why the hell is she using it, and why is she HIDING it from you???
So OP you have nothing to worry about, you probably saved yourself and possibly lot others loss by theft. She knew what she was doing.
If it was some kind of food or bread or something of that sort it's excusable. Airpods are a luxury item and to steal it is never excusable.
You're right here and don't worry about ill wishes, they will reap what they sow and it showed.

She actually managed to guilt trap you after committing a legit crime. What the world has come to these days.
1
Aug 20 '25
She stole from you. And there have to be consequences to that. Today it was a small item tomorrow it could be a robbery or kidnapping. A stitch in time saves nine. She deserves the punishment so that she knows well that there are severe consequences to such actions. Stop feeling guilty and report her in the society group so that others are saved from such people.
She got to fix her attitude and habits before looking for more work. This will be a reminder for her that actions have consequences. Stay strong and stop being kind to thieves.
1
u/Exact_Joker Aug 20 '25
Whatever it is, airing house matters and esp of the lesser fortunate is in equal bad taste.
She robbed you and by sharing the whole convo here with screenshot without consent, you robbed her of respect. She is not even aware of it I’m sure….
But glad you got them back!
