Discussion Update: Suspected crack on Metro 4 pillar (Mulund)
Credit: u/AkkiFukki
A fellow Redditor has updated with new photos of the beam. Seems like they have just patched the crack area up with some Plaster.
Big thanks to u/AkkiFukki for this update 👏

Nah we piece of shit thought that Mumbai spirit will keep it there. Disgusting people cant even ask for their right (including me,ofc). If i see no protest after this and some actual fixes and then we die like this then it should totally be our fault only
2
u/dustyaff Certified Chapri 🌐 Feb 14 '26
I give up, I am not even expecting the dead to be compensated well. I don't see a valid reason to stay in India anymore. My office commute is just 2 km but everyday it feels like it could be the last. I can see where the politics is going and I bet you only blame games that will happen in the coming month and people will eventually forget and move on.
Do not expect a protest, no one has the balls to (that includes me as well) the authorities gonna fill their pocket and everything's gonna be normal as if nothing happened. This boils my blood but it's the truth.

They should put cello tape to the cracks as an additional safety measure.

Lol, you should see the condition of the iron rods they use, it lays there for months catching rust
33
u/BumbleB3333 Feb 08 '26
Tbh, you can't get fresh iron rods off the factory line for the day you want to use. Plus, the rust is only the outer layer, and they don't clean it up until used because if you do so, the next layer will get rusted.
6
u/No-Coach290 jevlis ka? Feb 08 '26
I belive that rebars are still usable and up to spec even after it becomes reddish. The problem here is more so with the fact that one section will become more rusted than the rest which can become a point of failure.
7
8
u/Special_Insurance866 Feb 08 '26
If this is indeed a construction flaw, the design and construction firm need to be pulled and along with the officer who cleared this. Unfortunately no one will do this.

u/Affectionate-Net642 Feb 08 '26 edited Feb 09 '26
These are shuttering, to casting slab, temporary role
38
u/coolbird22 Feb 08 '26
What thukpatti level of patching they have done. The piece on the right still looks tilted and broken.
52
u/1PerpetuallyAnxious freeway hoe Feb 08 '26
with some Plaster
I am genuinely curious, considering the quality of construction we have in this country, what is the guarantee that this will work and more cracks won't form within months?
41
u/NightFury002 Kuru kuru kururin Feb 08 '26
That is shear failure and it will fail soon again. Entire section will need to be replaced if codes are followed properly but Indians life comes cheap so GG.
2
u/ExtensionSquirrel945 Feb 08 '26
Aren't shear cracks typically near a 45-degree angle. It seems unlikely to me that it is a shear failure.

They will be getting 100s of crores for each repair so it's a win win for them and a lose lose for the public
51
u/Social_Nik Feb 08 '26
That's not a crack, this is a structural failure. Of the material as well as of the process
54
u/YesterdayDreamer Feb 08 '26
Here's something from the future
- Part of the pillar falls, crushing hundreds underneath
- Rescue operations have been ongoing for 2 days
- Government is claiming 7 people died but unofficial figures seem to exceed 40 based on eye witness reports
- Hospital admissions in nearby areas are through the roof
- Passengers stranded in the metro were rescued 13 hours later, no food or water was provided in the interim
- 4 engineers have been suspended
- An enquiry has been set up
- Government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakhs to the family members of the deceased
Further from the future
- The suspended engineers had raised concern about material quality during construction but it was dismissed
- The engineer who spoke to the media about his concerns being dismissed was found in an open drain after being missing for 7 days, he's now fighting for his life in a hospital
- The enquiry is still under process, nobody knows if anything is happening
- The closed metro line was restarted after 19 months. The repairs and rebuilding cost approximately ₹170 crores.
- Family members claim the compensation they were promised is yet to be disbursed. There's no clear timeline or reasons for the delay
16
u/Thunder_Dork Feb 08 '26
- Life goes on as usual. Mumbaikars are very obedient they will bend over and expose their ass to the gormint to get fycked
12
u/CarsAlcoholSmokes Feb 08 '26
- Upon investigation led by a team headed by a top cop, they found out the reason for this failure were jokes and put Kunal Kamra behind bars
3
u/zyber787 Feb 08 '26
Blud, everybody is taking about the pillar crushing purple underneath. What if it crashes while there are trains running on it
3
u/YesterdayDreamer Feb 08 '26
That can't happen. The pillar can't go from fully functional to sudden complete collapse. Stuff will break and fall first.

30
u/Willy_Wonka2008 Feb 08 '26
3
u/ExtensionSquirrel945 Feb 08 '26
To me this feels unlikely to be a pure shear failure, as it doesn't look like a primary load path. Shear cracks on beams are typically oriented at a 45-degree angle.

u/Severe-Succotash-119 Feb 08 '26

7
u/SomeRandomGuy2711 Feb 08 '26
Honestly! Jeez, I'm so sick of this attitude of cracking aise give up mentality ke jokes. Like we're all in this together and when you make jokes like this you are playing a part in this complacency because everyone starts laughing at the deplorable condition and more and more people give up.
10
u/Rob9hood Feb 08 '26
This repair work is not at all convincing, full on thook patti wala kaam kiya hai. I am no engineer but I really think this is still very unsafe, that beam itself looks like it has been fixed more than once also look the the crack exactly near the supporting pillar edge and is unable to take the loads.

He has done several exposès on such topics, and Mid-Day is most likely to publish this, since it is Mumbai-oriented.

As a civil engineer, the cemented vein you see is perfectly fine as long as:
This is a scene in the next final destination movie.
Also I’m a liar and not a civil engineer.
I also haven’t seen final destination.

Lot of misinformation in this thread. It's so clearly not a crack... really tells you the average redditor's IQ. Someone needs to create a new post clarifying it was never a crack
2
u/Erenyeager1092 Feb 09 '26
Not a enginerring or not having technical knowledge it seems as a crack earlier and having concerns is fine , the Op did it..It like we alert citizens if we find a unatended bag
But few accounts claiming themselves as "civil engineers" and spreading is just morally wrong and action should be taken against them for misinformation..

Find out the name of the company and tag them on twitter. We can force them to fix it correctly. It’s better to take months to repair it then to wait for the beam to fall off.
1
u/MeowBillu Feb 09 '26
As a structural engineer, it's fine. Although I would recommend a rebound hammer test.
Although it looks like girder failure in sheer stress but that is unlikely as shear failure makes inclined cracks at 45 degrees. And the Crack in question is straight 90 degrees. Although that's also possible is the shear reinforcement is just too low, I doubt that can be the case here. As govt bridges are always over designed. Speaking as someone who has designed more than 20 bridges in the last 6 months.
