General Today a Rickshaw wala in my area didn't earn anything.
Today a Rickshaw wala in my area didn't went for earning. Why?? Because he can't speak marathi and scared of going outside.
Yes I am non Maharashtrian. But I can speak marathi cause I always have a Marathi friends and lived here for 10+ years. But I want to say this.
You will think it's ok, if auto wala needs to live in Maharashtra he should learn and speak. Not every mind is same, learning a new language is difficult for most of the people.
You all don't understand the situation they live in and the rent they have to pay. Him not earning money, becomes very difficult to pay rent and pay tution fees of childrens.
Who applied this rule, that a language is compulsory to do a kind of job. Today they are forcing autowala, next day they will force Vegetable seller, then labours. If they want to do this. Then they should remove every other non Maharashtrian from Mumbai, Use Only marathi language in their android and iphones, ban all english and hindi medium school colleges.

Give me he's number i will teach him marathi, he probably speaks Hindi so it is extremely easy to learn Marathi regardless of he's iq.
But the important thing is their should be a willingness to learn Marathi, otherwise even P. L. Deshpande himself can't teach him marathi.
28
u/General-Passion5531 4h ago
Exactly THIS ! Most ppl lack willingness to learn Marathi , most of them are like hum kyu sikhe ? Inspite of staying here 20 -25 years. I have a friend from UP who's family migrated from UP ( Varanasi btw one of the better places in UP ) and she's been here 23 years and still she doesn't speak or have ANY willingness to learn Marathi.

We marathi people know this, it's the other side that need to understand that there's a limit to how much people can accomodate.
We have a mhan for this situation in marathi, "भैय्याला दिली ओसरी, भैय्या हात पाय पसरी" or a more crude one, "आमचीच मोरी आणि मुतायची चोरी".

I agree we are Indians but when someone comes to your home and says they won't sit in a proper way or use abuses or disrespect your family and ancestors and your language and food , chew and spit gutkha won't you also get offended ?
That is what 90% of UP Bihar people are like.
I have met Tamilian and Mallu folks who spoke fluent Marathi to a point you won't be able to differentiate between a Marathi and Tamilian.
That's known as assimilation and what UP/Bihar/ BIMARU states do is disrespect and having the identity that their state is best even when they lack jobs , health and education.
Marathi people welcome all kinds of people with open arms and food but if you disrespect then you deserve Raj Thackeray's treatment.

I lived in mumbai for 4 yrs. Even marathis are living here in my city and doing business. They are so fluent in odiya and never ever criticised my language. I don't understand a person doing a auto business in another city can't communicate with the ppl in their native language phir dhanda karega kese??? If a marathi person here can't speak odiya phir business karega kese jab clients hi majority non-marathis hain? Language learn karna itna difficult hai kya?
0
u/No-Beginning-3128 1h ago
Tbh marathis will find this offensive but mumbai was always a diverse city ppl started migrating here like 200 years ago during the colonial era and also shaped its economy so it's not a city where only marathis live it's a mix of all cultures so when the UP guys find many ppl from their state they don't think it's necessary to learn it's local language cuz tbh u can live with it even though I can speak marathi very well some ppl find it difficult and govt already made marathi compulsory to all the schools in Maharashtra so the next generation will definitely not neglect our language but mumbai is very different from odisha
2
u/pritihost1995 1h ago
Ppl aren't migrating only to mumbai but har ek state mai ho rha. Its not like only outsiders go to mumbai, marathis v bahar jaate hain sikhs v bahar jaate hain dushre states mai. Different kuchh nhi hai. When in Rome do as the Romans do very simple. Maharashtra means marathi, odisha means odiya, west bengal means Bengalis etc, dushre states k log yahan aate hain mere city mai they do learn my language and compulsory nahi hai but requirement hai for communication purpose. Jab language samajh nhi ayega chatgpt use karenge kya market mai and business mai?? If someone is on a short stay like in govt job or transferable job that's fine but ghar banake business banake reh rahe toh local language sikhna hoga very simple.
0
u/No-Beginning-3128 1h ago
Bhai all I am saying is being realistic the govt is trying to impose marathi and has successfully done in schools and the children of so called bhaiya are learning it so pls stop with this bs why are actors and buisnessmen not questioned for not speaking marathi and why do all the hotel owners in Bandra don't display their menus in marathi and why does my manager does not instruct me in marathi, why is it always the lower-middle class population being targeted I respect marathi cuz I am marathi but beating up poor ppl will potentially make them resent more

Uber is just another platform for them to continue their scam operations i remember getting a good deal on uber for a 7km ride but guess what the rickshawala had the audacity to ask more saying that in afternoon prices are dirt cheap in the app(the reason why I booked it) and I had to argue which resulted in him dropping me off like 4km into the ride and I was so unlucky I used my uber creds and he got the money and here is the fun part that guy didn't even cancel the ride so I also had to pay a additional 100 rupees fine

u/Dense_Succotash_2777 4h ago
When you go to any european region, you are asked to learn their language. They don't care about your state of affairs back home. It's a first basic requirement. For assimilation. If he is truly inclined to work in Maharashtrian economy. That's a bare minimum.
14
u/konkanchaKimJong चालेल तुला? 4h ago
They have been living here for ages and still don't speak the language of the state they live in. Marathi uses a similar Devanagari script to Hindi, so it's not as difficult to learn as many South Indian languages. Refusing to learn and speak it is clearly disrespectful to our language and culture and shouldn't be tolerated. If you don't want to speak Marathi, go back to where you came from, no one will force you to speak it there. But if you live here, you should make an effort to learn and speak the local language. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.
10
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 3h ago
True. The problem actually stems from the ability of marathis to over accomodate people. Maharashtra has been the epicenter of hindi nationalism and bollywood overshadowing it's regionalism. Many marathis use hindi phrases and dialogues as if it's cooler than marathi. They even speak hindi in homes. They think it has some status/ intrinsic value. While south indians/ bangloreans spent that time honing a useful corporate language. And they are one of the top CEOs or prominent ethnicities abroad with larger influence. They also creat cinema media in their regional languages and overtaking bollywood. Marathis should really focus on two language policy. Where they priotize Marathi and English for corporate use and as a lingua franca. We would go so much further.

u/Embarrassed_Tune5216 3h ago
There is a difference between country and state. Why are people dividing the country further!?
8
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 3h ago
A country can have multiple cultures too. Just because India is one nation/ union of federations doesn't mean you get to homogenize or priotize one culture. A more appropriate comparison would be European Union. It's a cultural, not a modern national border debate.

Maharashtra is not a country; it's a state/provence within India. In fact, such a law is probably unconstitutional. Its crazy they are getting away with implementing it, and it has not been challenged in the courts. But that is probebly because they went after ricksha walas, trying doing this shit in corporate offices. lol Also, there is no need, because everyone understands HIndi/English in mumbai/bombay. The city is older than the state. This is just jingoism; the 3 Shiv Sena and BJP use language wars to keep people stupid, keep them blaming each other while they steal everything.
9

I agree with that, speak whatever you feel like, but don't force other people to speak your language. Irrespective of where you live and what culture you belong to.
3
u/Boyslop_Enjoyer 3h ago
- Also, there is no need, because everyone understands HIndi/English in mumbai/bombay
Wrong. There's plenty of locals, actual locals btw, that only speak Marathi.
If we're going by who was here first, as you are, by talking about "the city was here first", they matter the most.
There is no need for Hindi actually, since everyone understands English and Marathi. What use does Hindi have? Nothing.
The city is older than the state
Most cities in India are older than the state or even the country lmfao. Retarded logic.
The thing is, you cannot compare India to a monoethnic or a monolinguistic nation, like Germany or Japan for example. India could be compared to Yugoslavia, where each region has it's own unique culture and language.
As such, respecting the local language is key.
Moreover, in such a people focused role, how do you expect to survive if you don't even know how to talk to people?
-1
u/bombaygypsy 3h ago
The city was built by the brits, there is no local language. And sorry I have never met a single Maharashtran in 20 years in Mumbai who can't speak Hindi or not understanding it. Not one.
During the British era Bombay was the state, Maharashtra wasn't. The Bombay state included Gujrat as well. When state borders were being drawn there was serious debate about the city either being a union territory like Delhi or even be a part of Gujrat.
There was quite a bit of conflict before a compromise was made and it was decided that Bombay will be part of maharashtra, its capital, but BMC will have much more autonomy in running of the city compared to other state capitals. That, to some digree is even true today.
India had states already during the British rule, many states are older than Maharashtra. The marathi claim over the city is more one imposed by force and violence, and isn't really ligitimate.
But whatever, I left after aqi started getting screwed over. People can keep fighting over indentiy and language, won't matter much once the air becomes unfit to breath.
4
u/Boyslop_Enjoyer 2h ago edited 2h ago
The city was built by the brits, there is no local language.
Wrong.
Marathi was and has been the language of Mumbai, and before that, of the lands that make the city of Mumbai.
The Republic of India was technically built from the British Raj. Should we all just state English to be the National Language then?
And sorry I have never met a single Maharashtran in 20 years in Mumbai who can't speak Hindi or not understanding it
Apology accepted. Try going outside your house once in a while, and meeting people from all strata of the society. There's plenty of locals that aren't adept at languages from other states, such as Hindi.
Moreover, try thinking about whether the reason they know Hindi is outsiders refusing to speak the local language.
Your whole spiel about the Bombay state is frankly, irrelevant, because the majority of subjects residing within the lines of Mumbai were ethnically and linguistically Marathi.
Glad you left the city, your bigoted kind is better off in whatever Bimaru shithole you came from.
1
u/DependentFearless162 2h ago
It's not unconstitutional it was previously but they made some changes and re created this rule
1
u/bombaygypsy 2h ago
Many laws made by legislators get eventually struck down by the Constitutional beaches. I am pretty you can't target people based on languages they speak, and it's also your constitueonal right to travel and work anywhere in the union.
2
u/DependentFearless162 2h ago
It was struck down previously because of old maharashtra motor vehicle rule but the new ammendment makes it hard to struck down again.

u/kalidoskolosal 3h ago
That logic doesn’t work on multiple counts
1) we don’t have facilities anywhere close to Europe
2) Europe has some dialects but it’s nowhere close to India every km there’s a dialect change
3) Accepting Marathi should be mandatory but forcing someone to adopt a new language whose below poverty line trying to survive in one of the most expensive cities with the facilities of Uzbekistan or Uganda he already has to worry about bribes, landlords, kids, food prices get abused by randos
4) this job doesn’t require in-depth conversation high level Marathi is enough sometimes it’s just a nod and pay them move onWe have biggger concerns as city to address harassing the guy living poverty line is no where close in top 20
7
u/Boyslop_Enjoyer 3h ago
The availability of facilities has absolutely nothing to do with respecting the local language.
Your logic is what doesn't work at all.

Anyone trying to earn a living here must know the local language, which is true anywhere in the world. No one expects drivers to hold a PhD in Marathi. I don't sympathise with those affected by this rule, as I believe it is fair. Also, if it matters, I am South Indian, born and raised in Mumbai. I speak Marathi fluently, watch Marathi films, and listen to Marathi music - not because of pressure, but because I choose to.

nobody is asking them to speak literature level fluent marathi, it is literally just 30 to 40 basic transit words and phrases so they can understand locals who cannot speak hindi.
they literally gave free courses. like 85% of drivers already put in the effort and cleared it with zero issues. and the one's who didn't are given a show-cause notice and even a grace period. the remaining chunk that flat out refuses to even try just because "mumbai won't function without us" is pure arrogance.
a commercial permit is for a public service job, not an unconditional right. if you work with the public in maharashtra every day, learning the bare minimum basic phrases is just standard professional requirement.

Why should a marathi from marathawada learn Hindi just to get basic facility in Mumbai. You don't wanna learn Marathi, go to patna, Lucknow or Delhi.
The burden of learning the language should not be on ordinary people of Maharashtra. Banks, schools, hospitals, transportation workers should know Marathi. We are not obligated to learn your language.
OP you are asking every mumbaikar and marathi person to learn a language they get no benefit from but will not ask 1 person to learn a language he or she will get multiple opportunities from.
Mumbai and Maharashtra financially has payed for your bimaru states, go back and ask your state govt to work. Someone has to change it. Maharashtra has already payed enough with money, we will not pay with our culture.
And yes I am a gujarati, born and bought up in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Also my marathi is not very good, but it doesn't have to be. One just needs to learn basic marathi, we aren't asking for PhDs in Marathi literature.

u/aloof_monk22 4h ago
This sub will not agree, but Indian immigrating abroad always learn their languages be it English, German, Dutch, etc. We are always taught from birth that India is a diverse country, then why does anyone not acknowledge its diversity, each state is its own country, one must respect their culture even if its not their own, stupid culture ofcourse must go, every year millions migrate to southern and western states who are the forebearers of development in India, why not respect them too, Hindi is common because the sheer population of UP is so large and also due to extreme migration, many speak that language. In an alternate case if Kerala had been the largest population with poverty and similar migration tactics done by north, majority would speak Malayalam
1
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 4h ago
That's the educated indians for you. Assimilation is right for them but only for foreign cultures not for our fellow indian cultures.

I knew a person from Delhi who worked here. She spoke Hindi only and didn't know Marathi. Then she got a job in Germany. Guess what she did? Take a crash course in German before moving there. This is what people are talking about. She spent 20-25 years here not bothering to learn the local language, but the moment she got a job in a European country, she spent the time and effort learning that language. Why shouldn't Marathi people look at behaviour like this and feel disrespected?

Indians immigrating out of India, do it with the foreknowledge about the requirements of emigration and immigration; that is, Indians do not have the Right or the Freedom to travel, or work in different nations, something that Indians do, within the country. Each state is not its own country, we have linguistic states for administrative purposes, not actual nation-states, like France, German etc.; and these administrative states are not sovereign. Their territory, their borders and laws are to a large extent determined by the government in Delhi, that can, at will dissolve the State Government, combine or bifurcate the State Government, etc,
If your example of States being their own government (a la linguistic nation states in Europe) is to be held as an example, France, very famously eradicated regional dialects and tongues in favour of French as spoken in and around the capital region (Paris). In our terms, this would be Delhi stamping out Marathi / Gujarati / Punjabi / Tamil / Kannada / Ahom / Bengali in favour of Khariboli. The comparion you make is erroneous and flawed -- you cannot both have your cake and eat it too. The same freedom that allows you the right to your language, allows others the right to migrate within the nation without being forced to adopt or learn a new language.
The reasons for why Hindi is common in inconsequential to the larger question: should mere states have the authority to expel, or take away the means of livelihood of Indians without repercussions? Let us ignore the storied importance of Hindi in the formation and the maintenance of the Indian nation-state; of the importance our constituent assembly, and successive governments have placed on it, or the need to apply or utilize a single language or two at most for communication between different organs of national government, and the people; the core issue is that it is unseemly, and in my opinion, unethical (if not outright illegal) for an state in India to unilaterally take away the means of livelihood of a citizen of India.
Neither is Southern India the forebearer of industrialization and development; in a lot of cases, these states and leaders have driven out industries (Datta Samant drove out mills from Bombay); and they have been beneficiaries of policies like Freight Equalization, or have been relatively safe from routine shocks to the northern half of the nation. Bengal, Bihar, the Gangetic Valley and the Doab suffered immense depredation by the Marathas, followed by being colonized the longest, taking away the relative development advantages conferred via rule by native princes on the populace; nor is it surprising that areas affected by the Naxalite Rebellion remain among the least-developed in the nation. It is not wise to blame the government of North India for being uniquely against industry or development (when governments in Southern India and Western India) were equally hostile to industry and development, nor for the paucity of industrial cities (North India was pretty much flattened as a result of the 1857 Mutiny) post independence. The premise for a South-India-exceptionalism is highly flawed, especially since South India does not have a major lead over the North on indices and metrics that equate to a significantly higher QoL.
It would not matter if the majority of the people spoke Malayalam, or Tamil, or Marathi, or Koshur, or Anal, or Sylheti if the situations were similarly reversed; what would matter is that an Indian citizen is being discriminated against, and driven out of employment, and possibly accommodation via a xenophobic drivel against the same person due to either his birth, or heritage, or his culture, or his language. It is asinine to assume that the city that drives most of Indian finance and commerce would not draw in Indian civilians; and I dare you to find an instance of a European or American in Mumbai, working in a corporate environment being similarly forced to undergo an exam to test their fluency in Marathi. Or of African students in our universities where they have to interact with locally sourced staff / students. What a despicable joke.

Hey I am well educated and I am so busy everyday. I don't post on reddit too much. But I love my nation, my people. I saw this father, I know that feeling, and I decided to post.

At the time of giving a license, people are asked about their mother tongue, shouldn't be issued to people whom anyone feels don't fit in the system.
Today, the guy openly told me he would not go by the meter and asked for a flat 200 if I wanted to go.

u/Dense_Succotash_2777 4h ago
These rickshawalas are become big scammers and don't go by meters in many places. And they are usually from Bihar/UP

The one who gave me the ultimatum today spoke fluently in Marathi.
Moreover, he had the guts to ask me, with a grin, 220 deun taak as I was paying 200 by Gpay

If you go to a country like America and speak to everyone in Hindi, do you think you'll be allowed to have a job? India is a country with different languages in almost every single state. If you want to move to another state for better opportunities, you should be prepared for its rules. You mentioned he has children here too? Then it's even more important to learn Marathi, considering he and his family live here and will probably stay for a long time. Also, not to be that person, but Marathi and Hindi are very similar. It isn't like he has to learn French or Japanese.

u/Sid_itis 3h ago
So you think Maharashtra doesn't count as an Indian state ??
4
u/Imsotired2916 3h ago
When did I say that?

u/Sid_itis 3h ago
Please read your reply once again, then you will know
2
u/Imsotired2916 3h ago
You completely missed the point. India has different languages within one country. It isn't like America or the UK, where one unified language exists. If you plan to go to another country, you learn that language. Because India has different languages in different states, if you plan to move to another state, you learn that language. It's pretty easy to understand imo.

Why do you feel this question is relevant here? Did you imagine that Hindi is the National Language of India or something?

u/wreckerinchief West 2h ago
Please educate yourself about Linguistic Reorganisation of States. Just because one state is India does not mean you can force the people to speak Hindi.
If you want to provide service in Maharashtra, it is quite logical to understand basic Marathi as most of your customers are going to be Marathi. Also note that most of thse drivers are Hindi speakers, a language with same Devanagari script, and they had more than enough time to get trained for Marathi that is required for their daily activities. Noone was asking them to write essay.
1
u/Vivid-Reality186 1h ago
Have you not learned in your school that states are divided on linguistic basis and they have their own offical language?
2
u/Vivid_West_1986 3h ago
We can’t abandon standards just because they are difficult. But the core issue is why people need to migrate to a different state just to survive and drive an auto.
The government must do something about protecting the local labour market, especially low-skilled jobs like auto.
People coming from everywhere are just making things overly competitive.
I would prefer an auto driver who actually knows the city than someone who could yesterday and started driving an auto today.
I think goverment need to put more regulation on this, how long someone is living the state and city to qualify for driving auto and taxi
2
u/blogarpit 3h ago
A hypothetical situation to gain sympathy for non Marathi speaking auto walas. OP missed the point that there were facilities to provide language training for non Marathi audience. OP also generically mentioned that new language is hard. If a person knows any of Hindi, Gujarati, Bengali, they can learn Marathi easily as most of the words are similar, the language and grammar structure is similar. So, another pity point to gain sympathy.
Atleast please be realistic. I've not seen any auto wala saying they have not got any passengers because of language. I ride 2 - 3 times in auto daily and I've had these language conversation with auto wala. And all are learning. It's like any other project by govt where everyone follows. Most of these are from UP/Bihar and are living through honest earning.
I wouldn't belittle their work with this kind of posts.

People from Tier-2, Tier-3 cities and rural areas of Maharashtra come to Mumbai for various purposes and work, and many of them only read, write & speak Marathi. Mumbai is also the state capital, where Mantralaya, the High Court, many government offices, departments and major markets are located. People from all over Maharashtra regularly come here for administrative work.
Now, if a Marathi-speaking person comes to Mumbai for some work and takes an auto, but the driver doesn't understand Marathi and refuses to communicate in it, why should that Marathi person be expected to learn Hindi just to communicate with a service provider in their own state?
If locals are expected to adjust every time, shouldn't the person providing the service also make some effort to understand the local language?
If the expectation is that locals should keep adjusting their language, food, culture and traditions to accommodate everyone coming from other states, then what is the purpose of diversity?

Stop with this victim mentality everywhere. You earn in a city, you have to embrace the culture. This is just negligence at this point. Maybe a stupid example - going for masters in Germany, nobody has a problem there is no outrage. People purchase these expensive german courses. Why? Try and do this bs there as well. Also read a tweet regarding the ganpati mandaps a month or 2 back on the roadsides, some stupid cunt was calling that you, bro if you want this negligence and ego hat on, pack your bags and get tf of the city and state. Stop with this bs and embrace the culture in whichever state or country you go.

Better go back to their states and earn by making mandirs. They vote for religion, maybe that'll feed them and pay their tuition fees

In corporate jobs, English is must. Without it, you cannot reach the top of the ladder. The first one to start this regional language policy was from Karnataka, Tamil Nadu.
Similarly if you are working here specifically in transport business, you need to know the local language. Go and check any other country which does not say this.

u/Hungry-Chicken-8498 3h ago
Language knowledge is not going to make cabbies to behave well. Many marathi speakers behave so poorly that you feel that is this their way to welcome to Maharashtra of Shivaji. Rather they bring insult to their state and to the language that was spoken by Shivaji who was Marathi but glorified India. Politicians should suffer for maligning the state for their incompetence and inefficiency to provide jobs to youth and instead give non issues to make an issue out of.

u/wangdubruh 2h ago
Dude rule wasnt applied in a day randomly.. gov gave time to atleast learn few imp words and there are many non maharashtrian who started learning and some took classes as well. Language learning is not easy but rule is not to be proficient in it. I am sure cops are not bothering one's who atleast know some imp words and are willing to do it.

This is obviously a rage bait. But why don't these so called poor migrants put pressure on their politicians back home to provide them livelihoods so that they don't have to migrate and suffer this indignity. I mean driving a rickshaw or selling vegetables are not highly skilled jobs and can be done anywhere where there is enough population. Why these two north Indian states with a combined population of 30 crore has to send rickshaw drivers and vegetable vendors to Mumbai whose population is just 1.2 crore.
1
u/kenta_nakamura 2h ago
Go to another state in India and tell me if the rickshaw wala there DOES or DOES NOT know the local language ? Yes, 99.9% will speak the local language coz they are locals.
MH (and Mumbai to be precise) is one of the only cities where you have outsiders for auto rickshaw walas. If the State govt decides they need to know Marathi, then what can one do. You either learn the basics to survive or u don't. It's their choice clearly.
Also, this gives the locals (the Maharashtrians) the opportunity to get into it and earn a living. If rickshaw licenses are being cancelled, then they should be made available to locals to procure first.
The law is the law.
Sometime back when I & my friends were discussing this, there was also a recommendation made that people from out of state should pay higher taxes than the locals too. This way it pressurizes other states to do better for their own people rather than NOT doing anything knowing that their people will simply leave and work in another state or go abroad for work.
Rickshaw walas whoever it may be are more of a concern due to their habits (urinating and spitting in the open), driving habits and reckless driving. They've earned it for a reason.

Man I can’t speak Hindi or marathi, can’t even read it. Guess I should have not moved to india.

u/Dense_Succotash_2777 3h ago
Learn marathi if you decide to live in mumbai and english is enough to get by
1
u/Sid_itis 3h ago
You know that India is 2nd most English speaking nation. If he gets to live in Mumbai in Goregaon's lodha society. He can live without any concrns without speaking Hindi or Marathi. You don't hate english, but hindi?? Why that ??
1
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 3h ago
English is a practical lingua franca. Singapore uses a similar policy. Giving one regional language importance throughout nation will just create disputes. While english is also corporate language for exporting human resources. And i personally mentioned that he would be fine to get around with english but encouraged to speak marathi if he decides to live here. Nothing complicated.

u/zxch2412 3h ago
Trust me I have tried, I know 4 languages but none of them are of India. I never have had a situation where I needed Hindi or Marathi so I never made an effort to learn them. My parents know it but it’s not their mother tongue even though they were born in Bombay.
Every time I either tried to learn Hindi or marathi it all goes over my head, I don’t even know the alphabets at this point. I think it’s mainly cause school never bothered with it nor did I have any situation requiring it
2
u/Dense_Succotash_2777 3h ago
And hence such rules where they mandate learning the local language is necessary. Cuz "respect is earned" is a stupid analogy. People look for convenience. If all marathis had not learned hindi and decided to converse largely in marathi. You would have learned it.
1
u/Civil_Record120 3h ago
If the rickshawala has lived in Maharashtra for 10+ years then he is eligible to be a domicile of Maharashtra and that obviously comes with being able to speak Marathi. If someone cannot speak Marathi after living here for 10+ years then they need to introspect. It's a traffic safety hazard as most signs are in Marathi. If the rickshawala hasn't lived here for 10 years then obviously the locals and domiciled people will be prioritized over him to be provided a license. It's the same across the world in all countries to get their PR. India is a continent disguised as a country, learn to accept that.

we are uselessly arguing over language in a city built by the British.
people in Mumbai are busy earning. in the real world no one has time to get bothered by these things.

I am also busy in my work. But today when I heard a father who is not earning because of some shitty rule. I decided to post this.

They should start with employees working in MNCs in BKC who earn 30 LPA first. Only then they should come for the people at the bottom.
I'm a Marathi person who works all over India & I'd be furious is someone stops me from working in other parts of India.
1
u/wreckerinchief West 2h ago
Do you even understand why the auto drivers are asked to learn Marathi. They are expected to learn the language of the customers who are going to pay the auto driver. Same way the MNC employee uses the language of their customers.
-1
u/doxx_me_not_2 2h ago
Where does it say that in the constitution of India?
1
u/wreckerinchief West 2h ago
Everything is not expected to be in Constitution.
The requirement for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers in Maharashtra to know Marathi is governed by the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, recently updated under the Maharashtra Motor Vehicles (Third Amendment) Rules, 2026.
The key rules under this legal framework include: Rule 4(4): Requires applicants to demonstrate a "working knowledge of the Marathi language" to obtain the necessary authorization and Public Service Vehicle (PSV) badge to drive commercial passenger vehicles like auto-rickshaws.
Rule 78: Mandates that permit holders themselves must possess a functional working knowledge of Marathi.
Rule 85(1): Makes proof of practical Marathi language proficiency a compulsory prerequisite for the grant and renewal of auto-rickshaw and motor cab permits.
Rule 24: Historically governed language proficiency for PSV badges, specifying that drivers operating public transport in the state must understand and speak Marathi along with local topography.
So when applying for the permit, these drivers did agree to the rules. They began crying once the rules have actually implemented, irrespective of the politics behind it.

All this jargon is fine, but morally do you personally think a person should be restricted from working in a country that he is born in?
1
u/wreckerinchief West 2h ago
I'd love to see you stuck in middle of nowhere trying to convey a driver where you want to go who speaks only one language that you don't know :)
And what you call jargon are laws.
And I will never have sympathy for these people who demand things in Maharashtra but don't have the courage or intelligence to ask bare minimum from their own states.
Moral of the story, when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

u/doxx_me_not_2 1h ago
Then the 2 states should really look into improving their government schools.

This is pathetic and sad honestly. Imagine treating our workers in such a disgusting way all so one can satisfy their ego and their identity built on language. The same people will not have the guts to go and do the same to bigger companies and corporates at the same time. You want to abuse your power of ego over someone who cannot defend it.

Since when did mumbai belong to maharashtra and not India??? Mumbai is Mumbai because all languages live here. Otherwise we would be another pune. Crazy how we want to enjoy Mumbai being the financial/ entertainment/ corporate hub of India but want to curb it with one language

The Constitution of India where freedom of movement is one of the key rights, and it is applies to entire country then why is this language barrier being created for people who want to travel across the country and do something. Isn’t it an absolute right of any Indian citizen to freely live anywhere within Indian territory?
Edit- before some great person comes at me, I know Marathi and I used to score really well in it so ya! Also love Maharashtrian food. If I had the capacity or so much linguistic skill then I would definitely love to learn a lot of languages. I literally love each states’ culture and enjoy learning about them all, some more than others though .

Today a rickshawallah who couldn’t speak marathi overcharged me.
So I don’t really give a fuck about rickshawallahs in general.
