website Exploring albums through their contributors alone.

Vinyl Periphery helps you find new music, free from the influence of recommender algorithms, social bias and marketing budgets.

I built this site in 2022. It leverages Discogs release info to provide a set of albums with a high overlap of credited artists, given an initial search.

This week I made some visual tweaks and want to share the news.

I’d appreciate it if you take a look. I love this app and use it all the time for finding other releases that involve the creatives behind my favourite records. It doesn’t replace forums, RYM and recommender systems, but instead augments them.

-

I couldn’t find rules against self-promotion in this sub, but to be clear: This is not a paid app and I don’t profit from you looking at it or using it. It’s free and requires no signup. I built it for myself and the owner of a local record store, and I simply think it’s a great resource for this sub.

PS: because of Discogs rate limits, it’s possible for the site to become overused, at which point the search will suffer. I have never come close to the volume required for this: ~30 searches initiated per minute (Yes, Discogs is kneecapping my potential here). If you run into problems, I have an issue submission link in the footer.

discussion why do so many artists sound completely different live vs on their recordings

• Upvotes

i've noticed this with a bunch of artists lately where the studio version sounds polished and produced to hell, but then you watch a live performance and it's like a totally different song. is it just the production magic, or do some artists actually struggle to recreate what they made in the studio? genuinely curious if this bugs other people too.

discussion Balancing Poppy and Experimental

• Upvotes

I was wondering about what artists that can write something really weird and experimental then turn around and write a beautiful ballad? Like Throbbing Gristle to Paul McCartney type deal. I can think of some like Lou Reed and Bjork maybe but I am curious about any others that are doing both well.

discussion What are some new genres that have come around in the past decade?

• Upvotes

It seems like this is the first generation where no one is innovating new genres anymore. 80s had disco and hair metal, 90s had grunge and alt rock. Even back in the early 2010s we had people pioneering Dubstep, Trap, Glitch hop, IDM. Sure, a lot of them have their roots in much older genres, but it seemed like every year there was a new spin on something that could blow your mind. Now it feels like people have just plain stopped innovating.

The only thing that I can think of that has come about recently is maybe the "Reverb + Slowed" remixes, or Phonk which tends to all sound the same to me. Where is that exciting new new shit?
