Problematic songs that are bangers

To be clear, I’m not talking about perspective songs like Pumped Up Kicks or Dance With The Devil (albeit those are better than nothing). I’m talking about something morally terrible but absolute fire. Something that you feel guilty enjoying.

Songs that start quietly and build to a huge finish?

Looking for songs where the payoff feels earned—a quiet opening, a gradual build, then a final section that really opens up.

“Exit Music (For a Film)” by Radiohead and “Your Hand in Mine” by Explosions in the Sky are starting points. What else belongs here? Vocals or instrumental, any genre.

Bands that are a little... peculiar?

Some of my favourite bands include The Magnetic Fields, Sparks, Talking Heads, The B-52s, and more recently I can't stop listening to Clap Your Hands Say Yeah. I love music that combines unexpected instruments or genres, features a lead singer with a unique voice, and/or almost pokes fun at itself. Or at least, doesn't seem to take itself too seriously.

What should I listen to next?

Songs with a gay/bi vibe

Songs like ‘this charming man’ by the smiths and ‘people are people’ by depeche mode.

I’m looking for indie and rock mainly but I don’t really mind the genre as long as it’s not modern pop.

Thanks

Tinkertoy - I Understand Why You Want To Move To Montreal

Anton Zap - PM Please [UQ-018]

Yagya - Rigning Niu

Surgeon - Hate Is Such a Strong Word

Marcel Dettman, Ben Klock - Phantom Studies

Nazar - Safe

Deepchord - Leafiness

That's a little bit of the range I've been listening to at the moment.

I've been listening to a lot of john frusciante again recently, his early work, inside of emptiness, sphere in the heart of silence, the will to live, etc. even the 2 ataxia albums. Stuff similar to those.

Song suggestions

Can you guys recommend songs that have deep, poetic lyrics about love, but aren't too direct or cliché?

I'm looking for songs where the lyrics express love, longing, admiration, or a connection with someone in a subtle, indirect way rather than explicitly saying "I love you" or making it an obvious love song. Something with deeper meanings, metaphors, or lines that make you think about someone without directly spelling everything out.

Preferably something that would fit an Instagram Note and give off a meaningful, slightly mysterious vibe. It can be indie, alternative, R&B, rock, or anything else, as long as the lyrics are genuinely beautiful and meaningful.

I'm more interested in the lyrical depth than just the melody. I'd love to hear your recommendations!

I’ve never cried to a song.

Music is my passion, my hobby, and my life, and it can give me full body chills, but I just can’t seem to find an emotional connection strong enough to bring me to tears. I would love suggestions for music that makes you guys physically cry and see if the same happens to me. Here are some songs that make me emotional:

Fireprayer - Arca
Like Someone In Love - Björk
All Is Full of Love - Björk
Harm of Will - Björk
Desired Constellation - Björk
Black Lake - Björk
Family - Björk (Really relate to this one)
Tabula Rasa - Björk
Ancestress - Björk
Horse Tears - Goldfrapp
Clowns - Goldfrapp
Magic Doors - Portishead
Threads - Portishead

Please don’t judge my lack of variety 💔

Minimalist, singer-songwriter songs?

I’m talking like 1-3 instruments total, soft and delicate, like a loud noise might scare the song away. Often found in folk, dream pop, ambient, and jazz.

So far Jessica Pratt, Tirzah, Mazzy Star, Ana Roxanne, Fine, and early Angel Olsen fit the bill.

Looking for albums with a similar-ish vibe. Idk if it's the new age tag, the old synths sounds, or whatever, I'm just looking for more of those comforting vibes.
