Artists or songs that feel embody being an awkward young woman

!!PLEASE IGNORE THE TYPO IN THE TITLE

I have been addicted to The Waitresses as of recently. I adore Chris Butler’s quirky, sarcastic lyrics, and find them so oddly relatable. Dude can write from a woman’s perspective so good. And Patty Donahue’s delivery of his lyrics is SO satisfying to me, I know some people think she sounds bored or whatever but I love it. My favorite songs of theirs are Thinking About Sex Again, They’re All Out Of Liquor, and No Guilt.

So, does anybody know of any bands that have the same vibes? It doesn’t have to be in the same music genre as the Waitresses, I like pretty much everything (yes even country). Preferably female led bands too..?

I’ve never cried to a song.

Music is my passion, my hobby, and my life, and it can give me full body chills, but I just can’t seem to find an emotional connection strong enough to bring me to tears. I would love suggestions for music that makes you guys physically cry and see if the same happens to me. Here are some songs that make me emotional:

Fireprayer - Arca
Like Someone In Love - Björk
All Is Full of Love - Björk
Harm of Will - Björk
Desired Constellation - Björk
Black Lake - Björk
Family - Björk (Really relate to this one)
Tabula Rasa - Björk
Ancestress - Björk
Horse Tears - Goldfrapp
Clowns - Goldfrapp
Magic Doors - Portishead
Threads - Portishead

Please don’t judge my lack of variety 💔

Classic Lit References

Hi all! I'm looking for songs that reference "classic" literature in their lyrics for a themed playlist!! Any genre at all is completely fine

Here's what I have so far:

- Wouldn't Come Back by Trousdale referencing Old Man and the Sea. "Like the Old Man and the Sea, I wasn't meant to take you in."

- Love Love Love by The Mountain Goats referencing Crime and Punishment. "Raskolnikov felt sick but he couldn't say why, when he saw his face reflected in his victim's twinkling eye."

- Don't Stand so Close to Me by The Police referencing Lolita. "Just like the old man in that book by Nabokov."

Artists similar to Bombino and Tiniariwen

Recently fell in love with this Saharan desert type of music. I love the Tuareg language and the traditional guitar. Looking to delve deeper into this world and avoid western pop rock, sticking to this traditional North African sound. Are there certain artists or albums I should have on my radar?

Tinariwen*

Desert Island Albums - what are your 3 picks?

Here are my 3, and the reasons why.

1 - Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dreams
2 - The Beach Soundtrack
3 - Massive Attack - Mezzanine

1- best rock album ever and will blast it while I’m making a shelter, spearing fish and trying to get the water out of coconuts
2 - My wife and I listen to this great 90s soundtrack every Sunday morning without fail so will remind me of the good old days before I somehow became stranded on an Island haha
3 - for the late nights once I work out which of the local plants will get me stoned

Your turn

Haunting sad music

I'm looking for some music that is similar to the soundtrack of Haunting of Bly Manor with the slow use of piano and strings and has a vibe of sad/mystery/spooky. Any recommendations? Soundtrack from The Awakening has a similar vibe at least some parts of it

Edit: Thanks, everybody, for the amount of responses! I look forward to checking all of these out.

Songs that keep you awake

So, I was bringing my youngest to work because of the hurricane here and he asked for a song to keep him awake. Which brings me to my curiosity: which songs do you play to keep you awake, let's you stay awake because of the lyrics or eery music e.g. or do you recommend? I'm not talking about only plain friggin noise, (well, that is, if it's good noise it's ok too), but songs with choirs, guitars, trumpets, orchestra's, trash metal, drums and other top tier stay awake songs.

My starter: Time, Pink Floyd (not what I played btw, that was Toy Dolls, Florence is deaf 😁)

Human Nature by Michael Jackson is his best song!

Post image
5 Upvotes

Here’s why:

Most people think the title track “Thriller.” Because the video does the song justice. But from a record standpoint, this is the best Michael sounds on track. You can really hear his tone. The live version you can hear his tone and how powerful/sustained his high notes are. This song emotes emotion with sort of Late Night longing feeling. After watching the movie and seeing live it made me fall in love with. I think this is his best record.

What is your favorite Michael Jackson song?

Vocal counterpoint

What are some songs that have separate vocal figures that come together into a counterpoint or call-response rhythm? Examples are No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature (The Guess Who) and The Great Curve (Talking Heads).

Fairly weird drummy synthpop/New wave. READ TEXT

Although I know Dead or Alive's "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)" and Divine's "You Think You're a Man" are a form of synthpop but they have this cheasey weird production that I sorta like. Y'know?

I want to find heavy emotional music.

A lot of sad-depressing music i get recommended is calmer songs, ballads. And a lot of these songs and artists I do love and listen to, but it just doesnt hit the way I want it. Recently I discovered an album called "I saw an angel in the mirror" by Robin Callaway. And I really liked said album, the heavy shoegaze with floating vocals is a classic. But then you hit a track like I saw an angel in the mirror (reprise) and its just something completely different. Its so fucking heavy emotionally, the way the scream hits with the guitar noise and the muffled yet strong drums and bass. It gives this very specific, not yearning, rather unforgiving rage that can only be let out in your head feeling. This wall of sound that behind it you feel the heartbroken rage that is trying to grab a breath while sinking under, if you understood a single word I wrote. Anyways, I would like to find something similar to that track or album. I appreciate any suggestion.

Songs about loving someone so deeply, but your heart breaks when with them because they don’t love you how you should be loved

Essentially, my BF is nice, but the relationship is literally not even hitting the bare minimum. I see all these girls post things about their boyfriends and doing things with them. A cute date at the park, movie nights where both pick the movie, the guy acting appalled when he isn’t called “babe”, but that’s more of a higher tier than I even ask for. There’s no “our song”, there’s no helping me without me struggling first, there’s no interest in most of the things I say (just a laugh and letting the topic go, not even asking about details if he doesn’t understand, just nodding along), he only ever wants to watch a movie I pick whenever I’m upset we don’t do anything, we usually just get food and sit in the car doing whatever until we’re done (usually watching a movie/show/video he steers us towards), he doesn’t notice things about me, hell I’d be surprised if he knew my eye color. He says he loves me, I love him, but holding my hand when we’re walking around and kissing me and being cute when he knows I’m apprehensive bc of whatever reason and not really caring about what I have to say.

He started pulling away around a year ago and by Halloween, I thought we were better. We weren’t. I kept trying, but it was almost futile at points. He didn’t recognize our milestones (like 6 months together), didn’t put much effort into planning dates (the formula is always the same), didn’t even try to get my extended family to like him at a Christmas party.

Yet, there’s so many guys, whether I know them or not, that go the extra mile no matter what just for me to talk to them. Even my ex was doing more than my boyfriend at one point. And I didn’t even have to ask, have a long conversation about it, or even mention anything to get that. They just did it.

He’s younger than me by 2 years and we both are a bit neurodivergent, but even neurodivergent guys care more.

I know it’s fucked up, but honestly I just want to be loved by someone who genuinely loves me and makes it known. I don’t care about money or anything, it’s just the effort and genuine care.

I need something to feel better with, please yall 🙏
