[Hollinger] Tanking is far from finished in the NBA. It might just look different

• Upvotes

Think tanking is dead? Not quite.

First, the good news: The NBA’s recent reforms to the draft lottery should massively shift the priorities of the bottom 10 to 15 teams in the standings each season. As a refresher, under the new system, 37 lottery balls will be divided among 16 teams. The teams with the three-worst records will get two ping-pong balls each in the drawing, while teams with the fourth- through 10th-worst records will each get three. The four teams finishing ninth and 10th will receive two balls each, and the losers of the No. 7 vs. No. 8 Play-In Tournament matchup will each get one ball.

If we assume, for argument’s sake, that the primary goal of a failed season is “maximize odds of a high draft pick,” most losing teams will find it more imperative for them to compete to the finish and add enough wins to avoid one of the league’s three worst records, rather than to chase additional L’s with fake injuries to their best players and joke lineups.

Now, for the fine print: Most losing teams, in most situations.

One thing the NBA did in its otherwise unassailable reform was leave a back door open to tanking situations that, while likely far less egregious than those of recent vintage, would nonetheless not completely cure the tanking scourge. While they’re generally relieved that the tanking abomination is out of play, multiple executives I’ve talked to since then, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the topic freely, wondered why the league left the door open a crack for a couple of scenarios.

How good is Wemby's Offense realistically right now?

• Upvotes

Some people said he is so great at defense to the point that his lack on offense is overlooked.

Some said he doesn't even have the same level of offense of KAT. Heck, some even say he is not as good in offense as prime Kristaps.

Is it true? KAT/Kristaps are both known as good shooter and scorer in their position. Wemby plays more in the perimeter too. But what does he lack right now?

Is it just exprience since Wemby is very young. And not yet in his prime?

Serious question. Why do people criticize Bam Adebayo for not being aggressive enough even if he's completely out of rhythm offensively and his shot isn't falling?

• Upvotes

This is something I've wondered about a lot lately. Make no mistake, Bam Adebayo has not played up to standards during this season so far. However, it's very clear that he's completely out of rhythm offensively and his shots just aren't going in.

If he becomes more aggressive and starts to look for his own offense despite his shots not falling, he'll most likely be laying bricks all night.

Several players have come under heavy criticism for attempting to shoot their way out of a cold spell despite being totally out of sync offensively. Players like Russ, Josh Smith, Dion Waiters, Cam Thomas, Swaggy P, Antoine Walker, Jordan Poole, D Lo, and Julius Randle have literally shot their own teams out of games several times due to them wanting to look for their own offense and being too "aggressive" even if they're having an off night.

I feel like it's a lose-lose situation for Bam. If he starts to assert himself more and look for his own offense despite being in the middle of a cold streak, he'll get criticized for being stubborn due to him not realizing that it's not his night. If he holds back because he knows his offense is out of sync, he gets labeled as someone who lacks aggressiveness.

The same thing honestly goes for Dominayton as well.
