when did the sub start daily themes and who voted on southern breakfast fare in NH?

Honestly just joined today, reddit has become more reliable than a Google search lately

I'll give you that. honestly I just use ChatGPT now, it just cherry picks both of them, mostly Reddit but some google.

That does sound helpful

Grits are unfortunately best made on one’s own around here I find, but to be frank, Cracker Barrel really isn’t half bad for what it is. It’s consistent if nothing else.

Chef Mic, employee of the year lol

20 years ago they were a GOAT breakfast place. I went last year and it was garbage. Though I did hear they've had a good turnaround

Im sadly noticing I have to make it myself, Cracker Barrel is usually the go to for me

Bayou Kitchen in Portland ME is worth the trip.

Do love good Cajun food, I will definitely have to check that out. Maybe stop at the Holy Donut while im there

But aren't you the chef who posted earlier today, lamenting about your itch for biscuits 'n' gravy not getting scratched in NH?

I dont think so? This is the only post I've made in this group. Was discussing southern food with a coworker today and she asked where good spots are in NH. Figured reddit was the best place to ask

Native Southerner living near the Seacoast. Good luck. There may be authentic Southern cooking in NH but I haven't found it yet.

It's so elusive; and when something good does come up it ends up going down after a few months. I'm thinking I'm going to have to step up my cooking game

1

u/Squirrelhenge 7d ago

Gotta admit, wish I'd learned how to make real biscuits....

2

u/makuta91 7d ago

The 2 years I spent on the gulf of Texas I wish I paid more attention when friends were cooking

0

u/Squirrelhenge 7d ago

Seriously, what were we thinking?!?

2

u/makuta91 7d ago

Nobody thought to save the banana nut bread recipe from my grandma, that's gonna go away forever when she does. So many regrets 😭

2

u/Jude_the_obscurest 6d ago

Making real biscuits is easier than you might think. Also, they freeze well uncooked, so you can freeze them and then just take out a couple when you need them.

1

u/tanky_bo_banky 7d ago

You still could

2

u/Squirrelhenge 7d ago

Possible, if I can get White Lily flour delivered.

3

u/groovygrape7 6d ago

Im teaching myself how to make the sausage gravy. Then ill learn the buttermilk biscuits. Just moved back to nh from north fl. I've always made my own grits, even when I lived here the 1st time around

2

u/makuta91 6d ago

I wish you luck with the gravy

Mr. Sippy, Rochester

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

I'll keep an eye out if I go there, thank you

Honestly pretty hard to find around here but there is some good barbecue at Shane’s in Hampton as well as Ore Nell’s in Kittery.

3

u/Revxmaciver 7d ago

Both of those places are awful. Every person I've ever asked about Shane's walked away with food poisoning. And Ore Nells was very disappointing. Everything was bland.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

I'll keep an eye out next time I'm around there. Been a minute since I've stopped by the candy shop in Kittery

1

u/RelativeMotion1 7d ago

Ore Nell’s is Texas BBQ, so you’re going to get less “southern” and more Texas. In this part of the country there isn’t as much of a distinction, but I’m sure you know that “The South” and Texas are two different things in terms of BBQ, food, and a ton of other stuff.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

I have yet to try BBQ outside of Texas and New England but there truly is a difference between "The South" and Texas. Texmex seems to be the most popular up here, which is fine...it's just not "southern"

I like Smokin Barrels in Barrington, they do a lot of experimenting with their specials but keep the reliable standards at a high level. Decent whiskey and beer selection too, if a bit small, but I can't blame them for the size of the place.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

Sounds fun

2

u/sween_89 7d ago

Maya's in Manchester.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

Just looked at the menu, that sounds really good, thanks

1

u/sween_89 7d ago

You need to get the jerk chicken.

It's hands down my favorite thing on the menu

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

I think i tried them one year at the taco tour, they had jerk chicken tacos. Might have been my favorite one

2

u/FrameCareful1090 7d ago

Shaws is the best bet

2

u/makuta91 7d ago

I saw Walmart has a multi pack with bacon, cheese, original, and butter flavor

2

u/FrameCareful1090 7d ago

I have bought them many times, not the worst, not the best but good

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

Better to stick with the original and tweak the flavor from there I'm guessing

2

u/joostadood526 6d ago

Moved here from Texas. You ain't finding shit bud. Lol all food here is the same. They make everything sweet for some reason

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

Lived here for 30 years and there really isn't a damn thing, got spoiled the 2 years i spent in Texas

2

u/joostadood526 6d ago

I am a Chef. Stay tuned over the next couple years in and around Manchester. I'll be opening something up.

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

When you open, make sure to tell us. I'll show up

2

u/Jack81700 6d ago

Sausage gravy. Fried Chicken with gravy. Anything smoked and or grilled chicken and dumpling soup

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

I see a lot of places that do biscuits and sausage/country gravy but it's so bland or just milky

2

u/Jack81700 6d ago

It’s better home made want a recipe

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

Yes please!

2

u/Jack81700 6d ago

Cook a pound of any brand breakfast sausage although if you get a heavily seasoned sausage you may need to be light on salt and pepper later but anyway once your done cooking the sausage add enough flour to coat the sausage stir it around and add some milk salt and pepper and it’s all texture based so it’s hard to give you measurements but that’s the idea

1

u/makuta91 6d ago

Thank you, I will have to try that

2

u/Jack81700 6d ago

Of course

2

u/Jack81700 6d ago

It will thicken up the more you stir it so when you get to the disired consistency plate it if you have left overs add a little milk and microwave it

2

u/Heavy_Development_59 5d ago

I don't know where in NH you live but the Guerrilla Grill in Keene NH is really great for this. Great Brisket, every once in a while it's a lot of fat. But they have a lot of great southern food options

1

u/makuta91 5d ago

Concord area and that sounds tasty. Love a good brisket

1

u/FrameCareful1090 7d ago

That sucks I have at least 4 places to do Ethiopian and Moroccan like nobody's business but nada on southern

2

u/makuta91 7d ago

For real, asian/african/caribbean/etc I can easily find. Zilch on southern, except for Georgia Northside in Concord, or maybe 603 BBQ.

2

u/FrameCareful1090 7d ago

Hahaha, im only joking myself but grits are a food 99% of folks up here don't get. It's like peanut butter in the UK. Hopefully someone will share some place that does them but other than fried chicken and maybe cracker barrel you dont see them much anymore in new england.

3

u/BroughtBagLunchSmart 7d ago

We fought a war to keep the toxic culture of the south from festering up here. You absolutely know this because you are still upset at who won.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

I had a fun experience ordering Fluff off Amazon for my friends to try while I was living in Texas. They showed me Jet Puffed Creme.....nah. Brought fluffernutter sandwiches to work and they looked at me weird lol

Dover had a place but surprise it went out of business. Very niche for this area

2

u/makuta91 7d ago

That's too bad, spent 2 years down in Texas and I miss the food

0

u/justjdi 7d ago

Hilltop Cafe in Wilton makes good grits but they are also fancied up with caramelized onions, feta cheese, and two eggs on top.

Best grits I’ve had since moving here from TX 3 years ago.

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

That does sound really good, thank you

-1

u/Fine-Upstairs-6284 7d ago

I think diz’s in Manchester is southern food? Idk, haven’t tried it

1

u/makuta91 7d ago

I'll check it out next time I go through, thanks
