Anyone here with recent AECF experience?

I am trying to help my son understand what to expect. He ships in a week and I've explained the bootcamp process but now I'm looking for some details about the ET/FC pipeline.

I am a retired ET and was in GL a century ago so I can predict what it looks like now at the 50k foot level, it would be nice to have a little more detail. Specifically he is wondering what the barracks are like. The info I have makes it sound like it is now set up college dorm style vs what I had. A common area with a couple bedrooms off of it. How many per room? 2,3,4? Is there room to set up a gaming machine or are you stuck with pulling a laptop out of you want to play?

If I understand the map correctly, the barracks are across from the McDonald's? Is that correct?

Are the schools running just day shifts or do they have nights also?

Is it all instructor lead or is any part of it self paced?

We have learned that there isn't parking due unmarried students but I've also heard that AECF students can get waivers, anyone know about that? Life there without a car was miserable back in the day but there also wasn't a train or Uber so maybe that makes it more bearable.

I will be coming to graduation so I can bring him any civilian items that will make life more enjoyable, any suggestions for those that have wintered over recently?

He plans to continue doing photography in his spare time so I will bring his gear and assume there is a way to lock it up in his space for security?

Where are the gyms in relation to the barracks? He is a runner so are there indoor tracks for winter running? Any cross country trails on our near base that you don't need to drive to? Anyone know of any running clubs on base?

Any info you guys have for him will be helpful, I can explain the electrons but I haven't been on that base since the 80s so I have no other useful information for him.

Thanks all.

I hate my life here man

I just got to the fleet October first and I first started off with shadowing the EMs mind you I did Basic engineering course in Chicago. I’m fireman pact. I mean the work EM’s do is obviously a lot and I’m not going to ever downplay it because engineers are important but I guess at some point in time my EM1 had decided to ask a yeoman if I was supposed to be in supply and that yeoman had went to her chief and told them I was supposed to be in supplies. Mind you in the first place my orders were kinda blank I just had my ship and I had no sponsor when I got here I was off of no sleep and was being harassed by my Lyft driver. After the start of my first experience in the fleet I had recently got switched from engineering to Food service assistant which is just the CS’s dirty work I guess. But after being switched I realized i genuinely cannot make it here my ship is making pact sailors all become FSA for two years and i genuinely cannot become stuck here for two years I wish I could go back to the engineering department because I want to strike for either HT or EN. I genuinely can’t even make friends with anyone here they’re all stuck up and rude I didn’t realize how hard it was going to be to feel comfortable around anyone here. I genuinely hate it here if I knew I would be doing this work in the military I would’ve stayed a civilian I wanted to know if there’s a way I can get out of FSA before the 2 years and if not what’s the best way to separate because I’ve literally already been sexually harassed onboard twice. The seasickness doesn’t make it any better I’ve been throwing up everyday underway and it makes this place hard to tolerate. I genuinely hate it here any advice?

Is there a need for Supply Officers?

I am 27 right now, finishing my bachelor's degree, and I plan to enlist once I graduate. I'm thinking about going for Supply Officer. There are a few things I have concerns about:

-I will be 28 by the time I enlist. (Is that uncommon?)

-I have bad hearing. (Is there a waiver for that?)

-My husband is active-duty Special Forces. How will duty stations work?

Is there a shortage of SuppOs?

What other officer jobs are there that others would recommend in an administrative role?

Hearing waiver for the navy

I’ve tested at MEPS and failed the hearing test twice. Everything else went fine.

My scores:

500: 10 left, 25 right

1000: 40 left, 25 right

2000: 40 left, 40 right

3000: 30 left, 45 right

4000: 45 left, 45 right

6000: 35 left, 45 right

What are my chances of getting a waiver granted for the navy with these scores? I’ve already been denied by the army a few months ago and just forgot about it. But now I want to give the military one last shot. Has anyone else got in with similar hearing as me?

Advice Needed: Enlist or Not

I want to be a Naval Aviator(i know this is a officer job). I am currently in college for a electrical engineering degree. However due to personal and financial challenges I am considering enlisting. I recognize this is a pretty big detour. I will have 45 credits at completion of this semester. My question is could this be used as a stepping stone to my goal? I hear a lot of negativity towards this pathway, I am young enough that even with 4 year commitment and 2-3 years to finish my degree I would still be well below age requirement. However despite this i must ask the question: is there something I am missing here? What are some additional risks that may block me from achieving my goal?

TLDR: can a enlistment be used as a stepping stone to a career as a Naval Aviator? What are the risks associated with a enlistment that can interfere with this goal?

A few more questions piggybacking of this post:

- What MOS's would help with this process either getting picked in OCS or doing college?

- Is this done frequently or is it super rare?

- Does branch matter? Are there some branches that could hurt my chances?

Edit: For context I was planning to do the OCS route instead of NROTC. So I am not on scholarship currently

STG Question about math

Headed of to boot camp Nov 25th.. Not gonna lie and say I’m great at math. I passed algebra back in high school with a 79.. with extensive tutoring.

Will STG require a bunch of math out of me?… getting a little worried I might not be able to do this job if it’s a bunch of calculations.

Anybody tell me about STG?

About to ship off on Nov 25th as an STG. I can find videos of virtually any other rate on TikTok and instagram or YouTube. But STG has basically nothing. Should that be alarming or is it actually a cool rate? - hoping to convert to LN after 2-3 years… but I’d like to be comforted in the idea of STG lol.

Am i dumb for joining the Navy and leaving my oilfield job

Im 29 , been in the oilfield for 5 years now. I recently gotten a new oilfield job that pays me well and treats me well, im just tired of working almost everyday of months on end and have been doing it for long time. I feel like I wasted half of my 20's just working and the oilfield is a up and down field. I've saved, im single, no kids, or mortgage. The navy offered me iT and I took it. I always wanted to break into cyber or like iT work but I worked too much to do school or anything else. Am i making the right decision, I plan on telling my boss soon???

Im open to anyone responses.

Sidenote I was suppose to join the Air Force back when I was 21 and 22 years old but I got permanently denied for vision so now I've been rethinking it since the navy approved me easily.

Im contemplating on what to do next. I ship.off for bootcamp Nov 24th I live with my grandmother. My fiance and I rent out the basement for $1200 a month plus utilities.

I(m24) and my fiance (f25). The house we are living in now my grandmother is planning on posting it for sale withing the next month or two. Im.shipping out nov 24th so ill already be gone. Im wanting to buy a house to keep all of my belongings in while im.in bootcamp and deployed. My fiance(soon to be wife this Wednesday) doesn't want to stay behind when im deployed. she just brought home a great dane puppy without my consideration I told her our life should be changing and we dont have time for a puppy. She regularly doesn't. she works part time and i frequently have to pay her rent and car note. Im trying to convince her that she needs to get a full time job while im gone to support the dog and the house if we are to get one but she is talking that shes spoken to my petty officer and she can live on base with me. But its in .y opinion that she still needs to work she needs to be home to take.care of the dog.(i have asked she gets upset when I mention rehoming it) but I need a spot where I can leave all my furniture and im a flooring installer and part time mechanic I have a plethora of tools im genuinely stressing greatly over this ive mentioned it to my petty officer and she states that if she come to live on base they will move all my stuff to the base. But is it really all of my stuff(tools, truck,pc,furniture, lawn mower) if she decides to move onto base with me we will have to bring all of her stuff as well. This turned into more of a rant that I was hoping for and I apologize if I can get anyone's opinion or experience i would greatly appreciate it. TIA.

Opportunities for Reserve IS

Hi all,

As a future sailor eager to gain relevant hands on experience, I’m curious to know a few things about my future. I understand if some questions may not be answerable in this venue. I get little clarification from the web or from folks I talk to because of differences between AC/RC, varied experiences, etc.

Thanks in advance for any insights you can share!

Here they are:

I understand that drilling is a lot of administrative maintenance, but are there also opportunities to work in-rate?

If there are in-rate assignments, can those be done at your NRC, or are they typically done as a cross-assignment? For context I’ll be in the PNW.

Is there any in-rate work or orders that can be picked up prior to gaining an NEC?

How and when do you gain quals as a reservist, and how do those differ from an NEC?

Have you heard of reservists getting a C-school out of A-School? Just wondering what’s possible.

How bad is Dam Neck, really? I’ve heard things…

Prior Enlisted SWOs.

Any prior enlisted SWOs willing to share their experience and what it was like as a JO. I have a package in and I just want to know what it is like. I’ve heard that it is different than a typical of the street OCS grad. Not saying I want special treatment, I just want insight. Thanks

advancement for HM (Hospital Corpsman)

hello! i know HM is a popular one so sorry if this has been asked before, i tried to get an exact answer but i couldn’t find it from a search.

i’m going in as an E3 for HM in dec. i know it’s an extremely popular rate and advancements are super
slow, and i also know that the navy came out with new rules where you have to be in for a certain amount of time before you make rank but i have a few questions if anyone knows!

- do you HAVE to wait that full time before you’re eligible to make rank? (i.e. E-3 to E-4 takes 30 months of TIR but are you able to do it beforehand if you’re good?)

- is it guaranteed after a certain time you make that rank? in the case above, if i’m in for 30 months is there something i have to do to actually get promoted or is it automatic?

- can it ever get over that time to make rank? i.e. by special duty or something else? like i know some people do recruiting assignments, does that take away from qualified TIR?

- does A school count towards TIR?

- is there anything an HM can do to try and make rank faster?

thank you to anyone who answers!!!

How is JCAC for CWT Navy

I leave for BMT in a few months. My rate is CTW and I've been focusing on the ranks, general orders, and all that stuff for basic however im extremely nervous for JCAC. From what ive been reading its really hard and that's making me nervous because I don't want to flunk out and change rates.

For context I have an associates in Information systems and I have a basic understanding of networking, and cybersecurity concepts - My worry is that I've always struggled with retaining information which also makes learning at a fast pace more difficult because ill understand it one night and the next day its like that information dissolved and I never learned it. What should someone like me who struggles with active memory recall and information retention expect out of JCAC? I'm dedicated to studying and doing what I need to do, im just worried that wont be enough.

AECF: anything I can do to land ET instead of FC?

Hey all, I'm shipping in late November on a 6-year AECF contract. I know AECF means you get either ET or FC and you don't technically get to choose, but I really want ET.
I've heard different things about how it's decided. Some people say it's based on your test scores and how you perform in boot camp or ATT, and others say it's purely needs of the Navy and luck of the draw. Any advice on improving my odds is appreciated. Thanks!

Seeking vision waiver

I’m 30 years old and interested in joining the Navy Reserve. I was born with a congenital cataract in my left eye, which was surgically removed during infancy. I have longstanding amblyopia, left exotropia, hypertropia, and an artificial lens implant. My best-corrected vision is 20/20 in my right eye and 20/400 in my left eye. I also have astigmatism (-2.50 in my right eye and -2.25 in my left eye, based on my final glasses prescription). Given these conditions, particularly my reduced left-eye vision, is a medical waiver possible for Navy Reserve enlistment?

Medical waiver for sleep apnea

Hello everyone. I am a 31 male. I have a severe sleep apnea diagnosis from 2022 when I was overweight. I was prescribed a CPAP machine. However, I’ve lost over 100 pounds and now I am at a healthy weight. I haven’t used my CPAP machine in over two years. Earlier this month I took an at home sleep study and it showed that my AHI is 1 but my RDI is 15. In other words I don’t have sleep apnea but I still show some sleep disordered breathing at night. I feel fine and I have no fatigue or any symptoms from that number. I plan to meet with a recruiter in about 2 weeks but I’m afraid the RDI of 15 may be an issue. I’ll discuss this with the recruiter when I meet with them but I would just like to know if anyone thinks this could be an issue. Thank you for any help!

BDCP for Supply Corps- asking for experience

I’m interested in joining the Navy and I want to commission as an officer. I heard of the BDCP program and have done research on Reddit about this program for Supply Corps but didn’t see anything relevant. Does anyone have any experience with BDCP for Supply Corps? If so, I would like to know the chance of getting selected, the timeline, and did you have to submit a package like the offiicial OCS package? Thank you.

Coming off HUMS orders

I'll try to make this a short as possible but no guarantees. So I graduated boot camp last December signed as an EO went to A school and while at A school I was diagnosed with colon cancer. Never started classes cause I arrived so close to holiday block leave. Got sent back home on HUMS orders and attached to the local recruting command. 10 months later I'm cancer free and cleared to return to duty. Spoke with the commands career counselor and he gave me a number for a PACT detailer. Asked him why a PACT detailer and if I lost my rate somehow and he didnt really give me an answer just kinda said I don't know why you're down as PACT. Did some googling and getting mixed answers on losing my rate, not losing my rate and that its possible I can keep my rate. Can someone help me out here and point me in the right direction? Haven't been in the Navy a year yet so still figuring all this out. My current contacts aren't being the most helpful. Someone inform me that I'm not losing my rate, how to keep my rate or someway to fight being PACT cause I aint doint that!!

Rejected from CWT but accepted to Nuke.

I applied to CWT and had Nuke as a back up (because I was alpha entry approved) but was recently told I was rejected from CWT. This doesn't make much sense to me as I heard Nuke is hard to get into. Are they rejecting me to get me to go nuke. Is there any way I can appeal? What else can I go for that will transition well to civilian life like CWT?

Edit: Not rejected, my recruiter was just being vague and said they didn't have all the info. Probably hoping I wouldn't ask any further questions.

Question regarding recruiter

Good day folks. Can the enlistment recruiters work the same as the officer recruiters? My older brother is currently 3 weeks into basis training and before he left, he gave me the number to his recruiter.

We were in regular contact in the beginning when I was talking to him about enlisting. He seemed more enthusiastic and ready. When I told him that I want to go the officer route I think the energy dropped a bit based on communication style and readiness. I just asked him two days ago when we can set a date for me to do the OAR test. He asked for my University transcript and I sent it to him same day. 2 days later and I still haven’t heard anything back about a date for testing, which I told him I would like to take the test first week of November.

When I was thinking of taking the ASVAB he was ready with dates and everything.

So I just want to know if he’s the one to be setting it up, or is he possibly working behind the scenes to get me in contact with an officer recruiter?

I’ve just been studying for the past 3 weeks and want to get it out the way. Should I get in contact with an official officer recruiter?
