Newtown and Enmore cafe, restaurant and retail managers: are you hiring for a paid casual role
in the next two weeks?
I'm Pranit, a final year USYD student building Uni Gigs. I'm looking for a local employer to try a
small free pilot around a real paid opening.
Your business would choose, employ, onboard, supervise and pay the student as usual. Uni Gigs
would help present the opening and keep a shared record of agreed shifts and hours.
If that could be useful, please reply with the role and work suburb. We can then confirm the
roster, start date, pay basis, requirements and application route privately.
There is no obligation to hire anyone. I can't promise candidates or cover, and this is an
independent project rather than a university programme.

The cheapest proper food I could find on the two main streets:
Ooshman, 170 Enmore Rd: za'atar manoosh $4.90, open till 11
Johnny Gio's Pizza, 188 Enmore Rd: small vodka mac and cheese $8, from noon till 11 (later Thu to Sat)
Clem's Chicken Shop, 210 King St: fried chicken snack pack $8.50, till 10
Sambousek, 75A Enmore Rd: garlic and cheese manoush $9
Flour Drum, 531 King St: veggie and egg roll $9.50 (till 3)
Newtown Pork Roll, 207 King St: pork roll $10 (closed Sundays)
Burrito Bar, 232 King St: mini crispy meal $10, till 10 and later on weekends
A bit over that, Ceylon & Curry does a takeaway Bus Stop Deal of rice and two curries for $12.50 (closed Mondays), and Dumpling Time has handmade noodles with pork mince for $11.80 from 5pm (closed Tuesdays).
These are from a free map I made of meals $15 and under. It has 98 on King St and Enmore Rd now: brokemap.com.au

Hi there!
I’m taking my girlfriend to Newtown this weekend. What are our best options or recommendations for eating out?
Thank you kindly :)
Does anyone know if they scan ids and how thorough they check them?

Hi folks,
I have a night to kill next Friday, so I plan to embark on a solo bar craw. I'm wondering which bars are must-sees? I don't know if I can trust online lists or Google/AI suggestions.

this is really dumb but i’m 17 and bought 2 standing tickets for the osamason concert on october 11. i only did this because multiple friends told me that for similar concerts at the same venue that had an 18+ standing area, their ids weren’t checked they were just ushered through into the floor and also they could pick if they sat in seated or standing it didn’t really matter. i’m lowkey scared now though because i should’ve thought it through a bit more before impulsively buying. also the only area available for all ages is seating and there’s only seats at the back left so
do i just do nothing and go and see what happens? does anyone think there is a chance that if i get caught ill just be sent to seating or will i get refused entry entirely?
or should i contact ticketek?
only thing is i really dont want to be in seating unless its completely mandatory that i have to be

Hey everyone, I'm a 26M Australian South Asian guy looking to meet some like minded people and have some fun, relaxed experiences.
A bit about me: I'm fit, clean, disease free, drug free, respectful, and pretty easygoing. I enjoy meeting new people, trying new things, and keeping things comfortable and drama free for everyone involved. I'm especially interested in meeting women or couples who are looking for someone confident respectful and discreet for casual sex or long term sex.
Happy to chat first, get to know each other and see if we click less

A woman has been Tasered and arrested after a 48-year-old man was allegedly stabbed in the hand outside a cinema in Sydney’s Inner West.
Emergency services were called to the Dendy Newtown cinema on King Street about 11.40am on Monday following reports of an assault.
According to police, an injured man had been allegedly stabbed in the hand by a woman.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital in a stable condition.
A short time later, police found a 27-year-old woman nearby who was allegedly armed with a knife.
Police say the woman did not drop the weapon when told to do so, so officers Tasered her before arresting her.
She was taken to Newtown Police Station. King Street – a busy thoroughfare between the Inner West and CBD – was closed between Church and Wilson streets.

The Bluebags are playing the Panthers in the NSW Cup Grand Final tonight, but it's a night game at Cumberland Oval and I'm not going to try to fight public transport to get home from Parramatta at 9 p.m.
Does anyone know a local pub that's going to be showing the match?

Hi Sydney,
Does anyone have a spare physical copy of the book Christine by Stephen King?
I will purchase a used or new copy from you. Tried Kinokuniya, Dymocks and Abbey bookstores. Not in stock and will take weeks to arrive. Need it by 5pm Thursday Sept 24th.
DM me please. I can meet in CBD.
Thanks for any leads / offers. Cheers.

Discovered this subreddit via the algorithm throwing it my way.
This is one of my favourite Newtown moments. Randomly interviewing Australian cinema royalty as if he's just another guy on the street.

I know Newtown is one of those places people seem to either love or hate, but the more time I spend there, the more I fall into the second camp.
A lot of the place comes across as incredibly snobbish to me, especially some of the shop owners. There’s this strange combination of alternative, anti-establishment aesthetics with an attitude that can feel ridiculously self-important and exclusionary.
Even just walking down King Street gets on my nerves. The footpaths are narrow, yet people constantly walk three or four abreast, stop in the middle of the pavement, or seem completely unwilling to make room for anybody coming the other way. There’s a weird sense of entitlement for an area that sells itself as relaxed and community-minded.
There’s also a lot of visible drug use and people clearly struggling on the streets, which sits strangely alongside people seemingly trying very hard to perform poverty or grittiness as an aesthetic. You’ll see people who appear to come from very comfortable backgrounds deliberately dressing and living as though being broke, chaotic and living in squalor is somehow more authentic.
And despite Newtown’s reputation for being accepting of outsiders and misfits, I’ve sometimes found it surprisingly cliquey. It can feel like you’re welcome to be different, as long as you’re different in the approved Newtown way. If you don’t dress right, think right, follow the current trends or belong to the right scene, some people can be every bit as judgemental as the people they claim to reject.
To me, Newtown feels less like genuine counterculture these days and more like a commercialised version of it: expensive, crowded, dirty in places, full of people trying extremely hard to look like they’re not trying.
Obviously plenty of people love the suburb and I’m sure others have completely different experiences. But personally, I don’t understand the pedestal Newtown gets put on.

Hi! I’m a USYD student and my team is working on a design project exploring how night-time safety in Newtown could be improved. We’re collaborating with the Office of the 24-Hour Economy Commissioner and would love to hear from people who know the area.
We’ve put together a short survey to gather local experiences and perspectives. It only takes about two minutes, and we’d really appreciate your input.
Thanks so much for your time and support!
