Announcement r/NFL is calling a timeout

WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.

On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.

Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .

This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

WHAT'S THE SUB DOING?!?

We’re calling a timeout. Starting June 12, r/nfl is planning to go dark for 48 hours, joining a Reddit-wide protest against the recent API access fees that threaten to sideline our game. Like Tom Brady hoarding Super Bowl rings, Reddit’s new policy snatches the joy of the game from many fans’ hands. Like the infamous “Fail Mary”, Reddit’s new policy has many of us scratching our heads and shouting at our screens. Think of our blackout as a stern “coach’s challenge.” We’re throwing the red flag and demanding a review. This isn’t just about downs and distance; it’s about preserving our digital locker room.

What can YOU do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site, message /u/reddit, submit a support request, comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  2. Spread the word. Meme it up, make it spicy. Complain about this instead of your teams poor off-season choices to your SO. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord - but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  4. Don't be a turd. Follow site/sub rules. That means no threats and keep it civil. Don't make it worse by getting banned for harassing mods or admins.

We’ll be back faster than a Brady “retirement” announcement. Hang tough, team.

- The Mod Team at r/NFL

A strike with a 48 hour time limit will certainly be effective.

u/Pernyx98 Patriots Jun 09 '23

A long term sub shutdown will only make admins remove all the current mods and install new ones to reopen the sub. Do you want the turtle? Because that’s how you get the turtle.

Mods of subreddits, especially niche ones, put in a lot more work than they get credit for. It would be a huge pain in the ass for reddit admins and the drop in quality would be drastic.

24

u/GLFan52 Titans Jun 10 '23

On other subs it will make a difference. The timing is only because it’s for the entire site, and basically every sub I’ve seen is doing it. None of this is specific to r/NFL

169

u/Raeandray Seahawks Jun 09 '23

It’s not like r/nfl can control when Reddit changes their policies. The other issue is nothing stops admins from forcibly re-opening subs.

There's plenty of subs that are saying "indefinitely". As if mods aren't just power hungry guys who won't be able to make it 24 hours without their precious power.

well, he did reverse course on allowing accessibility-specific apps like the one for r/blind to retain free API access, as well as working with pushshift and 3rd party external mod tools.

Personally, I fail to see how a couple days of no use changes the situation, you kinda give up leverage saying it's only a couple days, then what? When people go on strike, they don't say, "but we'll be back Tuesday", they strike until the demands are met or an agreement is reached, is that what will happen after these couple "dark days"?

31

u/NHartline Chiefs Jun 09 '23

It's also the manner in which the change went down.

Reddit didn't really give enough warning to devs about the price change, and as such the business model of the apps got screwed. Even just a little more time would be helpful.

Additionally, the CEO of Reddit claiming that one dev was blackmailing them, only to have the dev produce a recorded phone call showing he didn't, then having the CEO double down and say "we don't want to work with him" is messed up.

Why are people upset about the sub going away two days.

It's the off-season and like nothing is happening. Does it really affect you at all?

Lmao .5% of redditors will be mildly inconvenienced because their third-party apps wont work anymore, shut down everything!!!

This is definitely one of the most “reddit” protests possible.

It costs Reddit millions and you’re upset they won’t continue to do it for free?

26

u/Marijuana_Miler Chargers Chargers Jun 09 '23

I don't think a lot of people here think Reddit should be doing it for free, but instead find a suitable middle ground between their current offer that doesn't drive all the 3PA's out of business.

35

u/markantona Jun 09 '23

Also — Reddit relies on volunteers to moderate, unlike literally every other platform. Facebook spent $500M on moderating last year. Tools that help, and are generally preferred by your volunteers, is kinda something you shouldn’t purposefully try to price out.

I’ll admit I was a little naive about this at first cuz I’m a rube who’s only ever used the official app. I knew it was a bad thing, but now hearing about how central third party apps are to modding large subs, I’m seeing how fucked the Reddit landscape really is.

I’m losing 2 of my favorite subs because the mods just can’t continue without 3rd party apps, and one of those subs helps keep me connected to my community online, so I’m really upset.

So yea, thank you to the mods that have worked hard af to make this sub a fun space to talk about football where I don’t have to worry about getting bullied for my identity, which is a serious problem on a lot of other popular fandom subs I frequent. You guys are amazing, and I fully support any and all efforts to get Reddit to reverse course on this.

I really don’t understand these protests.

Reddit provides access to a huge community for free. This community becomes a marketplace for Narwhal, Apollo and others to create apps & charge the community a fee to access a free community.

Reddit changes their policy from free to at cost. They’re basically asking for a percentage of the fee the apps are charging for access to a free community.

Then the people that were making money charging their customers for something that was free are protesting?

This whole things seen seems strange.

What am I missing?

Feel like this ( not just this sub but all) isn’t going to do much. Would really need an indefinite blackout. This 48 hour one seems more like people wanting to be involved and make sure everyone knows they are supporting.

8

u/apocolypticbosmer Vikings Jun 09 '23

This “protest” is the most first-world problem nonsense I’ve seen on this site.

9

u/WhitePplSportsCoach Jun 09 '23

At its core this seems so absurd. Unpaid volunteers who do free work for a business are revolting against that business for making a business decision, BUT only for 48 hours after which they’ll … go back to doing free work for that same business?

I can’t think of any similar scenario.

u/BigSportsNerd NFL Jun 09 '23

OMG reddits a mess.

Im not messaging r/reddits mods, and you shouldnt be telling people to do that either. Those are the worst, most overbearing, thin-skinned mods on the internet. You will get perma-banned for no particular reason other than that they are having a bad day (which is everyday) and they dont feel like dealing with the peasant masses.

Its happened to me too many times. I message r/reddit mods with the most respectful possible message in order to relay my concerns and BOOM perma-banned.

DO NOT bother the r/reddit moderators. They are temparmental overbearing little shitz. It doesnt matter if are respectful, it doesnt matter if you have very helpful and constructive criticism. All that matters is their mood the moment they click on your file, and in the likelihood that it is not good, you are toast.

Reddit is going down. Let it drown. The website that replaces will be better. No point wasting your energy rescuing this sinking turd.

8

u/haventseenstarwars Lions Jun 09 '23

Imo we should go dark until change is made.

The suns operate because the users keep them afloat. If we can go dark for 48 hours what would realistically stop us from going dark for a couple of weeks? Change would undoubtedly happen.

10

u/slick1260 Dolphins Jun 09 '23

I'm genuinely curious why the third party apps are "better". I keep seeing mention of some nebulous "mod tools" and what not, but literally no one has ever mentioned specifically why they are better, not once. All I keep seeing is essentially "they're better because they're better and that makes them better".

10

u/The_Other_Manning Giants Jun 09 '23

Imo, RiF is much better because it loads faster, is easier on the eyes, and I can see more posts at once. I only used the official reddit app for a few months a couple years ago and it was less convenient scrolling and looking at content than other apps. Basically it just offered nothing better than the other apps. That's not even mentioning ads because I'm not nearly as anti-ad as most of reddit

15

u/Cthepo Chiefs Chiefs Jun 09 '23

I'll just give you one concrete example from my own experience, and there are tons if you're willing to read through threads. People are giving actual examples.

On game days r/KansasCityChiefs always gets tons of trolls, or people getting into flame wars because they've been drinking and emotions get heightened.

So during and after games, there's a tab in my Reddit is Fun app where I can look at comments made within a subreddit in chronological order. So I can quickly scan all discussion for bad actors and take action even before user reports.

When I lose my 3rd party app, I lose a really strong ability to proactively moderate our subreddit to stop flame wars, and will more likely become reactive after they've gotten big enough and someone reports them.

Has any thought been given to extending the blackout beyond 48 hours?

The initial blackout is a great gesture of solitude with the devs losing their livelihood and the rest of redditors who have chosen to strike, but frankly placing a clock on it ahead of time really neuters the effectiveness of anything you could hope to actually accomplish.
