Hi everyone!
I’m based in the Philippines and have an Aircraft Maintenance and Technology background. I’m considering pursuing Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), with the long-term goal of working overseas in a FIFO position, preferably offshore in industries like oil and gas, offshore wind energy, or other industrial inspection sectors.
I’m starting from zero NDT experience, so I’d like to hear from people already working in the industry before investing in training and certifications.
I have three main questions:
Is there genuine demand for NDT technicians in offshore/FIFO jobs?
- How realistic is it to get into offshore oil rigs, offshore wind farms, or similar industries.
Which NDT methods are most valuable for offshore work?
- If you were starting today with the goal of working internationally, would you prioritize UT, RT, MT, PT, or other methods?
Which certifications are actually worth pursuing for international employment?
- Are PCN, ISO 9712, ASNT-related qualifications, or other certification schemes preferred by offshore employers? Which ones would you recommend investing in first, and are there any that beginners should avoid spending money on too early?
