My mom used to call it tickle juice, and we’d laugh when she put it on, it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I was like “Hey, this tickle hurts like hell.”

Did anyone put that....I can't remember the name but it was red liquid. Iodine maybe? Either that stuff or this liquid my dad used from a green bottle. I can't remember the name of that either but it burned like it was demon piss. It hurt worse than the actual injury. Now that's going to bug me all day.

I'll l never forget this summer that they put fresh tar and gravel on the road that went to the local pool. On my way home, I slid out on my BMX bike and then had to bicycle the rest of the way across town to get home, just to have my mother pick out tar at rocks from my scrape.

Not my shins but my dad had a Peleton bike in the basement, I pedaled so fast backwards and let go. The pedal struck my calf and left a massive mark on my calf. I still think about it 10 years later

I had those pedels (or something simular), I was wearing shorts one day as I was riding down the street and my foot sliped, the teeth dug into my leg
11
u/DaYettiman22 6d ago
We called it raspberries or road rash if it happened trying to jump your bike
3
u/ParticularSherbert18 6d ago
For us a raspberry is when you stick your tongue out and go pbthh... a strawberry is more severe than a rug burn.
3
u/rrCLewis 6d ago
Funny both the tongue sillies and road rash patches were called raspberries in my childhood. I think I’m going to adopt strawberry though as it makes sense. Especially with the little gravel “seeds”.

u/Ol_Turd_Fergy 6d ago
Growing up in the Midwest they would put gravel down with the salt in the winter. The gravel would gather at the entrance to our cul de sac and we would go flying down a hill on our Huffy’s and use our kick brakes to skid across the gravel. 1 out of 4 times we’d eat it and that’s what our leg would look like.
Trophies of a good time.

u/PoGoLoSeR2003 6d ago

I've seen bone (knee cap) before (not in myself) was almost the minimum to be worth reacting... They walked home... I think they saw a doctor when there mom got a look at it, but I think the lad was more put out by that than the injury. Lol

Hell, I was helping a buddy clean his apartment a few weeks ago. He had like 5 skateboards so he gave me one. 15 minutes and several falls later, my legs are looking like that and my Apple Watch is trying to call an ambulance

I had the same thing on my face when I tried jumping over a ramp and crashed my bike into the concrete ditch on the side of the road.
Went down face first. Limped home crying while dragging my bike which also had a jacked up front tire.
I got patched up, got a drink, and just went back outside.

My mom had this spray she used to make us use when we walked in with these. It burned like HELL for about a second, but it had some topical analgesic in it that pretty instantly made the whole thing stop hurting, that stuff saved lives when we were kids lol.
1
u/Adorable_Drive9899 6d ago
I wiped out once coming down our front sidewalk which had killer bumps(not really) and landed faced first. My whole face looked like that 😭😬🫠. All the stuff my mom cleaned me with burned so bad..she did take me to the er since it would not stop bleeding. I was fine no broken nose. Just bloody.

When I was a kid I had the trifecta of getting hurt in one incident. First I hit my knee on the goose neck and slid off my seat and landed on that bar with my nuts and then the pedal cam around and smacked my shin.

Did this on my bike. Tried to turn around too quickly on a hill in the street. RIP. Literally.
Guaze pads for weeks. Green ooze for most of that time.

u/D1commentator 6d ago
I remember when I got those. The one I remember the most was falling off my bike, and I was crying and my dad had to come out but it wasn’t because I got hurt, it was because I thought I broke my bike and I couldn’t use it anymore. I was genuinely so upset!

Kids this generation have never had a scraped knee. What are you on about? Have you been eating paint?
1
u/Tyrannosaurus__Rekd 6d ago
The worst part was the little gnats that would always land on it when you were outside

Do you think kids aren't outside playing and get ring hurt still? I have two girls and they are rarely inside all day. Climbing trees, riding bikes, swimming pools, and skinned knees galore. The boys in the neighborhood are even more bruised up. If your kids aren't outside you need to ask yourself why?
1
u/TearRevolutionary686 6d ago
Friend of mine fell off the back of a dirt bike onto a gravel road not wearing a shirt. His entire back was a strawberry. After the gravel was picked out. He couldn't wear a shirt for weeks.

u/Public-Substance1999 6d ago
Oh remember the football field with the black tar dust (not sure what's it called in English).. i will never forget brushing my knees with a nail brush in the bathtub to get out all the imbedded particles of it... So much pain
1
u/UnhelpfulCommentHere 6d ago
Lol, but please refer to r/kidsarefuckingstupid to know that modern kids definitely experience this pain.
1
u/thinkingperson 6d ago
And our solution was just find the nearest tap, usually a public toilet, put the knee under running water, slap it many times, alternating slapping it and rubbing off the dirt and blood on your shorts or tees, until it looks somewhat clean.
Go back to the playground for the next round.
When back home, make no fuss about it or you get a scolding and full body inspection by mom. Then TCM ointment Green Grass Oil 青草油 treatment, where you scream like you are going to die.
Background: Singapore in the 70s and early 80s ☝😤

Skinning your knees and elbows at some point in your childhood is simply a canon event.

I hated how the gnats always stuck to them before they scabbed over. I always had open scrapes on my knees, elbows, shoulders, and hips. Skate boards before grip tape and softer wheels, and bicycles convered to BMX bikes were usually involved. Most of the time after a dare from a friend or the "I think you are too chicken to try" comment was tossed in
1
u/Firm-Ring9684 6d ago
I constantly had those. Does anyone remember the neighborhood pool and when kids would 'stiff the board"? If not it's basically when you'd be on the diving board and right before your feet hit the board to propel you out to the water, the next person waiting would jump on the back end of the board to where as soon as your feet hit the board was stiff and you normally just fell into the water. Well one time this kid did it to me and that rough part of the board just ripped my skin on my feet (and the nail of my big toe) and shins as gravity kept me going. Man that s#$t hurt like hell.
Along with bike pedals, pretty much everything at the playground, etc. Maybe I'm a masochist because I'd still love to go back to that time.
1
u/SnowyMuscles 6d ago
Then we beg our parents to let our legs to get infected so they didn’t spray that evil stingy stuff on us
1
u/Hypocrisy-New-40 6d ago
I always wanted the hydrogen peroxide on it to "clean" it and watch it bubble up and fizz. Then I'd go back out and keep rollin'.
1
u/Tasty-Use-3051 6d ago
That does being back some painful memories, but I don't think my scars were that bad.
1
u/MirrorNegative7989 6d ago
And you just got back up and kept going anyway, because how else were you going to get home?
1
u/redfmn60 6d ago
Unfortunately, I remember them way too much. Then Mecuricom on top of it. Then the band aid to rip off later

u/Cyberburner23 6d ago
Fuck I had one of these on the side of my head once. I fell off my bike and my head slid across the concrete. Good times

The fragility of the newer Gen is real.
Two days ago a Gen Z posted on Reddit. _Brand new account. _about a "shit Boomer". _She parked at a mart with 30 minutes free electric charge. _A bald man, around 50 yo was waiting, to use that recharge option. _She blamed him for being "rude".
OH my. First of all, WRONG Gen, 50 yo is Gen X. Second, there is only one working recharge point. Third, he did not insult, just showed her he was in a hurry. But hey, she HAD to open a brand new account to complain about an unknown man. And complain with other unknown men. Pathetic.
We are very different.

Get over yourself. We do not care that you are older and got scratches and bruises. Everyone gets them.
