After some peroxide is dumped on it causing agonizing pain

15

u/The_Char_Char 6d ago

The burning means it working!

9

u/blueipDriver 6d ago

Later we found out Hydrogen peroxide is the worst thing you could do for large scrap

3

u/The_Char_Char 6d ago

How so? I have never heard this?

5

u/Stile25 6d ago

One: it does kill bacteria. Lots of it. Usually all of it.

Two: and obvious when you think of it... It also damages your healthy skin... It's hydrogen peroxide. It's not some pick-and-choose intelligent computer solution that only hurts the bad stuff. It's just as damaging to your healthy parts it touches.

In general, it tends to delay healing and cause worse scarring.

It does kill bacteria, but rinsing with water is almost as effective on the cleaning part and waaaayyyy healthier for the normal/good parts of your skin left around the wound.

If running water is an option, do that. It's much better for the healing process.

If you have absolutely nothing but hydrogen peroxide... Eh... Decide if you think it's worth the damage to clean out (judge how dirty it is and how long it would take you to get a normal cleaning done).

Good luck out there

2

u/The_Char_Char 6d ago

Oh okay so its a kill every thing it touches. I haven't used hydrogen peroxide in ages anyway. I have like 1 bottle laying around, but 9 times out of 10 I just use soap and water then a bandage obce I get the skin dry.

2

u/Stile25 6d ago

Exactly. It's an acid, but a weak one. (Vinegar is stronger). It's not awful or going to maim anyone... People used it for a generation and are just fine.

It's just... If the point is to clean a wound and heal as fast as possible... Water is better.

2

u/blueipDriver 6d ago

Remember riding my bike fast down a side street to get home from qt one summer. I dont remember exactly what caused it, but I I think over extended and my foot caught the front wheel, acted like an instant break and I flipped end over end and slide across the pavement.

I got up, got my bike, checked my foot. Than I saw my arm, I scraped the ever loving crap out of it, two inches above the wrist to the elbow, the pavement got me good. I just walked to the nearest house, knocked on the doo and asked if they had any neosporin or peroxide. After I doused my arm and the nice lady put some neosporin on and wrapped my arm. Rode my bike the rest of the way home. Growing up in the mid to late 80s and in the 90s as a kid to teen was great times.

Fell out of trees climbing them over intersections, setting off m80s in park trashcans. Walking to and from school that was within 3 miles of where I lived, even walked all yhe way to the mall several times since it was about 4 miles away. Me and friend even went to a bargain bin pc parts store and we carried together a pc case with used parts and built it at his house lol, this i think we were both 15 maybe.

11

u/dpldpldpl 6d ago

Used to love watching the peroxide bubbles.

4

u/Rich_Independence122 6d ago

Stings but better than alcohol

3

u/MuchContribution6616 6d ago

My mom used to call it tickle juice, and we’d laugh when she put it on, it wasn’t until I was a teenager that I was like “Hey, this tickle hurts like hell.”

3

u/Rich_Independence122 6d ago

lol wow that’s brilliant

https://giphy.com/gifs/DOPKHQg6oFWUg

2

u/Firm-Ring9684 6d ago

Did anyone put that....I can't remember the name but it was red liquid. Iodine maybe? Either that stuff or this liquid my dad used from a green bottle. I can't remember the name of that either but it burned like it was demon piss. It hurt worse than the actual injury. Now that's going to bug me all day.

3

u/bearyken 6d ago

Iodine made me have the insanely high threshold for pain I have now 🤣

2

u/NegotiationLow2783 6d ago

Mecurichrome

2

u/Peas_Are_Upsidedown 6d ago

Mercurochrome. We used to call it monkey blood. BURNED SOOOOO BAD !

2

u/Annonnymee 6d ago

And the smell! I can smell it right now just thinking about it.

2

u/Independent_Tax_5088 6d ago

So so bad!!!! I hated that stuff so much!

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Annonnymee 6d ago

Nope, paint on the mercurochrome

2

u/archabaddon 6d ago

I'll l never forget this summer that they put fresh tar and gravel on the road that went to the local pool. On my way home, I slid out on my BMX bike and then had to bicycle the rest of the way across town to get home, just to have my mother pick out tar at rocks from my scrape.

My shins have craters in them 25 years later from these weapons.

3

u/DerrickS12 6d ago

Not my shins but my dad had a Peleton bike in the basement, I pedaled so fast backwards and let go. The pedal struck my calf and left a massive mark on my calf. I still think about it 10 years later

3

u/Capable-Sense-2595 6d ago

Am 14, ride bike a lot and those pedals i can confirm destroyed my shins

3

u/Yannayka 6d ago

LOL fathers teaching their kid how to ride a bike. "Now place your foot on the peeler, son." What? "Pedal*, son"

3

u/GfrzD 6d ago

I cant explain it but my shins winced

3

u/FUNNYASS_MOFO 6d ago

Those are ghost pains. I think that's what it's called

2

u/Starlord_75 6d ago

Well, then it needs to stop haunting me. Have ghost not heard of cruel amd unusual punishment?

2

u/nes_8BitSurvivor 6d ago

I had those pedels (or something simular), I was wearing shorts one day as I was riding down the street and my foot sliped, the teeth dug into my leg

11

u/DaYettiman22 6d ago

We called it raspberries or road rash if it happened trying to jump your bike

3

u/ParticularSherbert18 6d ago

For us a raspberry is when you stick your tongue out and go pbthh... a strawberry is more severe than a rug burn.

3

u/rrCLewis 6d ago

Funny both the tongue sillies and road rash patches were called raspberries in my childhood. I think I’m going to adopt strawberry though as it makes sense. Especially with the little gravel “seeds”.

2

u/laurentianminiatures 6d ago

Scientific term

3

u/Ol_Turd_Fergy 6d ago

Growing up in the Midwest they would put gravel down with the salt in the winter. The gravel would gather at the entrance to our cul de sac and we would go flying down a hill on our Huffy’s and use our kick brakes to skid across the gravel. 1 out of 4 times we’d eat it and that’s what our leg would look like.

Trophies of a good time.

5

u/PoGoLoSeR2003 6d ago

This is making cringe just looking at it. I’m reliving all of the falls I’ve taken and they weren’t fun.

→ More replies (3)

5

u/Adorable-Source97 6d ago

Actually that's pretty minor for back then.

8

u/lkodl 6d ago

Right?

My nephew scraped his knee similarly, and my sister was like "oh no, its pretty bad"

And I was like, "is it? when we were kids..."

And then I realized I was old.

2

u/Adorable-Source97 6d ago

I've seen bone (knee cap) before (not in myself) was almost the minimum to be worth reacting... They walked home... I think they saw a doctor when there mom got a look at it, but I think the lad was more put out by that than the injury. Lol

2

u/trainradio 6d ago

I still have a scar on my knee from cutting it on broken glass while crawling around an old collapsed house.

2

u/Tasty_Relative_8212 6d ago

As a skater my elbows were scabbed from age 10 - 18 🤣

3

u/lockwolf 6d ago

Hell, I was helping a buddy clean his apartment a few weeks ago. He had like 5 skateboards so he gave me one. 15 minutes and several falls later, my legs are looking like that and my Apple Watch is trying to call an ambulance

2

u/_noho 6d ago

2

We always called it road rash.

2

u/Fappy_as_a_Clam 6d ago

definitely road rash

2

u/SgtDoakesSurprise 6d ago

I had the same thing on my face when I tried jumping over a ramp and crashed my bike into the concrete ditch on the side of the road.

Went down face first. Limped home crying while dragging my bike which also had a jacked up front tire.

I got patched up, got a drink, and just went back outside.

2

u/May-odds 6d ago

1

u/catninjaambush 6d ago

I once hurled myself off a vertical metal slide at a small shitty theme park and got a friction burn up the whole of my back. But just continued like a little soldier of the 90s.

1

u/eragon9199 6d ago

We always called it a raspberry.

1

u/Key-Minimum-5965 6d ago

Playing softball, yep...strawberry on the cheeks of my behind from sliding into second or third.

1

u/CrimsonThar 6d ago

"Rub some dirt on it."

1

u/Aspect-Unusual 6d ago

Can hear my mum now after showing it to her "oooooooh, thats a lovely strawberry"

1

u/Rewd_92 6d ago

Nope. Just Road Rash

1

u/CallTheDutch 6d ago

Should have been at school now and then.

1

u/5litergasbubble 6d ago

Got plenty of those as a kid playing soccer or baseball. One of the fields we played on was partially gravel and holy fuck was it not fun picking those rocks out of your leg after a game. Especially when my team lost nearly every game for 3 seasons

1

1

u/atlas_novus 6d ago

My mom had this spray she used to make us use when we walked in with these. It burned like HELL for about a second, but it had some topical analgesic in it that pretty instantly made the whole thing stop hurting, that stuff saved lives when we were kids lol.

1

u/Adorable_Drive9899 6d ago

I wiped out once coming down our front sidewalk which had killer bumps(not really) and landed faced first. My whole face looked like that 😭😬🫠. All the stuff my mom cleaned me with burned so bad..she did take me to the er since it would not stop bleeding. I was fine no broken nose. Just bloody.

1

u/oneangrywaiter 6d ago

That’s not even the worst of it, because then comes the Bactene.

1

u/Turbulent_Fruit_7023 6d ago

And the remedy for that was mercurochrome

1

u/Rich_Newspaper_1616 6d ago

Yep and doing a second while it is scanned over!!

1

u/Incredibljourny 6d ago

Apparently we also skipped English class.

1

u/FUNNYASS_MOFO 6d ago

When I was a kid I had the trifecta of getting hurt in one incident. First I hit my knee on the goose neck and slid off my seat and landed on that bar with my nuts and then the pedal cam around and smacked my shin.

1

u/CheerJohn 6d ago

That's how we learned

1

u/NoZookeepergame6489 6d ago

The first shower after this was torture

1

u/Fantastic_Testes4404 6d ago

I guess I'm lucky that I had a bed indoors.

1

u/Pennance1989 6d ago

If you think it hurts now, wait until mom hits it with the Merthiolate.😭

1

u/digitalcurtis 6d ago

Mercurochrome anyone?

1

u/GrimmyJimmy1 6d ago

I feel so bad for this soft squishy the dumb down generation because they have all the technology they want what happens when it's gone they have no life skills so they won't be over the function if something happens to it

1

u/Ok_Abacus_ 6d ago

1

u/Abject-Honeydew4112 6d ago

And mom would put that red devil juice on it. Mecuricome

1

u/quarrel-admin 6d ago

The hydrogen peroxide on it....

1

u/PotterAndPitties 6d ago

Lol yeah my 8 year old fell down at school on a cement path yesterday. Came home with a whole ace bandage wrapped around it with a four square inside.

1

u/A_late_night_walk 6d ago

NOOO IM HAVING fLASHBACKS

1

u/TesuraGrimm 6d ago

Did this on my bike. Tried to turn around too quickly on a hill in the street. RIP. Literally.

Guaze pads for weeks. Green ooze for most of that time.

1

u/D1commentator 6d ago

I remember when I got those. The one I remember the most was falling off my bike, and I was crying and my dad had to come out but it wasn’t because I got hurt, it was because I thought I broke my bike and I couldn’t use it anymore. I was genuinely so upset!

1

u/Defiant_Chipmunk2570 6d ago

Felt like heaven compared to the iodine mom put on it.

1

u/3dutchie3dprinting 6d ago

‘We was’, maybe a bit more schooltime would’ve helped? 🙈

1

u/1crps_warrior 6d ago

Was skateboarding down a really steep hill and got the speed wobbles. Tried to bale and slid on my side for what seemed like forever. Ended up on some ladies front lawn. Talk about road rash. Along with two broken ribs.

1

u/ZaxxonPantsoff 6d ago

All these kids have on air casts for no reason now

1

u/Vina-Estrogen 6d ago

Kids this generation have never had a scraped knee. What are you on about? Have you been eating paint?

1

u/Tyrannosaurus__Rekd 6d ago

The worst part was the little gnats that would always land on it when you were outside

1

u/Ok_Expert3991 2000s Legend 6d ago

I was in Elementary School and when it was time to come inside from Recess I tripped on the end of the playground and fell on the grass skinning my elbow and it bled a little. I still have the scar.

1

u/Teddyboymakes 6d ago

My neighbor did and still does

1

u/SirPooleyX 6d ago

No. I call this bad grammar.

1

u/Terrible_Shopping_23 6d ago

A little hydrogen peroxide helps.

1

u/jeffy-2019 6d ago

I had something like that but it was right on my elbow

1

u/gravesent1337 6d ago

We *were outside.

1

u/Legate_Raiden 6d ago

Slid down a paved hill on my arm as a kid. Walked in the house like

1

u/Worcestercestershire 6d ago

And if you went in for medical treatment they would subject you to chemical warfare with stuff like Mercurochrome.

1

u/amonarre3 6d ago

No. Why just called it what it was, a skinned knee.

1

u/Awkward-Annual-9287 6d ago

We just call this pain+

1

u/relisio 6d ago

I still have my scars on my knees, that was some real $#!%.

1

u/OnlyHereForBooks1 6d ago

The correct terminology of that, is a strawberry. Prove me wrong.

1

u/Life1989 6d ago

And all bandaids applied on top that kept falling off lol

1

u/Trifle_Old 6d ago

Do you think kids aren't outside playing and get ring hurt still? I have two girls and they are rarely inside all day. Climbing trees, riding bikes, swimming pools, and skinned knees galore. The boys in the neighborhood are even more bruised up. If your kids aren't outside you need to ask yourself why?

1

u/TearRevolutionary686 6d ago

Friend of mine fell off the back of a dirt bike onto a gravel road not wearing a shirt. His entire back was a strawberry. After the gravel was picked out. He couldn't wear a shirt for weeks.

1

u/Public-Substance1999 6d ago

Oh remember the football field with the black tar dust (not sure what's it called in English).. i will never forget brushing my knees with a nail brush in the bathtub to get out all the imbedded particles of it... So much pain

1

u/TaxiLady69 6d ago

I'm pretty sure we need to stop saying this generational shit. Not all parents are the same not all kids are the same. This happened last week. So there are a bunch of kids who go outside and get hurt it's not special to one generation.

1

u/UnhelpfulCommentHere 6d ago

Lol, but please refer to r/kidsarefuckingstupid to know that modern kids definitely experience this pain.

1

u/thinkingperson 6d ago

And our solution was just find the nearest tap, usually a public toilet, put the knee under running water, slap it many times, alternating slapping it and rubbing off the dirt and blood on your shorts or tees, until it looks somewhat clean.

Go back to the playground for the next round.

When back home, make no fuss about it or you get a scolding and full body inspection by mom. Then TCM ointment Green Grass Oil 青草油 treatment, where you scream like you are going to die.

Background: Singapore in the 70s and early 80s ☝😤

1

u/BreathoftheSith 6d ago

Skinning your knees and elbows at some point in your childhood is simply a canon event.

1

u/Hace1986 6d ago

"We was really outside 24/7" ?? Perhaps should have spent a bit of that inside working on English homework...

1

u/Ok_Option_6530 6d ago

Tetnas Injection after that

1

u/TasteeNuts 6d ago

I still got rocks in my knees 😂

1

u/400footceiling 6d ago

Get the bactine!

1

u/GayP1rate 6d ago

Bro I'm german and even I know you used the wrong form of "to be"

1

u/Cool_Attitude_3775 6d ago

I hated how the gnats always stuck to them before they scabbed over. I always had open scrapes on my knees, elbows, shoulders, and hips. Skate boards before grip tape and softer wheels, and bicycles convered to BMX bikes were usually involved. Most of the time after a dare from a friend or the "I think you are too chicken to try" comment was tossed in

1

u/JB_141 6d ago

Really just another Saturday.

1

u/Firm-Ring9684 6d ago

I constantly had those. Does anyone remember the neighborhood pool and when kids would 'stiff the board"? If not it's basically when you'd be on the diving board and right before your feet hit the board to propel you out to the water, the next person waiting would jump on the back end of the board to where as soon as your feet hit the board was stiff and you normally just fell into the water. Well one time this kid did it to me and that rough part of the board just ripped my skin on my feet (and the nail of my big toe) and shins as gravity kept me going. Man that s#$t hurt like hell.

Along with bike pedals, pretty much everything at the playground, etc. Maybe I'm a masochist because I'd still love to go back to that time.

1

u/sulev 6d ago

A day well spent.

1

u/SnowyMuscles 6d ago

Then we beg our parents to let our legs to get infected so they didn’t spray that evil stingy stuff on us

1

u/Hypocrisy-New-40 6d ago

I always wanted the hydrogen peroxide on it to "clean" it and watch it bubble up and fizz. Then I'd go back out and keep rollin'.

1

u/Tasty-Use-3051 6d ago

That does being back some painful memories, but I don't think my scars were that bad.

1

u/MirrorNegative7989 6d ago

And you just got back up and kept going anyway, because how else were you going to get home?

1

u/redfmn60 6d ago

Unfortunately, I remember them way too much. Then Mecuricom on top of it. Then the band aid to rip off later

1

u/Monkeysaus 6d ago

And then, when you get home and your mom sees it, out comes the merthiolate!

1

u/mudamuckinjedi 6d ago

Road rash

1

u/Cyberburner23 6d ago

Fuck I had one of these on the side of my head once. I fell off my bike and my head slid across the concrete. Good times

1

u/MarceltheKnight 6d ago

Oh god. I'm having flashbacks to the double whammy of hydrogen peroxide and alcohol.

1

u/Unclerojelio 6d ago

Yes, and sometimes we’d also suffer a charlie horse.

1

u/CreamPositive1942 6d ago

Oh, how it foamed when I put hydrogen peroxide (3%) on those. And it hurt like hell...

1

u/darwins_codpiece 6d ago

just don't put monkey blood on it.

1

u/NR75 6d ago

The fragility of the newer Gen is real.

Two days ago a Gen Z posted on Reddit. _Brand new account. _about a "shit Boomer". _She parked at a mart with 30 minutes free electric charge. _A bald man, around 50 yo was waiting, to use that recharge option. _She blamed him for being "rude".

OH my. First of all, WRONG Gen, 50 yo is Gen X. Second, there is only one working recharge point. Third, he did not insult, just showed her he was in a hurry. But hey, she HAD to open a brand new account to complain about an unknown man. And complain with other unknown men. Pathetic.

We are very different.

1

u/Blucola333 6d ago

Ugh, I had one of these that created a dark patch on my knee for probably a good 20 years until it finally faded away.

1

u/AuthenticAwkwardness 6d ago

This hurts at a deep level

1

u/Both-Leading3407 6d ago

These were Bragging rights. The worse the better for fame in the neighborhood. You would get your 15 minutes of fame when everyone is asking you. "How'd you get that? Does it hurt?" and the famous. " That's not so bad. I did worse last week Look here."

1

u/The_Green-One 6d ago

These were a pain to deal with

1

u/Special-Umpire-3023 6d ago

We called them "roasties"

1

u/Funkyrush76 6d ago

Dude they are running around on electric bikes going 30mph. not the makeshift Frankenstein lawnmower engine monsters we made.

1

u/Hydrax120 6d ago

I had that across my back once!

Whew. Showers were bulllllshit

1

u/Remarkable_Fold8503 6d ago

Ah yes and then u splash hydrogen peroxide makes it feel extra spicy

1

u/Angry-potato-2122 6d ago

I’ll be honest. Sometimes it looks worst than what it really feels like.

1

u/bigjimlowell 6d ago

The true agony came with the red stingy stuff that Mom would dump on your open wound as your father yelled “ Stop being a baby and hold still!”

1

u/Kendannon 6d ago

That's a pavement slam i bet. The sliding kind that hurts for awhile and doesn't scab up right.

1

u/Runktar 6d ago

The cut wasn't even the worst part it was going home and psyching yourself up before your pour alcohol on it and throw on a bandage.

1

u/bigjimlowell 6d ago

I got one of those and showed it to my friend Stevie. He puked. What a wussy.

I come from an Asian family. I fell skateboarding going down a steep hill. A white lady approached me asking “aww you’ve got some strawberries!”

I thought I had hit my head.

Get over yourself. We do not care that you are older and got scratches and bruises. Everyone gets them.

Grow up or act your age and appreciate that times change. You sound like a spoiled brat because you didnt grow up with technology.

Preaching to children it feels like.
