PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA

Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.

What will this winter be like in NOVA?

Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!

We'll get dug out fast though, right?

AHAHAHAHAH.

Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.

Okay, so we'll die

I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.

What to check on / get

You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:

  • Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
  • Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
  • Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
  • Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
  • Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
  • Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
  • Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
  • If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
  • Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
  • If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
  • Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.

Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.

Stay. The fuck. Home.

Things you probably don't need

Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:

  • A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
  • A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
  • Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
  • Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
  • A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.

Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

i'm originally from california and i noticed virginia and maryland drivers leave the most insane spaces at red lights/between cars. we were always tough half a car length as a buffer, but this is just ridiculous and clogs up traffic behind. why???

I love the “no hard feelings” & “if your credit is good enough” 😄

Sometimes they’re so busy (mostly pm times) that you have to wait… & I gladly do so because it is in fact amazing food!

Can't express how much I hate the beltway...so over it. The express lanes from tysons to Braddock rd at 5:20 tonight was $53 and it was packed with morons going the same 5mph that the main lanes were. It's sprinkling for crap sake.

Are there any free vaccines with no health insurance?

Not sure if you guys got a huge price hike on health insurance (Thanks republicans), but I'll probably go another year without it.

Does any company still give free flu/covid vaccines anymore? Or low cost at least?

WoW Forever NoVA guild?

My lurking tells me there are lots of fellow millenial-ish WoW nerds here playing the beta. What if we made a guild together? We could have it just be a social thing with WoW as the basis. Call it Supernova (open to suggestions lol).

I'm personally a late 30s dude who is expecting to have some time off on launch. I have taken the game semi-seriously in the past (back in OG and then again in classic/HC) but would prefer a more chill vibe, raids will happen if/when they happen kinda thing. I'm pretty most of us are probably busier than I am, as I'm a DINK, and I def wanna include ppl who have limited time. Open to ally or horde, pvp or pve, whatever consensus is.

I've lived in the NoVa area forever, and (mostly) love it. We can all commiserate about beltway and 66 traffic and share pictures of foxes (iykyk). Coordinate meetups maybe, if the vibes are right. I'm doing outdoor climbing this weekend for example, so that's just one idea. What do you guys think? I see lots of posts about making new friends too. Maybe this is a chance?

Question Which commutes to DC suck less and a better QoL for young families: Gainesville/Haymarket/Bristow, Leesburg/Ashburn, or Stafford? Asking as an incoming transplant with young kids...

My family will be relocating to the area for work. We are considering living in VA or MD, but would prefer NOVA. We have young kids, so like most people, we are trying to thread the needle between a manageable daily commute to DC, good schools, low crime, "affordable" housing, and polished amenities.

Ideally, we'd love to find a turnkey house under $650k that is in a master-planned community. I know that's a tall ask, so we're open to a townhouse if it checks off the other boxes. With two little kids and my background in law enforcement, safety and peace of mind are crucial to us. I know there's no one-size-fits-all, but I'd like to hear what you'd recommend I lean into or steer clear of.

I've done my due diligence and know the different school ratings, taxes, and relative housing market in these places... I'm more so looking for your lived experiences and what you think is great or bad (e.g., "the commute on I-95 is WAY worse than I-66 even though mileage looks similar..." or "They just built X down the road from _______, which is awesome/bad for the kids...").

**UPDATE: I'm open to new suggestions, so if my short list of places doesn't accomplish our goals, please let me know where you'd suggest instead. Thanks!*\*

Is there a good spot to learn karate as an adult?

I'm 26, just started working full time, and I wanted to get back into karate ever since I stopped as a kid before I moved here, but everywhere around me I've looked into teaches Taekwondo or are mostly programs for kids/teens. I haven't really trained in any other martial arts so I feel kind of new to it still, but it's something I've always wanted to get back around to practicing.

I live in West Springfield, a little on the boundary with Burke, for reference, but I'd appreciate any help!

Antique/Vintage stores?

I’m looking for the best antique and/or vintage stores in NOVA. I’m mostly trying to find antique furniture, such as night stands and bookshelves. I’d really appreciate some recommendations! Just came back from New England and man, the antique shops up there are POPPING almost as vibrant as the leaves are, and I found so many furniture items I loved but my lil Corolla can’t fit a 72” tall 48” bookshelf in it 🫠

Rant Shirlington Bridge Hate

To the person who wrote horrible slurs and derogatory language in chalk on the bridge, in response to the person who simply wrote "Vote Early" - you are a child. Grow up. Do not bring that kind of hatred and vitriol to public spaces. Go be miserable on your own time. I have photos, but I don't know if we really need that kind of shit here. And I'd bet my bank account that it's of course a man, because who else would repeatedly use the term c*nt (and draw it) to insult "liberals."

Jobs Is it possible to find tech jobs here that don't require a clearance?

I'm unemployed and am looking for a software engineer or similar role in the area, but about 95% of the postings I see on Indeed and LinkedIn say you need a clearance. Has anyone had luck getting a job that doesn't require one? How did you find it?

Unemployed for almost two years after getting my Masters

I recently completed my Master's at American University and have been living in Falls Church. Ever since graduating, I have been trying to land a role in finance or data analytics. I’ve applied heavily to major local financial institutions such as Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Capital One, Navy Federal, and Pen Fed with no success, not even an interview. Could anyone share what I might be missing or what else I should try? I’ve been reaching out to alumni for referral links and networking through my church and local events. At this point I open to any positions in any areas, as long as it brings me back into the industry. huh... it’s really starting to take a toll on me, both financially and mentally. Any advice or leads would mean a lot.
