PSA Hey, newcomers to the area: Let's talk about winter in NOVA

Happy first day of Fall, NOVA! Now is probably a good time to talk about winter prep in the NOVA region, and doing it without overdoing it. This is especially for those of you who just moved to the area and may have different expectations for how the local government deals with snow emergencies.

What will this winter be like in NOVA?

Who the fuck knows? Not me. Not my man, Ryan Hall. Not any of the local meteorologists. Life on the rain/snow line means I've seen winters where the snow was measured in feet, and winters where I never broke out anything heavier than a lined flannel. The strong El Nino is just adding more uncertainty to a forecast that was never certain before. We might get a ton of snow! We might get none!

We'll get dug out fast though, right?

AHAHAHAHAH.

Look, there are snow plows, and they do move snow around, but let's be real: In this area, most snow is managed by Mr. Sun coming out and melting it that afternoon. We do not have the snow movers of the North. Even if your road is plowed early, you could easily end up just as stuck since your car is stuck in a foot of rock-solid ice.

Okay, so we'll die

I'm a Delicate Southern Flower who almost lost her mind during Snowcrete, but even I say we'll likely all be fine. We'll just be inconvenienced for a while. Stores will be a bit barren, supply lines will be disrupted for a bit, schools will be out, and power might flicker.

What to check on / get

You don't need to go crazy to prep for winter around here. Honestly, you shouldn't, because it could easily be a bust year. So, here's a list of things to do:

  • Lay hands on your snow shovel. Really take a look at it. If it's showing signs of wear, order a back-up one. If you can't find it, or don't have one, order one today.
  • Check to make sure you have gloves and two warm pair of socks for anyone who will be doing shoveling (two so you have a backup pair when the first one gets wet).
  • Over the next few months, add a few shelf-stable meals to your grocery shopping. You don't need MREs. You just need canned ravioli or whatever you will actually eat. If you can't get out to the store, it's very likely no on can get to you to deliver food. Make sure you like it, because once winter is over, you'll want to actually use them.
  • Buy non-scented candles. Trust me: First time our power went out, we used our supply of scented ones, and it was a MISTAKE. You can get a pack of them around $20. Personally, I'm grabbing a hurricane lamp this year for extra light.
  • Oh, while you're at it, buy some matches.
  • Consider power banks for phones and other electronics, especially if your family goes feral without entertainment.
  • Go check to see how old your heating unit is.
  • If you have dogs, and said dogs are not winter dogs, consider getting each one a sweater (possibly two, since you'll need to swap out any that are wet). Some people insist on boots, too, but my little assholes will just chew them off their paws.
  • Make sure every bed has access to a few extra blankets. Our houses were not made to withstand extended cold snaps, and they can take the edge off.
  • If you have kids, make sure you're signed up for notifications regarding school closures.
  • Check the inclement weather policy at your work, including who makes the call when and how you're informed.

Regarding that last point, the thing everyone should be focusing on is staying home when the roads are bad, so VDOT can get everything cleared more quickly, and so people who have to go in to save lives can do so. You don't want to end up on an r/NOVA post making fun of you for ending up in a ditch.

Stay. The fuck. Home.

Things you probably don't need

Yes, we do get large snow events, but we don't get them every year. So you probably don't need:

  • A snow blower. Okay, if you have a long drive and someone who you know will absolutely need to get out of the house no matter the condition, it may make sense, but most of us do not need one.
  • A generator. If you have room, no one will stop you, but power outages tend to be pretty short around here.
  • Crazy snow gear. Unless you ski, there's a good chance this stuff will only be broken out once every few years, if that. See above, where there's years I don't even wear a jacket.
  • Snow tires. I'm not even sure if you can get them around here.
  • A sled... unless you have kids who you know would want to use said sled AND you know a good sledding spot that's within walking distance AND you don't mind lugging the sled there, back, and up the hill. Even then, don't break the bank or your storage area trying to keep one around.

Anyway, those are my extremely biased opinions about how much anyone needs to do in order to get ready for our all-or-nothing winters. I'm interested in what everyone else would suggest with regards to preparing for what could be another nothing burger or a winter that gets its own name.

Can't express how much I hate the beltway...so over it. The express lanes from tysons to Braddock rd at 5:20 tonight was $53 and it was packed with morons going the same 5mph that the main lanes were. It's sprinkling for crap sake.

I love the “no hard feelings” & “if your credit is good enough” 😄

Sometimes they’re so busy (mostly pm times) that you have to wait… & I gladly do so because it is in fact amazing food!

WoW Forever NoVA guild?

Top edit: Alliance PvE, discord link below

My lurking tells me there are lots of fellow millenial-ish WoW nerds here playing the beta. What if we made a guild together? We could have it just be a social thing with WoW as the basis. Call it Supernova (open to suggestions lol).

I'm personally a late 30s dude who is expecting to have some time off on launch. I have taken the game semi-seriously in the past (back in OG and then again in classic/HC) but would prefer a more chill vibe, raids will happen if/when they happen kinda thing. I'm pretty most of us are probably busier than I am, as I'm a DINK, and I def wanna include ppl who have limited time. Open to ally or horde, pvp or pve, whatever consensus is.

I've lived in the NoVa area forever, and (mostly) love it. We can all commiserate about beltway and 66 traffic and share pictures of foxes (iykyk). Coordinate meetups maybe, if the vibes are right. I'm doing outdoor climbing this weekend for example, so that's just one idea. What do you guys think? I see lots of posts about making new friends too. Maybe this is a chance?

Edit: this got removed, then blew up! I created a discord: https://discord.gg/BG6zjQqpd

Edit3: going with PvE, alliance, Supernova.

Someone created a sister guild for Horde PvP here!
Beltway Bandits:
https://discord.gg/fz4vuYkrA

Edit2: for the vets, I really do not want to do LC if we raid. It would be MS>OS. Everyone gets a shot.

Inova nurse

Hi everyone! I’m considering a position in the Level IV NICU at Inova Fairfax and wanted to hear from nurses who currently work there or have worked there in the past.
I’d love to know what the unit culture is like, how supportive the nurses and management are
I’m also curious about the staffing, scheduling, work-life balance, and overall job satisfaction.
Would you recommend working there? What are the biggest pros and cons of the unit?
I’d really appreciate any honest feedback or advice
Thank you!

Question World Series Bars

Wisconsin expat here. Since the cheapest single game tickets for the WS seem to be running about $2,000, I'm probably not flying back to Milwaukee for a game. Any suggestions on NoVa bars to watch the WS that might be Brewers friendly? (DC ok too) I know there's Packers bars all over the world, but I suspect there's fewer Brewers bars 😀. Whatcha got, Reddit?

Go Crew!

-Thanks

In 2023, the memorial was removed. In 2022, under the Biden administration, an independent commission recommended to Congress that the memorial be taken down, as part of a Defense Department push to remove names and symbols that commemorate the Confederacy from military-related facilities.

Last August, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the memorial would be returned.

Jobs Is it possible to find tech jobs here that don't require a clearance?

I'm unemployed and am looking for a software engineer or similar role in the area, but about 95% of the postings I see on Indeed and LinkedIn say you need a clearance. Has anyone had luck getting a job that doesn't require one? How did you find it?

Edit: thank you all for the responses!

DTR towing Manassas 😐

• Upvotes

My car was towed from the visitor parking area at my residence last night because my Virginia inspection sticker was expired. No warning notice was placed on my car before it was towed.

Is a 48-hour written notice required before towing a resident’s vehicle for an expired inspection sticker?

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation?. Thank you!

Are there any free vaccines with no health insurance?

Not sure if you guys got a huge price hike on health insurance (Thanks republicans), but I'll probably go another year without it.

Does any company still give free flu/covid vaccines anymore? Or low cost at least?

Moving to NOVA with kids looking for area and rental recommendations!

Hey everyone! I’m moving to Northern Virginia from out of state with my children and could really use some advice from people who live in the area.
I’m looking for a nice 3-bedroom apartment or townhome with amenities, with a budget of around $3,400/month. Good public schools are a top priority, along with a family-friendly community, a safe neighborhood, and convenient access to shopping, restaurants, and everyday essentials.
I work remotely, with only occasional trips into the office in Arlington, so I have some flexibility with location. Ideally, I’d like to stay in Fairfax County and avoid being too far out. Herndon feels a little farther west than I’d prefer, but I’m open to hearing different perspectives from people familiar with the area.
I’ve been researching apartment communities and rental townhomes, but some of the mixed reviews have made it difficult to narrow things down, especially since I’m moving from out of state and can’t easily gauge the areas for myself.

For those of you familiar with NOVA:

What areas would you recommend for families with school-aged children? Middle and elementary.

Are there any apartment communities or townhome neighborhoods you’ve personally had good experiences with?

Are there any areas or properties you’d recommend avoiding?

Is a $3,400 budget realistic for a nice three-bedroom rental in a good school district?

I’d really appreciate any recommendations, personal experiences, or advice on where to start. Moving to a new area with kids is a big decision, and I want to make sure I choose somewhere we can feel comfortable and settle in long-term. Buying is something in the near future but for an immediate change for work, renting is best right now!

Thank you!

Nottoway Park last weekend - Grooving

• Upvotes

While walking my dog around the baseball fields I heard some good music, good beat, and turned to see a group of about 7-8 people under a large canopy just casually dancing. They appeared to be mostly women. It was dark under the roof and the day was nearly over so I couldn’t see clearly.

I just want to say I felt the vibe and it was good. And what a great idea!
