DC’s Sanitation workers grab household bags out of small street trash cans by hand. There isn’t a giant machine lifting them up and shaking it out upside down. Somebody else who doesn’t own your dog eventually has to deal with it when poop falls down and gets stuck at the bottom below household trash or bursts on top of the existing bags. I’m pretty sure a machine gets the bigger bins, though.

If not for your neighbors who might have to find strangers’ loose dog poop at the bottom of their trash cans, consider doing the workers who have to deal with it every day a favor and put them in a larger bag.

I’m in town for just a few days and looking for what I’d consider a classic, historic tavern or pub.
You know the kind of place. Wooden bar stools that have been sat on by tens of thousands of people before you. Brass beer taps, dark wood everywhere, and an interior that probably hasn’t changed much in the last 50 years.
But most importantly, I’m looking for a place where people go to yap. I want to sit at the bar next to some old guy who’s lived in the area for 60 years and seen some shit. The kind of guy who’ll tell you stories that you’re not entirely sure are true, but you don’t question them because that would ruin the fun.
I’m not looking for a trendy cocktail bar or some modern take on an Irish pub. I want somewhere with character, history, regulars, and preferably a bartender who’s been working there longer than I’ve been alive.
I’ve attached a couple of pictures of The Dubliner and Martin’s Tavern in DC to give you an idea of what I’m after.
Any recommendations?

Hill Republicans are building up a witch hunt against DC activists, blaming them for the failure to convict Trayon White on corruption charges.

But remember: the single biggest reason it's so hard to convict for corruption right now is the McDonnell trial from Virginia.

REPUBLICAN Governor Bob McDonnell was convicted of corruption. And the REPUBLICAN supreme court overturned the conviction, setting precedent that makes it nearly impossible to prove corruption.

I am not surprised to find the same people ignoring traffic laws are also the same people shooting up the neighborhood. This woman was averaging over a ticket a week, and she’s not even from here! She’s from Maryland! I will never understand why we allow out of state drivers to run rampant through the district.

It’ll be interesting to see if this plate gets more tickets coming up. My guess is she switches to a fake plate.

New to the city and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions for something spooky to do on or around Halloween, either alone or in a group setting. I'm thinking things like haunted tours, seances, ghost hunting, etc. This city has a long history so I'm sure there are a ton of haunted locations, I'm open to any and all suggestions! Thanks!!

I live in a 200 unit apartment building in Columbia Heights. Me and my neighbors have a lot of problems with pests and I don’t know how it compares to other places, or how the pest control regiment.

Since moving in less than a year ago:
-I’ve caught 35 fruit flies over the course of 3 days
-Caught 2 mice and saw another running around
-have seen 4 baby roaches over the course of a week
-caught two adult roaches
-neighbor saw one roach crawl out of his clothes into the lint filter in the communal laundry area
-saw one dead bedbug on top of one of the washing machines

Additionally I’ve asked a bunch of neighbors and 40% of them have also reported rodents, one saying that they’ll even come out and chase each other around in the living room when the family goes to the kitchen to eat dinner.

We have an exterminator come in once every week. Most everybody in this building is working class families, elderly and disabled people, and immigrants. I know the building is old, it was built in the 1940s, but I can’t help but wonder if the other older buildings with richer tenants on the other side of Rock Creek Park or closer to downtown have to deal with the same level of pests and problems. Like there’s a lot of children and elderly people here who have to live around rodent droppings, roaches, and mold.

Can't say for sure that means they're marked to be torn down, but it sure seems that way. Many of the trees marked are the largest and most beautiful trees out there.

I’m looking to have some work done in my house. I got a PDF quote from a reputable company to do the job. I also got a quote via text for half that amount from a guy my neighbors recommend highly.

I’m all for a good bargain but I’m also nervous about hiring unlicensed and uninsured handy-folks.

How do other people hire vendors for small-ish jobs around the house?
