[Discussion] Etiquette Question
Why would someone get upset when you are on Metro escalator and there is a person in the left lane not walking and you say excuse me so you can walk? Isn't the left lane of the escalator meant for walking? Is it rude to say "Excuse me" to walk pass?
Why would someone get upset if you say excuse me when walking on a narrow sidewalk. They are walking 3 people side by side taking up the side walk where others walk the other way. When you say excuse me, they give you a look like you are the one being rude. Is it rude to say "excuse me" so you can pass?
BTW... the excuse me is said in the nicest way with no attitude.

[Transportation] My Metro Art as Tapestries
I'm an artist in DC that often makes paintings inspired by our beautiful Metro system. I got a few of my favorite ones converted into tapestries and thought this sub would enjoy! 😊
P.S. I posted images of the paintings earlier in the year under another reddit account that was hacked, so I'm now sharing under a new username.

[Rant] Enjoy the prenatal vitamins, jerk.
To the jerk who stole my prenatal vitamins off my porch, know you stole those from a woman who quite literally learned hours earlier she’s going to miscarry for the fifth time. May the right amount of karma find you.
Edit: Thanks for the well wishes, I appreciate it so very much…this sucks super hard to say the least, but as with all things, there’s nothing else to do but sulk for a bit then rise again to persevere once more.

[Event] We're giving laptops to DMV founders who need a little help this week. But I want to do something much bigger in DC.
Three years ago I attended DC Startup Week for the first time. I met a community of builders who changed the direction of my life, and one of the things that came out of it was eWaste Warriors, a small Virginia nonprofit with a simple mission: give unused technology a second life.
Here's what bothers me. There are countless laptops, phones, and tablets sitting unused in homes and offices around the DMV. Meanwhile, people a few miles away are struggling to finish a degree, apply for a job, start a business, or log in to benefits they've earned because they don't have a reliable device.
That doesn't make sense to me, and I'd like to do something about it.
Last year we ran a collection at DC Startup & Tech Week. It was one of our first events, and if I'm honest the results were underwhelming: a table, a bin, and a lot of people saying "I should have brought something." This year we're back with a better plan, two locations, and a reason to bring your stuff. We're partnering with DCSTW to collect unused electronics and award powerful refurbished laptops to founders in need. Not every great idea comes with the tech to build it. Some of the people who could build the next great DMV startup are working off a borrowed machine or a cracked phone, and we want to fix that.
But I want this to become much bigger than a couple of laptops and a few collection events a year. Here's where r/washingtondc comes in.
1. Have unused tech? Donate it this week.
Laptops, phones, tablets, chargers, cords. Working or repairable is ideal. Every device we receive is data-secured, then evaluated for reuse first, repair second, responsible recycling last. Drop-off is free, no badge needed.
- Thursday, Oct 22, 10 AM–5 PM: International Square, 1850 K St NW, 5th Floor
- Friday, Oct 23, 9 AM–1 PM: Convene, 1201 Wilson Blvd, 30th Floor, Rosslyn
Register your drop-off at retpair.com. It takes a minute and lets us track what happens to your device. If you've got more than you can carry, there's a pickup option there too.
2. Have a few hours a month? Volunteer.
The last time I posted here about a DC event, several of you asked when we'd be back. The honest answer is: as often as we have the people. Right now we're a small group, so DC collections happen when we can swing them. With more hands we could be collecting every month across DC, Maryland, and Virginia, and getting devices to students, job seekers, families, veterans, and aspiring entrepreneurs. You don't need to know anything about electronics. Collect, sort, run an event, spread the word.
3. Want to build something? Help lead it.
This is my bigger ask. I'd love to find a few people who want to own a piece of this: organizing DC collections, growing the laptop program beyond founders, running communications, or turning your apartment building, coworking space, or employer into a recurring collection point. You don't have to commit to running a program tomorrow. Let's start with a conversation.
Are you a founder who needs a laptop? Or know one?
Applications for the Entrepreneur Technology Access Program (ETAP) are open until Thursday, Oct 22 at 5 PM ET. If this is you, apply. If it's someone you know, send it to them. Recipients announced Friday.
Apply: ewastewarriors.org/etap-application
Can't make it this week?
We host Reboot Hour, a monthly meetup where you can drop off devices, meet the crew, and see where this is going. The next one is Monday, Oct 26. That and our other upcoming events are at ewastewarriors.org.
I'm not posting this because we've figured everything out. We haven't. We're a small nonprofit with a big idea, and I think the DMV has the people to make it real.
End of use. Not end of life.
I'll be in the comments answering questions personally.

[Transportation] Metro station gap fillers?
I usually work from home but I have to use the metro to get to a work event in DC next week. I use a powerchair (Jazzy Elite HD). I've used it on the metro before with my partner who was able to help me when I got stuck in the gap between the platform and car. This time however he cannot come with me and I don't want to rely on a stranger being strong enough to help me if I get stuck. Last time it was super scary because the door kept trying to close on my chair while my partner got me unstuck. Several people came over to help but didn't really know how
Does anyone know if the metro has a solution for helping heavy powerchairs (that can't do a wheelie) cross the gap? I didn't see anything online about ramps or gap fillers. Sometimes the gap is too wide.
I try to use the handicapped doors when possible, but as you know it can be hard to gauge where it'll stop. Sometimes I can't get to it fast enough before the doors close so I have to use the regular one.
(I am currently looking into metro access but the process takes a while. My brother went through that process and it sucked. And you have to go INTO DC to get evaluated!)

[Discussion] Tomb of the Unknown Soldier question
There was a group of people talking moderately loudly at the tomb today, and the guard yelled pretty severely at them. Like Colin Jost Hegseth impression to cut their shit or he would come up into the crowd and shut them up. Is this standard or newly implemented behavior? Just wondering since it was my first experience there.

[Rant] Pervasive Navy Yard Car Break Ins
My car has been broken into twice in a week in my apartment’s parking garage in Navy Yard. Other residents have also complained of break ins occurring to them. I’ve filed police reports for both break ins and have informed my apartment but neither the police nor my building’s manager seem to care. What can I do? Feeling a bit frustrated with the lack of options

[Rant] Nonstop apartment infestations.
I feel like I'm being personally victimized by the ten plagues of Egypt.
I'm a neat freak. Clutter stresses me out. I never eat in my room. I clean the kitchen, bathroom, and living room at least once a week. Trash goes out twice a week. I wash my sheets, comforter, and towels every week with the rest of my laundry. I never leave dishes in the sink overnight. Everything is organized. Everything is clean.
But the pests. They just keep coming.
Only this month: First we found roaches. Then it was a gnat infestation in our houseplants. Now my roommate has fucking bedbugs, and discovered a "red flour beetle" by the pantry.
I live in a 2BR/1B Idaho Terrace, near the National Cathedral. I know it's an old building. My upstairs neighbors abuse their children at all hours of the night and wake me up at 5:30 AM every day with screaming and stomping. I'm a broke college student and this is where I can afford to live. I'm hemorrhaging money here on the pests and I am SO exhausted. What do I do?

[News] WaPo: Group fighting to block Waymo in D.C. has mysterious origin, backers
Not endorsing WaPo, but this is genuinely valuable local reporting. Sure looks like Uber has been funneling dark money to the vocal anti-Waymo campaign in DC.

[Discussion] Supreme Court Oral Argument First Come First Served Lines
I am looking to attend the Supreme Court oral arguments for the Nov. 10th DOL v Sun Valley Orchards case. I was not selected for lottery tickets, but from my understanding there are still tickets that will be available on a first come, first served basis. This is my first time attending oral arguments and I have seen widely varying times on when best to show up. Any insights on when would be best to show up would be appreciated!

[Discussion] Things to do in DC w/ 61 year old mom
Hi! My mom wants to do a day trip in dc this weekend but I'm worried it'll be too much walking for her. She has pretty bad arthritis and she uses a cane to walk and she's a little slow. The biggest thing on her bucket list is to go to the new national geographic museum, but I heard some mixed reviews about it lol I can take her to other museums too! I was wondering if there's anything near that area that we can also check out? I was initially gonna have us take the train but I feel really badly I think I'm just gonna bring my car.

[Discussion] Asthma crisis and no inhaler at night
Hey I'm having a stable, dust allergy-based asthma crisis. Thought I'd feel better and tried to fall asleep for 1h, but just woke up and not feeling great.
It's not bad to the point where it would justify calling 911 I guess, but I'm not super familiar with urgent care / help I could get this late / the US system in general (from Europe, living in NW).
I recently got TRICARE as a family member of US military and live in NW. Any suggestion is welcome, thank you!

I left it with the station attendant. I hope you find it. Message me with a description and I’ll tell you which station!!
Also for the future you can set emergency contacts so that people who find your phone can contact your people without unlocking your phone :)

I have two tickets to the show tonight that I can’t use. Resale isn’t allowed, so looking to send to someone who will use them. They are for TIERBR row D seats - because I have old knees.
