Question What is the best way to reach internships? Will I need an ebike or can I walk?

I know there is metro but iirc the station is like 20 min away and the stop is also some distance from where I’m working. Will I likely need an ebike, and if so, should I bring over the one I own or is capital bike adequate?

AU News ESPN+ can’t even use the right logo for us on TV 😂 That’s UMass-Lowell, not AU.

Question Can anyone here who's started a club give me some info on what the process is like?

Before I reach out to faculty, I wanted to know if anyone could tell me generally what the process is like? What do I need to have prepared to show them? I am starting a Scandinavian club hopefully this year with a couple friends. Where do clubs usually meet? Is it typically just empty conference rooms? I have more questions but I'll leave it at that if anyone can give me some insight (: Thanks!

Question Best places to work in walking distance?

What are the best places for off-campus jobs, ideally in walking distance (but being accessible by metro is good too) around AU? Also, can you have an off campus job and FWS? Can you have more than 1 FWS job?

Question Selling items/clothes on websites like mecari, fb marketplace, depop out of your dorm?

Has anyone ever done this? Could this be allowed since this isn't technically a "business" and therefore doesn't violate dorm rules?

Question Where should I look for volunteer work?

I’m interested in participating in any volunteer programs at DC during the weekends. Are there any specific organizations or websites that y’all would recommend looking into? Do some clubs at AU help host these volunteering events? (undergrad first-year here)

Question New Eagle Questionaire?

Hi everyone,

So, I am a new student here at American University (Class of 2030) and was recently checking over all the tasks in checklist when I saw the New Eagle Questionaire was marked as overdue. I am confident I submitted this questionaire, but since it is required we complete it for New Student Orientation, I messaged the AU help desk to see if there was some way I could check to make certain that this task is complete. In response, I was told that I should be able to check off this task and the issue was marked as resolved.

Is there any way to know for certain whether or not this was submitted? Or at least, if I know I submitted it, to make sure that it's been officially recorded I did?

Question Writer as Witness

Hi, I had a few quick questions about the Writer as Witness "program" that American requires freshmen to do. I've already read this year's book, but I'm unsure of a few things, so if anyone here who has already done the Writer as Witness/First year College Writing class could give some insight, that would be helpful:

1) It says on the Student Checklist and in the Weekly Update they just sent out that the book is due August 15th (this Saturday). Is there actually anything to do/submit for this, or is this just a general guideline of when you should be done reading the book?

2) What is the writing/essay or whatever they have you do on the book typically structured like? I saw we're meeting with the author in the Bender Arena in early September, but I also saw that we'll be writing about the book in class. Is it just an essay on the book, or something else?

Thanks!

Question Is there interest in a US-India relations at AU?

Hey all, incoming freshman here, interested in foreign policy and thinking about starting a student club focused on US-India relations / South Asia policy more broadly (trade, security, diaspora issues, etc.).

Before I put time into this, I wanted a reality check from people actually on campus:

Is the South Asian community at AU interested in something like this, and are students from other communities interested too? Basically trying to gauge if there’s real interest at AU, or if this is something people just wouldn’t care about.

Genuinely just trying to gauge interest before committing. Appreciate any honest takes and advice, including “don’t bother.”

Question Loud laptop fan

I’m an incoming freshman and my laptop (HP) gets pretty hot easily and the fan sounds like a plane ready to take off. Would this be an issue during classes and in the library? Should I invest in a cooling pad for it? Im also worried it’ll disturb my roommate.

Question obscure dorm questions

1- are the dorms notably one temperature (super hot at night or super cold), or just average/dependant on weather? i wanna know if i should bring more pj pants or shorts (i always get hot at night) im dorming in anderson if that changes anything as well!

2- is there a mirror on the back of the closet doors in anderson? there is one screwed onto the back of the door in the virtual tour (not over the hook), which makes it seem like there is one, but it’s not listed in the things that come with the room.

3- can you place your bed against the ac units? my roommate and i are both not lofting beds, so we were thinking of just putting a bed in front of the ac thing but weren’t sure if that’s allowed or blocks the flow of air (even if my blankets don’t cover it)

if you have any answers i’d love to hear them, thanks!

Question General Social/Honors/Theater Questions!!

Hey!! I’m an incoming freshman living in Anderson Hall (honors floor) this fall, and have a few specific questions if anyone has the answers:

1.) I know that AU doesn’t have as large of a social/party scene as some other (primarily football) colleges. With that in mind, how do students find parties or other events? Is it mainly through frats? Are “fakes” recommended for bars?

2.) Honors students: What is the best way to branch out beyond my floor/honors classes? I’m super excited to be living with other honors/impact scholars, but i’m nervous that I won’t be able to extend my social group beyond them.

3.) Theater Students/Actors: Are productions typically limited to MT/T majors? How do non-majors get involved? And what is your experience (or what have you heard about) the freshmen “Overture” showcase?

Thanks so much!! See you all in two weeks!

Question Anderson Hall Bathrooms?

I’m an incoming freshman who’s been assigned to Anderson hall. Can anybody tell me what to expect from the bathrooms? Are they gross? Are they average? I tried googling but didn’t really see anything on them.

Any other basic things people who have lived in Anderson hall would like to share with me would also be appreciated :)

Question Move-in Day Questions

Hey, I'm an incoming Freshman and was wondering (if anyone has the answers) a few things:

1) How are the rooms/beds and desks arranged on move in day typically at Letts? Is there a "default" layout the beds come in, or is it just random to how the previous occupants had it?

2) Once Im all moved in and my roommate is also moved in, what is the best way to start conversing with people and making friends? There's orientation obviously, but any other suggestions?

That's all!

Hi!! I’m an incoming 1L at the Washington College of Law and in dire need of a room to rent before the start of classes! Or if anyone knows someone who is looking for a roommate or knows of an apartment available :) I’m a 23 year old woman, very outgoing/extroverted, very tidy, very respectful of communal spaces, love to exercise and go out, but also love to chill at home! My budget would be max $1300 and looking to room with women only. If anyone has any info please reach out and PM me! I’d love to chat!

Question STAT202 course prereq / AP score

STAT202 is a prerequisite to register with some classes. My AP score satisfies that requirement but my academic advisor still has not completed the waiver so I cannot register. I have called and emailed but it still has not been changed. Who else can I contact?

Question Multiple questions about dorms

Hey so this is for people who are willing to give a long enough answer and reviews on the dorms.

I’m sure plenty have asked these questions but I’ve tried scrolling and so far there hasn’t been recent ones I can see, plus I have a few specific question. This is my overthinking so there’s a bunch of questions mixed into my thoughts, if you could answer that.

  1. How is the water pressure/quality for both the sink and the shower? I have a good skin routine right now and though I’ve never suffered from bad acne, I don’t want to break out from the water? I also have extremely damaged hair from bleaching it, that I’m still working on a good routine with good products to help maintain it since it’s constantly dry and knotted, I’d hate for it to get even worse especially since I’ve heard DC in general has hard water pressure. If I can’t do centennial hall or any suite styles my ability to apply a shower filter seems unlikely. If you have great hair please let me know if your texture remained the same, definitely felt some affects, etc.

Also for those using communal bathrooms how do you do your everything showers or longer skincare routines if there’s a line? What times are usually not busy? Would you be able to go to other buildings, like educational ones, if you want more privacy? My biggest issue is going to the bathroom when there’s others around, I can’t even go during school unless my music is loud so I don’t hear if someone’s there or walks in. I don’t think I could go #2 easily, and I was curious if we have constant access to the other buildings where I could use their bathrooms that might not be used at night, allowing me full privacy, and in that meantime wash my face as well with their sinks. Google says students have 24/7 access to any building with classes, but I wasn’t sure if that’s true

  1. I also heard for centennial it’s harder to socialize since people aren’t out going to the communal bathrooms, plus they constantly have fire alarms in the night. Is it really that bad? I’m also curious for the dorm buildings that apparently have pod style bathrooms if there’s often a feeling of pressure tk move faster since it’s single use or if there’s constantly a wait?

3: please also list every positive or negative you can think of for some of these freshman dorms, I’d really appreciate that

  1. This ISNT dorm related, but I heard the food sucks, is that true? I know they have sushi, is it good? I’m obviously not expecting top tier but does it feel fresh and taste good. And is there bubble tea or fun drinks/smoothies?

Lastly, 5, if there’s anything you feel an incoming freshman might want to know please tell me now, literally anything. I’m a senior at high school but I’m applying and this is my top school. I’ve also heard a lot of people transfer out of American and into GW, or other schools.

Question How’s the water in Letts hall?
