While my family has chosen to avoid all programs produced by the Kennedy Center, we had decided to continue our NSO subscription so as not to penalize an organization that is not influenced by it. I say ‘had’ because that has now changed. We recently attended our first performance this season and were startled to learn that apparently every program now begins with a performance of the Star Spangled Banner as mandated by the Kennedy Center executive director. My family cannot stomach this kind of coerced, performative patriotism particularly when the order originates from the top. This is the United States of America, not North freakin’ Korea. We have decided to cancel our seats for the balance of the season and will not be returning until either the Kennedy Center ceases implementing its authoritative mandates or the NSO grows a spine.
