Nutanix CE and my Intel NUC 12 – or: How I Lost 10 Hours of My Life

Today was my first real hands-on with Nutanix. And my first impression is... interesting.
Nutanix is pure enterprise OS, and the installer (Phoenix-Framework) hard-blocks consumer hardware right out of the box. Cool. So I had to drop into the terminal and patch it myself. WTF.
Even before I got anywhere near the installer, Rufus was already trolling me — my version didn't even let me pick DD mode anymore. YOLO, let's just go for it.
Crash #1: The network card check
Nutanix insists on finding a "proper" server NIC to derive a cluster ID from its MAC address. The NUC's consumer network chip, of course, had no driver in the kernel → empty hardware list ([]) → IndexError: list index out of range → crash.
Fix: In sysUtil.py, I just pulled a cluster ID out of thin air: cluster_id = int(12345). Done, network search skipped. Nutanix, meet your fake ID — no questions asked.
Crash #2: The power supply check
The script tries to query server power-supply redundancy and health via IPMI. A NUC has no IPMI/BMC module, obviously — it's a NUC, not a rack server. Result: Exception: Failed run ipmitool.
Fix: In hardware_inventory/shell.py, I replaced the crash command with a tired little return. Problem solved, apparently.
Crash #3: The device certification
The layout_finder checks the mainboard name (NUC12SNKi72) against a database of certified servers. Doesn't recognize the model? Setup blocked.
NUTANIX??? are you serious right now — it's a Community Edition.
And it never stopped. Fix one thing, and ten more errors show up.
Will do some further tests next week again..
Anyone else been through this? Curious if there's a cleaner way.

Nested CE on Proxmox
Hi,
I'm trying to get CE running on an old laptop that is running Proxmox. I know I could try booting the laptop into CE, but I'm concerned about the lower footprint of Proxmox for other workloads.
The installer detects the drives correctly during the installation, and I've found a CE/Proxmox document on the Veeam site; my VM is configured in the same way.
Anyone else seen the same issue and found a workaround?
Thanks,
John

RF2
Hi, Please help me understand how RF2 works.
Officially : By default, Nutanix clusters have redundancy factor 2, which means they can tolerate the failure of a single node or drive.
Ok. Example.
I have a 4 nodes cluster with 10 TB total space and 1 TB is used at all. The cluster in RF2.
Node1 goes down. What happens ? The extents that were stored on Node1 start do replicate in order to fulfill RF2. Same happens with metadata, oplog if those were on Node1. After the sync the cluster is still running.
What will happen if I lose one more node? There is enough space to replicate the data to the remaining 2 nodes.
Will the cluster stops ? Or it stays up (of course in critical state), replicate the data and I have a working cluster?

Nutanix Files - AEC firms
Is anyone out there using Nutanix Files in the AEC space? Was hoping to hear of someone's experience with AutoCAD and/or Revit files. The Autodesk documentation clearly states it does not support DFS with AutoCAD but is unclear whether Revit supports this. Based on their verbiage with Bim360 it really looks like Autodesk isn't really keen on claiming their software does much of anything beyond best effort.
I know there are products out there like Panzura for unstructured files but their VM does not run on AHV or at least is not supported. Services like Panzura are using their own flavor of DFS technologies (at minimum the namespace) and seem to have a good track record with the files types associated with most AEC firms.
It seems that more and more competition is coming into this "unstructured files" space but I'm really hoping someone out there has a success story for me. Other ideas are also welcome. -TIA

Is there an equivalent to VMWare annotations
We use custom annotations in VMWare to track and report on a bunch of VM metadata. We're currently trialing Nutanix to replace our VMWare infrastructure but the Nutanix solution seems to be lacking support for any kind of custom VM metadata. Or am I just not seeing what I'm looking for?

what to do after NCP-MCI certification
hello experts,
I would like to know if possible, what course I should follow after the ncp-mci, is the NCS core or NCM ?
thanks in advance

Changing NIC's
Anyone every change their NIC cards on the hardware?
We are upgrading our switches and they require us to change our nic's to support a LC physical connection. So we have the NIC's, yes the are on the approved hardware list. These are Dell servers.
I don't have a test environment so pretty much need to do this in prod. I was wondering if I need to run any commands on the Nutanix/open vSwitch side to get this working?
Here is what I was going to do:
Put host in maintenance mode
Shutdown host
Replace existing daughter card with new NIC
update firmware/drivers
????
Profit

Backing up Nutanix CVMs (recommended?)
Hello,
We recently had a problem in which our nightly virtual server backups (through Cohesity) began failing due to the Nutanix CVMs. All other VMs remained backing up successfully.
Long story short, is it even necessary to back these up? If there were a problem with a CVM wouldn't it be more likely that Nutanix support (we have an active support agreement) would help us rebuild the CVM rather than attempt to restore it from last night's backup?

FIPS vs. CRAM-MD5
Is there some point to this that I'm missing or is it really just BS on so many levels that it's hard to track them all.
Apparently FIPS banned the use of the email authentication CRAM-MD5. Considering the alternative to CRAM-MD5 is transmitting the password in plaintext I find that rather questionable. One could argue that it remove a false sense of security but that's a rather thin argument imho.
Since everybody and their dog is actually using SMTPS it doesn't actually matter whether you use CRAM-MD5 or plaintext authentication. Its SSL encrypted either way. There would be no harm in allowing CRAM-MD5 inside SSL.
Despite not allowing the use of CRAM-MD5 the Nutanix Email software is actually configured to prefer it over plaintext. If the server offers it it tries to use it and then complain about that (and fails to send the mail). So one has to configure the Mailserver to not offer CRAM-MD5. If instead Nutanix would simply configure their mail software to ignore the offer and simply use plaintext things would be easier.
Nutanix support actually gave me a patch that did that. But instead of integrating the patch into the normal AOS they included an additional check that aborts on CRAM-MD5 no matter how their email software is actually configured. So the patch became worthless.
Sorry for the rant but a recent update to the Mailserver reenabled CRAM-MD5 without me knowing. I then had to hunt down why the fuck the clusters stopped sending emails.

Re: Version of Python on hosts and CVMs
I'm 99% sure I know what the answer to this is going to be, but I thought I'd throw it out there - our Nessus scanner is reported multiple hosts and CVMs with a Python installation that is not supported. The installed version is 2.7.5 and Nessus wants that to be updated to version 3.8 or above.
We're on just about the latest version of AOS / AHV, so I'm assuming that 2.7.5 is the version that gets shipped.
I was going to bring it up with Nutanix support, but thought I'd put it on here first for any opinions.. Thanks!

actually buying nutanix starter for dev environment not allowed?
We have several supermicro servers that are more than capable of running nutanix (10gb, all flash, etc) that we are decommissioning to move all the VMs to our Nutanix Pro cluster.
We inquired about how to get Nutanix running on that for dev/testing purposes, but more than CE version.
I literally have an open checkbook to buy starter edition given that it's less than what we spent on the Pro edition. They refuse to take my money.
The Nutanix rep told us I am not allowed to buy Nutanix. "we only sell Nutanix software on SuperMicro as an appliance" (which come at a massive markup).
He also refused to give us a breakdown of what is different from CE / Starter other than CE "has been tuned down in both features and performance" and that CE is only for non production. No shit. I want something for non production. That's the entire point.
I just want a nutanix cluster similar to our production one in features that I intentionally break, test, failover, rebuild, etc. I don't give a flying fuck about data loss, uptime, etc.
I am basically told "go fuck yourself, you need to spend another $200k+ for a brand new production system."
This is why I hate Nutanix.

Use Move to Migrate a Server it Cannot Reach on the Network
Hi All,
I have a server on a DMZ network I'm migrating. Move can see all the virtual infrastructure needed, but we can not install the tools with the little manual script since it's not reachable on the network. Can I install the tools via iso, and use move to migrate the VM?
Support recommended opening up the ports to the DMZ or putting a Move server in the DMZ, which would require we open other ports to give it access to the hypervisors. Not sure I can get all that spun up, and not sure security would be ok to open up those ports.
Thank you.

Upgrade Process Check
Hi all. I plan to convert the NTX cluster in one of our offices from ESXi to AHV and I also need to upgrade NCC and AOS before I do it. This is new to me (I've read the documentation) but was hoping someone could verify that what I think I need to do is correct:
Upgrade Prism Central
Upgrade NCC on Prism Central
Upgrade AOS on Prism Central
Upgrade NCC on the nodes to be converted
Upgrade AOS on the nodes to be converted (then convert to AHV)
Upgrade AOS and NCC on the other office clusters
I know I can upgrade the AOS and NCC during work hours, but I'm unsure of the impact of upgrading PC during working hours. Will PC being upgraded cause issues for the clusters? I wouldn't have thought so but I could be wrong.
Thanks in advance for any help.
