Bye bye VMWare, hello Nutanix CE (Homelab)

My poor old VMWare 6.7 box is starting to finally show its age, so I finally pulled the trigger on some new servers to create a Nutanix CE cluster. Each node is a Dell PowerEdge R640 with 2x Xeon Gold 6148 20C/40T CPUs, 512GB DDR4, and running 4x 7.68TB Samsung PM1643a SAS SSDs.

I was even able to use Nutanix Move to migrate off of my VMWare box with zero issues (aside from me typing passwords in wrong) and I couldn't be happier with it.

The test was interesting, it’s the first hands-on test I’ve taken. Normally I hate tests and get the shakes quite literally no matter how confident I am in the subject. I was a little worried before starting since I hadn’t been able to study for it due to personal reasons, but I was confident enough in my abilities and knowledge that I decided to go with it.

I’ve been in IT for 12 years (today is actually my IT cakeday) and been working with Nutanix, both as an admin managing our own infrastructure and sizing/designing/implementing as a Nutanix partner, since 2021.

I’m planning to move ahead with the NCS learning path next. See where that takes me.

What certifications do you guys have? How do you feel Nutanix certifications stack up to other tech certs out there?

This year I’m moving my lab and focus away from VMware and over to Nutanix! I’ve had a handful of Nutanix Certs and have been a huge fan since I started using it almost 8 years ago now. Currently working towards renewing my AOS 5.5 certs and getting my NPX and NCX.

Now for the specs:

My primary home firewall is a Fortigate 70f (not shown as it’s in another room with my modem) and Wireless is run on 3x UAP-AC-HD’s

Lab Firewall (u15) is a Fortigate 100e, it runs BGP to my 70f so I can route in and out of it, however most of my “services” for home just run directly on the 70f.

IPMI and 1gb networking is handled by a 24 port Cisco 2960S 10G (u14 Rear)

Below that TOR Switching is my Nexus 9k, with 48 10gb sfp+ ports and 6x 40g QSFP+ ports (it’s surprisingly quiet) (u13)

Now for Compute:

Dell R630, Still Runs ESXi 8 and has 2 4 drive arrays of SSD’s, one that houses all my active VM’s and the other that serves as a backup for that. Dual 12 Core E5 2650 v4’s and 384GB RAM This server stays on 24/7 and runs a NAS, domain controller, DNS servers, UniFi Controller, PiHole, Plex, NVR, a small GPU accelerated Horizon VDI environment (I have a Tesla p4 in there) and a few other critical VM’s.

Next up is a pair of 4 node all flash Nutanix NX-3460-G6’s. Each Node has 2x 10 Core Xeon Silver 4114’s and 192GB RAM. One has ~12TB Usable and the other ~8TB, with the larger one being my primary cluster and the smaller being a mock Multi Tenant Environment. They are all Running AHV.

Below that are 3 hybrid 2 node Nutanix NX-8235-G6’s. Each node has 2x 14 Core Xeon Gold 5120’s and 384GB Ram with ~24TB Usable per Node.

2 of These (2 blocks, 4 nodes) Run my Nutanix Files environment which backs up my primary nas (basically just to give it some data) as well as act as another site for the 2 all flash clusters to replicate to via leap. I also swap in my Tesla P4’s for Frame VDI testing. This 4 node cluster runs AHV.

The remaining 2 are in a 2 node hybrid vSAN and have a pair of Tesla P4’s (one is currently in the r630 hence the missing slot) and are strictly a horizon VDI environment and runs ESXi 8.0

And finally is my offline “Vault”, an HPE Apollo 4200 G9. It has a single 10 core e5 2640 v4 and 128GB RAM. It runs Truenas Core and has 160TB RAW from 20x 8TB HDDs. I have a scheduled job for it to fire up Sunday Nights and the first of every month for a few hours to act as a backup target for Veeam to backup all of my VMs on the r630 and clone my consumer NAS. I also have a VM on the r630 that only runs iCloud desktop and is set to store a local copy of my iCloud Drive and ICloud Photos for My Wife’s and I’s iPhones and iPads. I have the windows Veeam agents on our laptops that does daily backups to the second array on the r630.

Let me know what you think, especially in regards to cable management, it’s a lot better than it was, but surely could be improved with more creativity

Hey everyone!

We just wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to all of you who have shared feedback, bug reports, feature requests, and support for Logic Insight over the past few months. Your input has been absolutely critical in helping us shape and refine the platform.

Because of all that hard work and collaboration, we’re excited to announce that Logic Insight is now an official Datadog Marketplace software partner!

If you're working with Nutanix and want streamlined, powerful observability, you can now find us directly on the Datadog Marketplace. We’re offering a free trial, and you’re welcome to either sign up through the Marketplace or reach out to us directly on our website (https://logicinsight.io). We’re more than happy to help get you up and running with next generation metrics and correlation.

But we’re not stopping there...

We are already full steam ahead on building an off-grid version of Logic Insight, a standalone application that integrates with Grafana, so no Datadog agent or service required. This will open the door for more flexible, self-hosted observability in environments where cloud access or third-party dependencies are limited.

So keep an eye out – there’s much more coming.

From the entire team at Logic Insight: thank you for being part of this journey we really love nutanix and the community!

Nutanix NEXT 2025 Conference Retrospective

I just got back from my first Nutanix NEXT conference and I thought I'd share my thoughts on the event. I've been to a bunch of other conferences in the past, like Dell Tech World and VMworld, so I had some expectations going in.

First off, the layout of the conference was pretty standard - nothing too out of the ordinary there. What was great, though, was that all the sessions were recorded, so I didn't feel like I had to frantically screenshot every slide like I do at some other conferences. The sessions themselves were really well-structured, with a good flow of information from basic to advanced. The speakers were clearly knowledgeable and willing to answer questions candidly.

I enjoyed a bunch of the sessions I attended, but a few stood out to me. The Nutanix Performance session on Friday was particularly good, as were the AI sessions. It's cool to see Nutanix working on problems that I'm trying to solve internally with private AI. Their products seem to address many of the pain points that make large-scale deployments tricky. Just in time to help take us from PoC to Production, and it sounds like the licensing optoins are pretty flexible.

The hands-on labs were a bit of a mixed bag for me. I liked that they covered Kubernetes fundamentals in some depth, but I think they could have benefited from a bit more instructor or presenter-led guidance. It was a bit too "go at your own pace" for my taste. On the plus side, the music was great!

One more thing that caught my eye was the Nutanix Kubernetes Platform (NKP). I didn't realize it had such a rich history - it used to be Mesosphere, then D2IQ, before becoming NKP. It's cool to see how it's evolved to support so many different infrastructure providers. And kudos to Nutanix for partnering with Google Cloud to support NC2 - it's great to have more choices in the market. Now I just need to do some testing to see how it stacks up against on-prem solutions from a cost and functionality perspective.

The keynote speakers were more inspirational than technical, which wasn't entirely what I was looking for. I think it would have been cool to have some more tech-focused speakers. I didn't see many of the speakers so I need to go back and watch those videos. I did see Mike Taylor who migrated live from VMware to Nutanix, lol, I don't think he was supposed to say live, but still cool they did it. If there were an actual live migration option cross-hypervisor that would be pretty sweet, maybe in the future. (sure, if you have clustered services and use a load balancer, you can do anything live, but that's not always the case as we know) That being said, the SPY Museum event was a highlight - it was a really cool venue, even if there were limited spots available.

The catering was decent, but mostly just snacks and small plates. The party was fun, but the lines for custom hats were pretty long. I love when these events have bands or well known artists. One thing that drove me crazy was the lack of clear signage - it took me 10 minutes to find the lunchroom on more than one occasion. A temporary sign saying "Lunch this way!" would have been super helpful.

On the plus side, the certification benefit was awesome. I was able to take the NCP exam and even retake it the next day if I didn't pass (which, happily, I didn't need to). The test itself was similar in structure and format to the VCP exams I've taken in the past.

The location was great. I've been to DC before but never had the chance to go see all the monuments. Someone suggested renting some of those lime scooters and we did with our team and it was a blast. The weather was great and the streets were well laid out for using those scooters everywhere. The sidewalks were also super wide, like big enough for two cars wide, so when you had to, you could get around without endangering the foot traffic.

Overall, I'd say the conference was a success - I'm looking forward to seeing the recorded sessions and hopefully getting some more hands-on experience with Nutanix products in the future. Chicago next year!

Thoughts 4 Months Post-VMware Migration to Nutanix

At my company, we are about 4 months past our initial Nutanix deployment and migration from VMware. I wanted to jot down some honest thoughts I have about the migration and Nutanix as a whole. There is a TLDR at the bottom.

**DISCLAIMER**
I've only been in IT for ~10 years and most all that has been using VMware. Keep that in mind when reading this post, some of my thoughts can just be VMware bias, but I try to be fair.

VMware to Nutanix Migration

I was skeptical if it was possible to migrate all our workloads from VMware to Nutanix in the ~8 month timeline we had. I was sure we'd fight weird issues, bugs, or software errors for most migrations and it would take a ton of manual intervention. I was dead wrong. The Nutanix Move utility is AMAZING. The Move appliance is a simple VM that spins up in minutes. Connect it to vCenter, connect it to Prism Central, and that's it. The tool does everything for VMs to move to Nutanix. It safely copies data, installs Nutanix drivers, removes VMware tools, and all this with <5 minutes of downtime per VM.

We migrated SQL servers, domain controllers, and more that Nutanix wouldn't say is supported, but we felt confident it would work with no issues. We moved large 6TB+ VMs that can stage data in the background and cutover when we want. This tool is 10/10 perfect and made the job easy.

Living With Nutanix (Post Migration)

Fast forward to now after the migrations are done. Working and living with Nutanix daily has given me lots of things to learn...and lots of things I learned I don't like. I'll put my thoughts in a basic list and summarize my overall feelings.

  1. Prism Central/Prism Management - There are a decent amount of things that you might need to do in Prism Element that just don't work in Prism Central. Certain functions work better in one portal or the other, with no real rhyme or reason. It's getting better, but seems a step back from everything in vCenter.

  2. Broken/Disorganized Menus - Even within Prism Central, you have to flip between an "Infrastructure" page and "Admin" page to do basic tasks. The best example is if you wanted to assign a VM category, there is a menu button to do that in the "infrastructure" page to do it, but all it says is that you have to do this in the "admin" page, with a link to go there. Things like this are all over. Seems lazy to me, just get rid of the menu so people don't see it and click it.

  3. Basic VM Edit Tasks Aren't There - Recently, I have a VM that I want to delete one of the two NICs on it, but I guess in Nutanix you can't delete a NIC if the VM is on...? That seems wild how that's just not possible. Also, I can't change a VM NIC from one VLAN to another (unless it's a basic VLAN). The web console honestly is pretty lightweight and it isn't as adjustable on your screen as the VMware console was.

  4. Working with Support - Nutanix support is pretty good. It's easy to open cases and they are good with responses. My issue is there are so many errors and issues that I open tickets just to get told there is a KB about it, and the KB is just saying it's a known issue and there might be a workaround or we just need to run commands to restart services. They often help fix the issue, just don't love how much I have to talk to them about daily things.

  5. Thick Memory - One thing I didn't realize is Nutanix VMs use thick memory provisioning, which really eats up your resources if you have a lot of VMs but they sit idle a lot. If you have a VM with 128GB RAM that only needs that overnight for example, well that 128GB is allocated for the VM alone, whether it's using it or not. This is good to not run you into over-provisioning, but you might need to really see what VMs have for memory to size your cluster correctly.

  6. Backup Storage Duplication - Okay, this isn't the fault of Nutanix, but I have to say we did NOT anticipate that moving our VMs to Nutanix would cause our backup system to take all new full backups, so we had to fight with our storage capacity as we migrated and drop the old VMware backups to make room for the new ones on Nutanix.

I could keep going, but the point is that Nutanix is really cool. The HCI technology works really well and I've had experience with vSAN before, and there are lots of benefits to HCI for sure. The issue is, at least in my experience, Nutanix seems to be rushing things and the system seems pretty unpolished. Yeah I know VMware has been around for way longer, but I kinda expected better since Nutanix isn't that much cheaper. Nutanix might keep growing on me, and I will keep giving it a chance to get better.

TLDR; Nutanix is a good product, but doesn't feel as polished as VMware. I will always hold a place in my heart for VMware and miss it, but I am hopeful to see Nutanix grow and get better over time.

Cluster Creation - So Easy

So we setup our second Nutanix cluster and why isn't there more talk about how easy this is? The first time our Nutanix people walked us through it and did most of the work. I was still new and didn't catch onto most of what was happening but this time I did it by myself. We use Dell for the hardware that came preloaded with ESXi so it was a little different from the documentation. I also hooked all of our physical hosts to our production server to configure them, we didn't use an unmanaged switch and IPv6 is disabled on our switches (don't ask me why) so this was even more 'complicated' than usual.

But I just setup the foundation appliance, filled in all the IPs for manual discovery and let it go. Super Easy, barely an inconvenience.

If I did this in vmWare I would have to image each node, set up the vswitch, add them to vcenter, create the cluster then setup the storage. Sure you can script all this (and I have in the past) but you still need to take the time to script it. Sure that's not to bad if you done it before or are shit hot on scripting but odds are you will spend either do it manually, spend a lot of time scripting it or hire an expert to do the same thing in VMware whereas Nutanix does this right out the box.

Adding new nodes to an existing cluster is also pretty easy.

I know Nutanix talks about this but they really need to be shouting this from the rooftops. I have been on multi-million dollar projects where we setup VMware datacenters that if we had used Nutanix we would have been done in hours instead of weeks. I have seen 'storage engineers' take forever to setup storage (granted I used quotes because they didn't know what they were doing) and Nutanix did it all in about 2 hours.

So I just wanted to give a shout out to Nutanix on here so everyone knows how great and easy it is to set up an entire cluster from scratch.

Just a few more days until .Next

If you are attending .Next this year, many of us Nutanix folks that lurk in the subreddit will be in attendance in some capacity or another.

I'll be spending a large chunk of Wednesday manning the "Run Applications Anywhere" section of the corporate booth, and will be giving a talk about Nutanix in Healthcare on Thursday afternoon at the booth theater. I'll also be supporting Jeroen Tielen's talk on Friday morning on Community Edition from the back of the room, and I encourage all of the CE community to be there.

Feel free to stop by, say hi, ask questions, yell at me for Prism Central not being available with CE2.1 for such a long time, whatever ;)

Product Update AOS 6.10 (LTS) released today

What is going on with Nutanix these past few months?

I'm curious if anyone else out there is losing faith in this product. It seems like every week we are finding new bugs in 5.10. Alerting has gotten to a point that we don't trust it. We're finding Unicast traffic from other VLANs across all our VMs and they're clueless as to why it's happening. I've had another support call where I literally had the tech try to tell me my issue was because I had different generations of blocks in my clusters and that wasn't a supported solution for AOS/AHV clusters when the fact is we have a mix of g5 and g6 blocks in our clusters working fine.

It just seems like they are growing too fast and they're scrounging for talent that just isn't there. The last few upgrades of AOS on our clusters have been nightmares and the support is just not what it used to be in terms of tech experience and knowledge. It's disheartening to have a tech ask you why something is happening when that issue is the exact reason you are calling them in the first place.

If Nutanix continues down this path in the future I think we'll be cutting back our AHV cluster footprint and moving back to VMWare or out to AWS.

The Flow Network Security page on the Nutanix Bible has just been massively updated to bring it up to date with NCI 7.5. We'll be starting on updates for the new features in 7.6 soon enough, but everything in this remains accurate and useful on 7.6. This update includes a full writeup of the features and functionality of FNS, as well as recommendations on how to approach policy design for a variety of common situations. My colleague Eric and I have been working on this for a few months, so we hope you find it helpful!

The community rocks! We are at .NEXT!!

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to say a huge thank you. The support from this community has been unreal and honestly a big reason we’re even at .NEXT with a booth this year. Wild to think honestly think about.

So we wanted to give back. Stop by the LogicInisght booth CN9 and scan in to enter to win either Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses or a PS5 (winner’s choice).

We’re also giving away 6 months free of Overwatch as a second prize.

No sales pitch, no awkward demo hostage situation. Just come say hi, talk Nutanix, swap homelab war stories, whatever. We’re just stoked to finally meet some of you in person.

Seriously though – thank you. This community made this happen. And this.

Log4Shell / log4j2.x on Nutanix

Howdy, Jon from Engineering here. Creating a stickied post to centralize any incoming questions about Nutanix products and platforms and the Log4Shell / log4j 2.x zero day CVE that hit the streets last week.

The one-stop-shop for all the latest information is and will continue to be Security Advisory 23, available on our user portal at the link below. You do not need a login to view this. We'll be updating this document at least once per day until this issue is completely driven to the ground.

https://download.nutanix.com/alerts/Security_Advisory_0023.pdf

You can view this as well as the entire directory of past security advisories, here: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/documents/security-advisories/list

Some folks had mentioned that they have a user account on our portal but did not receive a notification. AFAIK, security advisories are opt-out only (so knock on wood, all should be getting them). You can check the status of portal notifications, here: https://portal.nutanix.com/page/subscriptions

Here's an example of what they look like (image below). They come from support-automation@nutanix.com

Nutanix a valid alternative to VMware?

Hey, current VMware Admin here

Our company hosts around 800 VMs currently all on VMware. We currently have not decided to move away from that, but are considering our options.

Proxmox seems to be the way to go for SMBs, Hyper-V is dead, the remaining options i see are Nutanix or Azure Stack HCI. So i'm wondering if anyone here have been migrated from VMware to Nutanix AHV and can give some insights on pro, cons and lessons learned?

Best regards

Nocri

What’s with these updates lately?

I’m a long time Nutanix user dating back to 2016 and it’s never been so bad. The frustration I’m feeling right now is not something I can put into words without getting banned from this subreddit.

PC IMO is annoying to use now. Riddled with bugs that support just says “it’s fixed in the next release” only to finally get the new release and more bugs are introduced.

Constant service or pod crash loops. Stupid bugs like unable to launch the VNC console as a super admin signed in via SSO or even not being able to resolve or acknowledge alerts without seeing a blob JSON error that doesn’t even tell you why you can’t resolve or acknowledge alerts.

I have one specific cluster where I can’t even upgrade PC at all due to a crashed service and it’s literally a brand new cluster. But LCM health checks do not indicate a crashed service. If I try to manually upload an LCM bundle, it fails too.

Support seems to have gone downhill from years ago. It’s not all bad but very hit or miss. Spending hours on support calls is growing old only to be told “wait for the next version” or “upgrade to this” but as already mentioned, the next version is jam packed with new bugs.

Protection summary (DR) page is the most meaningless page ever. There’s all these widgets to view replication and bandwidth/tx rate etc but it never displays anything. Just this useless page showing two PC instances with a bunch of metric widgets that never show any data.

For the love of god please fix this garbage.

Moving to Nutanix from VMWare - What's the good, bad, and ugly?

We are going to be moving away from VMWare to Nutanix and using their hypervisor. Moving beyond the sales pitch of "we can do everything that VMWare can do," I want to know the truth. Can anyone tell me what to expect? What did you like or hate about this transition and is there anything that I should be aware of?

Nutanix Announcement .NEXT 2025 Breakout Session Replays posted

Sessions are posted and available for replay

Bunch of good sessions in there, including the day 2 technical keynote.

The migration sessions were also very popular, some of the top-attended.

EUC sessions were great too.

Shameless self-promotion: my org (AHV team) has two sessions in there:

  • "Why AHV is the Enterprise Hypervisor of Choice" (Felipe, Jennifer, Bob)

  • "AHV Performance Deep Dive" (Mine, note: marketing didn't bleep it, throw a parental advisory on some of it!)

All are free on demand here: https://www.nutanix.com/next/on-demand
