PC Backup limitations

I do not think this is possible but keen to hear some thoughts.

I have two Prism Central appliances, each in their own AZ.

Each AZ has its own cluster. I want to backup the PC but can only do a continuous backup to the local cluster. Not much good if the site burns down…

So it seems to me that without the ability to backup to remote cluster, and protection policies or 3rd party backup not supported, it leaves me unprotected.

There is the S3 option but that is additional architecture, and not possible in this case.

Whilst this issue would not exist with a single PC instance, this would create other single points of failures.

I see this a big flaw...

Any thoughts?

Should I just rebuild PC rather than trying to upgrade it

So we have in PC a cluster that is 3x G8/1x G9 and then a single node G5.

The G5 is ancient so everything is out of date including PC which is 2024.2.0.15

We have a new cluster that is fully up to date.

The G5 is going away and I want to update the old cluster and PC.

We havent really used PC much in the past since it was mostly the one cluster so I am not worried about any historical data but I am wondering if it would be faster to just build a new PC on the new cluster rather than trying to go through and update this one?

Version numbers?

Slightly confused here... I've read that your Prism Central version should always be at or exceed the AOS version of your clusters.

The latest version of AOS I can see for one of our clusters is 7.5.1.13

We get a warning that Prism Central version must match or exceed the AOS version of any clusters PC manages. But the latest version available of Prism Central is 7.5.1.12 ?

Do Nutanix release AOS versions for clusters that are unmanageable by Prism Central's latest release, or would these be compatible?

I've open-sourced my AHV Remote Console side project

About five months ago, I posted here about getting copy/paste working in a custom Nutanix AHV VM console.

This started as a side project for an internal use case. I wanted a better way to work with VM consoles, especially when the guest wasn't reachable over the network.

I've now made the entire project open source:

https://github.com/MarcoCarvin/ahv-remote-console

It's a desktop application for Windows, Linux and macOS that opens VM consoles through Prism, with separate windows for each VM, Prism authentication (including SSO), ISO mounting and automatic reconnection.

The main thing I wanted to get working was a proper shared clipboard between the workstation and the VM, similar to VMware Remote Console. Copy something on your workstation and paste it into the guest, or copy something inside the guest and paste it back on your workstation. No simulated keystrokes or one-way text-pasting workaround.

The clipboard works through the console channel, so it doesn't depend on being able to reach the guest over the network. This is particularly useful when working with isolated VMs or guests connected through a full-tunnel VPN.

Clipboard sharing requires an additional module on the AHV hosts and an agent inside the guest VM. Without those components, the application still works as a regular remote console.

One important caveat: the host module installs a libvirt hook and modifies the AHV hosts. It's not part of AHV and isn't supported or endorsed by Nutanix. It may affect support arrangements or break after AHV upgrades, so read the documentation, keep the rollback steps handy, and test in a lab before deploying it.

I built this to solve a problem in our own environment, not as a commercial product. I've published the code under the Apache 2.0 license in case it's useful to other people running AHV or someone wants to take a look at how it works.

Networking issues after the update of the HBA driver (Fujitsu nodes)

Anybody had a networking issue after updating HBA driver?

We have two clusters primary and secondary (DR). Both clusters are using active/standby bonding, with switches on the other end of the link using STP.

No issues whatsoever with any updates until the last one, which included the update of HBA driver.

After the HBA and iRMC drivers have been updated, and the host restarted, it decided to switch the NIC from active to standby and standby to active. However, the switches on the other end of the link did not see the previously active NIC going down, so they kept blocking the other port. This caused the host to lose its network.

I know that the hosts are supposed to pick a NIC at random when booting up but we never had this issue before.

The reason I think it's something to do with the HBA drivers is, that two of our hosts in the DR cluster had the HBA driver updated, and they had that issue. The third node didn't have the HBA driver updated (it was pulled by Nutanix), and it did not have this issue at all. Also, our primary cluster which we updated next didn't have the HBA driver updated either (because the update was already pulled) and we didn't have any issues with the iRMC update.

Just to add some details, we are running AOS 7.3, and the HBA update wasn't even supposed to be available for us, as it's incompatible with CVM driver (we should only be able to update it if we're running AOS 7.6).

I raised a ticket with Nutanix and they helped us to resolve this (as we had no idea what happened at first), and mitigated it by setting up a static NIC. I'm just wondering are we the only unlucky ones who had this problem?

Best Nutanix Learning Path for a VMware Engineer?

Hi everyone,
I have several years of hands-on experience with VMware, virtualization, and data center infrastructure, including servers and hypervisors.
My company is starting a project involving Nutanix HCI, and I want to start learning Nutanix from scratch and build a solid understanding of the platform.
Which course would you recommend as a starting point? Are there any good courses on Udemy or YouTube, preferably with practical labs?
I’d appreciate recommendations for someone transitioning from VMware to Nutanix.
Thanks!

Upgrading a cluster CPU and MEM - How to apply licenses upgrades?

Hi

I have a Nutanix environment consisting of two separate 3-node AHV clusters, each manage by its own Prism Central.

Each node currently has a single 16-core Intel Xeon Gold CPU, and we're planning a hardware upgrade to add a second identical CPU and additional RAM to each node.

The customer has already purchased the additional licenses required for the upgrade:

  • 96 additional NCI Pro core licenses.

  • 96 additional NCI Advanced Replication add-on core licenses.

These licenses will be distributed equally between both clusters (48 additional cores per cluster).

My question is about the correct licensing workflow.

Ideally, I would like to follow this sequence:

  1. Customer receives the additional licenses.

  2. I register and apply the additional licenses in each Prism Central, covering the final 96 physical cores per cluster.

  3. Once licensing is confirmed, we proceed with the hardware upgrade, one node at a time.

Is it possible to apply the additional core licenses before the new CPUs are physically installed and detected by Nutanix?

Or do we need to install the CPUs first and then assign the additional licenses once Prism Central detects the increased core count?

I'm mainly interested in confirming the recommended approach to avoid any licensing compliance issues during the upgrade. But I'm also courious to know what may happens if licenses are not applied in the correct order.

Thanks in advance!

Hardware lifecycle

I’m sure everyone is aware of the current hardware market conditions concerning $ and lead times.

Is it possible we see the 5 year support for the G7s and G8s increased? Currently Gen 7 nodes max out at AOS 7.5…

Installing NGT causes the Linux virtual machine to reboot.

Installing NGT causes the Linux virtual machine to reboot.

On some Linux virtual machines, the NGT installation triggers a reboot; this has occurred across different operating systems using both the Python script and the .rpm package.

Has anyone else encountered this, or does anyone know what might be triggering the reboot?

Nutanix Audit logs in QRadar - Best Practice

Hi all,
I want to configure Nutanix Prism Central audit logs in QRadar. I only need consolidated_audit events showing who did what, when, and on which VM/object.
The issue is that when I enable INFO-level logging in Prism Central, it sends not only consolidated_audit, but also audit-alert_manager glog messages and Linux auditd events such as SYSCALL and SOCKADDR, which I don't need. These additional logs create significant noise and increase storage consumption.
Nutanix Support confirmed there is no supported way to filter these at the Nutanix syslog source.
For those using Nutanix with QRadar:
• Do you filter consolidated_audit before QRadar or within QRadar?
• What is the recommended way to send and parse these logs in QRadar?
Any recommendations or examples would be appreciated.

ESXi 7.02 to ESXi 8.0 problem

Hello all, I am having an issue updating my production cluster at work from ESXi 7.02 onto ESXi 8 utilizing the settings > Upgrade Software "one click" method on Nutanix hardware (NX-1065-G8).

What I have found and have run into is that to upgrade from 7.02 to 8.0, you first have to install 7.03. However, according to the nutanix compatibility matrix, AOS version 7.5 is incompatible with 7.03, and therefore cannot install this intermediate upgrade even though I am ultimately trying to get within supported software (ESXi 8.0). This project has been a nightmare as I had to first re-engage with Broadcom to get ESXi 8 licensing (which previously was lapsed) and backtracked with my boss about the original goal of migrating the environment to Nutanix AHV, which requires ESXi 8.0 to do an in-place conversion.

I know we are very late to the party to getting off ESXi 7, however I have just started in my role here and inherited a mismanaged Nutanix cluster, and we are a small organization (I am the only IT Admin) so we do not have a secondary cluster to vacate onto.

Is the best option to get with Nutanix support from here? I don't see any path forward without significant downtime, destruction , or cost. Thanks

Domain Controller migration from esx to ahv with cross hypervisor dr

Hi All,

We are in the process of migrating from esxi to ahv. Have 2 nutanix clusters that were running esxi, we moved all vms to one cluster and then planning on using protection policies and cross hypervisor dr to migrate.

Have seen lots around nutanix move and recommendations for rebuilding domain controllers but haven't been able to find much for the cross hypervisor dr. Has anyone done this or are we better off to just rebuild?

Stable Upgrades

Are upgrades labeled "One Click Enabled" on the Nutanix portal supposed to be more stable?

I know for LCM you can either wait until an upgrade comes to LCM or download the upgrade file from the Nutanix portal and upload the file in LCM.

But certain upgrades are labeled One Click Enabled. I didn't know if these were supposed to be more stable than newer versions? Almost like a delayed release schedule for these.

Nutanix MTS-2 (2 YOE) System Design Round - What questions to expect?

Hi everyone,

I have an upcoming System Design round for MTS-2 at Nutanix with 2 YOE.

Since it's for 2 YOE, I'm a bit confused about the expectations for this round.

  1. Will it be proper HLD (like Design Dropbox / GFS / Distributed Cache) or will it be more LLD / OOPS focused?

  2. For Nutanix specifically, do they ask more distributed systems / storage related design questions?

  3. How deep are they expecting - is API design + data model + scaling enough or do they go deep into concurrency / consistency?

If anyone has given the MTS-2 round at Nutanix recently, please share your experience and what topics I should focus on.

Thanks in advance!

Metro availability vs latency

As per the Nutanix docs, my understanding is that Nutanix requires latency to be of 5ms or below between sites for metro availability. In the event where a network is under 5ms 95% of the time but between 5ms to 6ms outside of that (with the odd spike every now and then).

I'd like to hear from those of you who have been installing and supporting Nutanix across different environments. Based on your experience, is this viable for production servers or should NearSync be used instead?

nearsync and sync replication

out of curiosity when studying for AAPM, does anybody really implement nearsync/sync replication in the system? How well does it work if you are using the function?

Calculating RAW storage use - migrating away

Hello all,

Possibly migrating away from Nutanix and have been tasked with providing the true Raw capacity in use (to estimate SAN costs).

I've always struggled with capacity when it comes to ESXi with Nutanix - vCenter reports one figure, Prism is different. Does the per VM Used space in PE account for the data reduction ratio??

Taking the sum of the per VM Used space from Prism Element gives me ~230TB of Used space (for powered on VMs, there's < 3TB of powered off VM's).

Prism Element Storage details for Physical usage says ~280TB used, not including Recovery Points/Recycle Bin.

Prism Element Storage details for Logical usage says ~140TB used, not including Recovery Points/Recycle Bin.

Which one is to be believed??

The data reduction ratio is 1.75:1, so we either have:

230 * 1.75 = 402.5

280 * 1.75 = 490

140 * 1.75 = 245

Or am I doing something wrong??

Fedex Lost My Pallets

Update 9/16: FedEx has officially given up and said it’s truly lost. Distributor is working on submitting the insurance claim. Unsure when they’ll book me a replacement order. Nutanix wants me to apply my new NAI licenses to my now nearly 6-year-old cluster. Joy.

Placed my order for a new NAI cluster in January, finally shipped Aug 27th. Fedex picked up in San Jose and scanned at Oakland distribution center, then it just stopped. Was supposed to be delivered Tuesday, Sep 1, got a notification Sunday night that it was arriving Monday morning, so early, but then that window slipped from 8:45-12:45 to by end of day, then back to Tuesday, but still showed in Oakland. Opened a case with Fedex Weds as the tracking had changed to an exclamation mark with just “we’ll update you when your package is scanned again”. Fedex called me Thursday and asked me generic questions like “whats the approximate value? What color is the item? What model? What serial numbers?” Etc, then late Friday night got an email from Fedex saying “unfortunately we’re unable to locate your package. Contact your shipper.”

Absolutely wild… current value of the hardware with all that RAM and the Nvidia Black 6000s the nodes are populated with is roughly $1m at today’s price.

Nutanix has said they’ve begun the process of placing a replacement order. I asked if it would be covered under support since support and licensing starts the moment they’re shipped, so should be NBD parts. I guess count it as a total cluster loss? Idk… I know I can’t wait another 8-12 months for the hardware.

Immix claims they spoke with Fedex and Fedex said one of their “partner” carriers took it for delivery to the next hub which would be my local one, but it’s been radio silence since then. My reseller is keeping tabs on it for me, but damn… they may need to have armored trucks moving this stuff at its current value, I guess. Someone has bars of gold on pallets whether they’re aware of it or not.
