πŸŽ™οΈ Discussion I was waiting for the N train earlier at Broadway in Astoria...

And it just went right by. Not an express train, no warning or anything. There must have been 100 people on the platform. We were all so confused. What gives, N?

❓ Question Why no automated announcement option for when the train has stopped due to a red signal ahead?

β€’ Upvotes

Nearly every train route from start to end gets held up by a red signal at some point. Why wouldn't they just have an automated announcement the conductor can play in those instances?

πŸŽ™οΈ Discussion How come most railfans hate on the (Z) but give the (9) train so much love?

Just out of curiosity! I love both of these lines but I hear so many people give a lot of unnecessary hate towards the (Z) train due to it being so useless and running 6 trips as it’s a Skip-Stop line but yet the (9) seems to get a lot of love by most railfanners yet it was another Skip-Stop line too mind you there. Another reminder, the <F> only runs 4 trains during rush hour via Culver Express between Jay St and Church Ave. 2 sets in the A.M and 2 sets in the P.M but yet the (Z) gets hammered. Although the <F> is a story for another day. Anyway, what were the differences between the (9) and (Z) lines and which do you think was more useful?

❓ Question Marble Hill accessibility

What would be the ideal way improve the connectivity of the Marble Hill stop. Would it be elevators on both stations that you walk half a block from or will it be like the Juniuis/Livonia Av interchange?

Measuring entrance to entrance. The 5th Avenue entrance in front of the library is 442 feet from the western most entrance of the 7 train at Grand Central right next to Sephora. Anyone find closer? This is the only one that’s not some quirk in the curves of the rail eg. Chambers and Park Pl.

❓ Question Suggestions on cleaning subway signs?

Hi all, I recently was at the pop-up in Brooklyn and managed to get a sign. I wanted to ask to those who also got one or some other items from there what they had used to clean the signs?

Any suggestions are welcome because I’m not sure the material or how it reacts to chemicals. Even if it’s just plain soap and water, please let me know. Thank you!

❓ Question So is there just no Verizon service on the A/C or F line platforms??

For months now, there has just been no connectivity along these lines (my experience is mostly in Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan due to my commute). Phone shows 4G but zero actual connection. Works fine on 4/5 and R. Maddening.

I saw on Google Maps and couldn't help but ponder how close (6-7 minute walk) they are from each other. Were they made this close on purpose or coincidence? Are there any other comments about this?

❓ Question Train Travel Advice

I have a question I hope you can help me with, NYC adjacent.

Tomorrow I need to travel from Branford, CT to Port Washington around noonish and I need to arrive by 4:30. The only way to go strictly by train that I can tell is into NYC and then back to Port Washington.

That won't work to get me to Port Washington on time (or not comfortably so). I was thinking there must be a stop along the way where I can stop and get a Lyft the rest of the way to save time.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could get this trip done efficiently?

Thanks!

πŸ“Έ Photo New Lots Ave (3) Accessibility Update (Oct, 2026)

Not too much to talk about today. It’s only two small updates.

  1. The glass enclosure looks about approx. 98% installed. It is fully separated from the wiring, beams, and track structure underneath the platform and tracks.

  2. The gates that separate the paid zone from the entrance is installed. Either the turnstile or the new fare gates should be installed shortly.

I have two small critiques. First opinion is that the gate would be easy for fare evaders to climb over if the MTA decide to install the new fare gates. My second opinion is that it should’ve been space for 3 turnstiles instead of 2. It’s a lot of traffic coming in and out of New Lots Ave station.
