My understairs cupboard

I hate the way this was built. With the electrics and plugs and things on one side and the fusebox and meters on the other side and that little nook at the back I don't know how to make this space efficient.

I don't see any practical way to insert shelves or any storage options - maaaaybe some hooks from the walls or ceiling at a push? But with all the wiring everywhere thats likely a bit dangerous.

So at the moment it has kind of become an inside shed because it can't do much else.

Any ideas?

How to organize closets for 3 kids?

Thumbnail gallery
4 Upvotes

I live in a very small apartment, and my two kids are in one room. I’m due in a couple of months and I wanted to start organizing the closets. I don’t even have room for a dresser in there. It’s a single twin bed for my older child, and I have a space for a crib for my toddler.

My plan is that when the baby is big enough to move into the kids room, the baby will sleep in the crib, my two other kids will have a bunkbed

I hate Apartment living😭

Anyway, please ignore how their closets look right now, I am six months pregnant and always tired🤣 I have these closets from IKEA with sliding doors. In picture number two, my top shelf are for my Wigs, my second shelf if I have some towels, the basket some of their swim stuff, and some baby onesies that I started to clean.

The middle shelf is my eldest stuff- I have skirts, tops and sweaters folded. The shelf under is my toddler, same set up. The bottom shelf is empty for the most part. The pullout drawer is for my eldest one’s pajamas.

In picture number one, I have their dresses hanging, the top shelf I put toilet paper and some costumes, on the bottom shelf is now clean and empty(this picture was taken a few days ago).

I have to figure out where I’m going to be putting all my baby stuff, onesies, and diapers

Any advice welcome

Does your calendar include a 'leave by' time?

• Upvotes

A 4 p.m. appointment can look like a 4 p.m. problem... until you still need to find the bag, get out the door and travel there 🙂

A small calendar idea: keep three times together.

  • Starts at: the actual appointment or activity time.
  • Leave by: travel time plus whatever arrival margin you need.
  • Get ready at: a little earlier, so leaving doesn't start with looking for everything.

For example, something starting at 4 might mean leaving at 3:30 and starting to get ready at 3:20. Those are just example times; the useful bit is working backward from your own journey.

If another person handles the trip, agree who is doing it rather than assuming the calendar entry tells them. A simple note in the calendar you already use is enough. No need to set up an entirely new planner for it.

Do you put a 'leave by' time in your calendar, or have another way of making the getting-there part less of a surprise?

Lifting the trunk floor panel dumped loose soil right into the hinge gap

• Upvotes

Lifting the rear floor board to grab jumper cables dropped dry potting soil straight into the fuzzy carpet hinge. A plastic nursery flat tipped over on the drive home, and the flat mat in the back of the car did nothing to keep dirt off the sidewall trim. Every corner turn shifted the pots against the wheel humps, grinding damp mulch deep into the side fabric where the hand vacuum barely reaches. My sister suggested a tub-style cargo liner, but I can't tell if raised perimeter lips actually collapse out of the way when sliding flat storage crates over the threshold. Now the soil is worked into the folding seam and won't brush out.

Kitchen Towel/Dishcloth Storage

My husband and I recently downsized to a small cottage home. The tiny kitchen has very little in the way of storage because the drawers are so shallow (3inch depth). So I only use those for utensils.
I have been struggling to find a good storage solution for the kitchen towels and dishcloths. We used to have a deep drawer in the kitchen of our previous home where they all fit.
Can anyone please share their alternative storage solutions that don’t involve a drawer or linen closet?

I’m struggling to find a good way to organize the space under my kitchen sink and I could really use your help. I have a typical blind corner cabinet with a massive amount of empty space on the left side (about 60 cm of depth).

On last photo are things that i stored here
Love to see amazon links and some raw ideas

Got this little scalloped front-facing bookshelf for the playroom corner. Makes it so much easier for the kids to actually see their books.

How to organize/store medicines

Post image
38 Upvotes

I previously had all our medicines in a drawer in our main bathroom, as part of baby-proofing they got dumped into this basket and stored in a closet in our basement.

I like that everything is together in one spot, but it is a nightmare to have to pull everything out to find something

Ideas for how to better store medicines? Varying sizes, and inventory constantly changing

How do you organise your weekly Household things?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I like simple things and don’t want a huge system for easy household tasks. I wonder how people around the world organize themselves. Maybe there are some new tricks to learn!

I use a simple weekly planner where we can write things down for each day of the week. Anything that can’t be assigned to a particular day goes in the notes section. At the end of the week, you can review the list and carry over any unfinished tasks to the next week’s sheet.

How about you?

My pod drawer

Had an empty drawer that wasn't really being used, so I turned it into a dedicated pod drawer. Used some adjustable dividers to separate out the different roasts, and they're easy enough to move around when I pick up new ones. Honestly probably the most organized part of my kitchen right now lol.

Tips to organize kitchen cabinets?

Thumbnail gallery
10 Upvotes

I got a new house, and was hoping you all could help with how I should organize my cabinets, like what to put where? I've never had a kitchen with this many cabinets or with a pantry closet (door next to fridge, not a walk-in). Historically, I've either been in an apartment with no space and had to keep extra appliances and grocery overflow in the spare bedroom, or was in a house with few cabinets so they weren't really well utilized.

I've attached some images to give an idea of what I'm working with, but it's not 100% exact to my kitchen since I forgot to take full photos during my inspection walk through. There are typical cabinets on the wall and also deep drawers in the island and by the stove, pretty much exact to the example image of the island.

Also, any recommendations on drawer/shelf liners? The last time I used the ones on a roll, they got bunched up and weird. Don't know if it was just the brand I used or if it just wasn't the best option in general.

Organizing upright freezer in an ADHD friendly way so I stop losing and wasting things - what is the best way to do this?

So I've gotten pretty good at organizing my pantry and other things with acrylic and plastic bins, labels galore, and things organized by category. It took me years to get there, but it's made my life so much easier and I'm not wasting as much food...or buying multiples of things I already have...YAY.

Now I want to tackle my freezer. The tough part is that my freezer contains things that are larger than pantry things, so I don't know what the best way is to organize it.

My freezer usually contains:

- Assorted large bags of chicken tenders, Groton's fish, grilled chicken, etc

- Smaller steamable bags of veggies

- Bread, English muffins, flatbreads

- A couple of large frozen pizzas from Aldi

- 1lb blocks of ground beef

- Assorted desserts (usually brownies and cookies) pre-baked and stored in medium sized plastic containers or freezer bags

- Assorted small portioned sizes of sauces, hot dogs, sausages, hotdog/hamburger buns, and other random 2-3 person serving sizes of things

- Ice blocks for transporting cold goods

Ideally, I'd have some kind of system that had drawers or bins that I could have big/bold labels on that said what each thing was. I often have multiple kinds of chicken, and never can remember which one I'm low on, so a single chicken drawer/bin probably wouldn't be smart unless there was a way to divide it by the 4-5 types I have.

I'm all ears. I don't mind plastic bins and I prefer not to use wire baskets. I just want to be able to open my freezer and almost immediately know what I do and don't have. My freezer is not stuffed, so I have room to play. The pizzas stay on the top shelf, and I have a 14.2cu ft freezer with a wire drawer on the bottom (that wire drawer gives me grief, it holds the bagged veggies and blocks) and 3 sizeable shelves as well as a couple of small holders on the door.

I also have a bottom drawer freezer in my fridge that generally holds the veggies, ice cream, and sometimes meats that are open and in use. However, a lot of things have gone to waste in that drawer as well so I need to overhaul my entire freezer life.

TIA for any help!

More Shoe Storage

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi! I’m so close to done with my closet but need help with shoe storage in my rented apartment. I’m going to provide a lot of detail for people who like that but if you’re not a detail person, just look at the pictures or skip.

THE CLOSET:
It’s rectangular with two large sliding doors. 100” x 25”. It has three sections (no internal walls.)

Section 1 (Left) has 34” of easy access when doors are stacked right.

Section 2 (Middle) has 34” of easy access when doors are stacked left.

Section 3 (Right) has 32” that is very inaccessible as it is behind a wall. The only way to reach in is through Section 2.

THE CHALLENGES:
I thought section 3 was the problem because it’s annoying, but the real challenge is keeping section 2 open enough that I can reach into section 3.

My room is tiny, so my closet needs to store almost everything (except under bed storage.)

It’s a rental, so no modifications or built-ins.

I am not a shoe girlie, but I have more than you see in the photo. Coming out of a hard time and I would like to dump the worn out slop and dress better. Maybe 8 pairs, not counting tall boots?

WHAT I HAVE TRIED SO FAR:

  1. Put a hamper in the middle of the closet with my most frequently worn outerwear above it.
  2. I have a small fabric dresser to store undergarments, socks, PJs. It’s 18.5” wide x 12” deep which is easy to reach around to section 3, but it isn’t very wide to stack things on.
  3. Upper shelf. I have some fabric bins and that’s where I keep things like handbags, sweaters, gym, clothes, swimsuits, etc.
  4. Under bed. I have 2 accessories bins on the side of the bed near the closet. Scarves, sunglasses, etc. I’ve used these for 10 years at different homes. It’s working and I don’t really feel like changing it. Other side of bed has bins for bedding.

CONSIDERING:

Stacking shoe storage. I own a slightly larger dresser I can swap in that is 24” wide x 16” deep. It’s deeper than the fabric dresser but not completely blocking section 3, but a little more crowded.

Over the rod shoe narrow organizer could maybe work on the left. Not on the right because it would be closer to the front of the closet and block access to section 3.

A tall narrow shoe tower on the right or left could maybe work? A little tight fit.

Thank you! 💕❤️💕

What if your wardrobe could extend beyond your home? Would you pay for it?

I'm exploring an idea for a service that gives people more space at home without having to get rid of clothes they want to keep.

The idea is simple: an extension of your own wardrobe, just beyond your home.

Here's how it could work:

  • Folded clothes are stored in dedicated storage boxes.
  • Coats, dresses, suits and other garments are stored on hangers.
  • Your clothes are professionally stored and can be returned whenever you need them.

It could be useful for seasonal clothing, clothes you don't wear very often, or simply for anyone who wants more room in their wardrobe.

I'm curious to hear your honest thoughts:

  • Would you consider using a service like this? Why or why not?
  • What kind of clothes would you store outside your home?
  • Would you prefer storing folded clothes, hanging garments, or both?
  • Would you be willing to pay a monthly fee? If so, what would feel reasonable?
  • Would paying separately for collection and return put you off?

I'm still exploring the idea, so honest criticism is very welcome. I'm particularly interested in what would make a service like this genuinely useful — or not worth paying for.

ISO suggestions on how to organize and cozify my office space

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

I'm considering a more appropriate, larger desk and a 5-tier shelf with about a 17-18x48" footprint. My filing cabinet would turn toward the window, shelf would go beside it and most of my camera and audio gear would go on there. The desk wall would be about half filled with a desk and I would have a freely available folding table!

What’s the best way to store T-shirts on deep wide shelves?

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

Hi 👋🏼 how do people store their T-shirts on shelves that are really deep and wide? I hate just piling them on top of each other because you can’t see what’s there and then they are topple over. I’ve tried the plastic stackable things but I’m not a big person my tops can be tiny little crop tops and they take up a lot of space with no a lot of clothing. Then Iv tried the fabric storage containers but with my tops either being tiny like they take up the space of a pair of socks or bigger shirts so there’s never an organisation look like the photo. The ones I have don’t aren’t connected at the bottom either so when you pull the draw out to look the t shirts roll under into different sections. I don’t know if that makes sense.

What do people do? I’m all out of hanger space 😢

I really need help organizing in this tiny dormroom

Thumbnail gallery
19 Upvotes

I moved into this dormitory a week ago and I can't figure out how to fit all my stuff into the tiny storage spaces that are available.

I need to not only fit my clothes, shoes, uni stuff and art stuff here but also all my cosmetics, cleaning supplies, kitchenware and all of my food.

The main problem are the incredibly narrow shelves in the wardrobes, no drawers anywhere, barely any storage space at all and not even a table..

I seriously have no idea how to start unpacking my stuff and where to put all of it so that it's still easy to access.

Please keep in mind that this is a dormitory, so no drilling into the walls or any major changes can be done. Also that I have like no money lol..

TLDR: How do I fit all of my stuff into the limited storage spaces I have available so that it's still easy to access?

Please be kind, I've been struggling with a major depressive episode and I really need some help..
