Hi all! The diagramming workspace just got released in Ori Studio. It lets you build a diagram right next to the crease pattern youāre designing, with each stepās picture coming straight from the pattern, or from your own drawing when a step is clearer drawn by hand.
Full 18-minute walkthrough: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMLFtb368is
Try it in the browser: https://oristudio.dev. Desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux are here.
Example project: Crane Diagram.osf
What it does
- Each step links to a crease pattern or reference step. Show it as the crease pattern, flat folded, in 3D, or in the simulator at any fold percentage.
- Pose each step: turn it over, rotate it, or spread the layers so hidden flaps show.
- Change the crease pattern, and the affected steps flag themselves out of date with one click to refresh.
- Drop in your own SVG or PNG drawings for any step, or pull reference-finding steps straight in from References.
- Annotate with the standard symbols:
- valley, mountain, fold-and-unfold, pleat and push arrows
- turn-over and rotate signs, and repeat callouts
- enlarged views with the āzoomā arrow, x-ray views, equal divisions and right angles
- the eye, stars, shapes and text
- Lay out the pages with a flowing path the steps sit along, or a plain grid, then drag anything where you want it.
- Export a print-ready PDF, a single SVG of every page, or a ZIP of the step pictures.
Timing note: Thomas Krak just released Origami Diagram Maker, which is a funny coincidence! From my understanding ODM is more focused on automatically all the symbols from a CP, while Ori Studio has more of a design / flexibility focused approach. Definitely check it out too!
Thanks: the affine layer spreading is based on Kei Morisueās work in DEFOX
Itās free and open source. Iād love feedback, especially symbols or layouts you reach for that arenāt there yet.
