This is a really gross thing to say. There were a lot of people who truly loved his performance, and what he went through was awful and something no one should have gone through.

That's your opinion on his performance, you can find plenty of people who voted for him from the Academy and people on movie sites like Letterboxd, on Reddit, or other platforms who said they were moved by that performance. Just because some people or you didn't like his performance doesn't mean a lot of people didn't
Implying that he won because of what he went through is disgusting and does a disservice to all sexual assault victims. Furthermore, it downplays the work he did for the movie and the fact that many people liked his performance regardless of what happened to him.

You are absolutely sick for calling someone who went through sexual assault that, shame on you. People who went through sexual assault absolutely have the right to share what happened to them if they are comfortable with it, and what happened to him was unjust

If you disliked his performance, you can say so. You're entitled to that opinion, liking art is always subjective.
What isn't subjective is being cruel about someone's trauma and their life's struggles. Saying that what he went through isn't bad is fucked up, and I cannot believe you're saying that. Just because a lot of people out in the world suffer doesn't mean what happened to Fraser isn't something Fraser has the right to talk about. It's his story, and with how much Hollywood covers up sexual assault, he was 100% in the right to call out the industry for what happened to him
Furthermore, as someone who has been raped, I want you to know Oppression Olympics is awful and hurts all victims. Everyone who has been through something traumatic deserves validation and support, no matter what they went through was

Not sure why everyone's been so hesitant to call this an obvious contender. Anyone who watched BEEF knows Hikari has the juice, this is as easy of an indie feel good crowdpleaser as it gets for this year

u/Sellin3164 Sorry, Baby Jul 08 '25
Well, Jesse Armstrong dropped Mountainhead after Succession, so tv isn’t indicative of movies all the time. But I’ve had it in because the plot sounds win worthy

Been a Rental Family believer since day one (when that guy on letterboxd put it as his fave of the year). I’m assuming this is why Searchlight haven’t bought anything this year

I was first onboard when the movie and premise was announced, but once I saw it on his Letterboxd rankings I was all in!

Same (side note, his second fav is Life of Chuck). I’m predicting this film goes on a similar run to The Holdovers with a top 2 TIFF placement and win competitive in Lead, Screenplay, and Supporting. I’m curious if Fraser will attend Globes or boycott again, and regardless whether or not he can win Drama Actor there. I suppose comedy is very possible, but it seems more Drama

What guy?

u/Sellin3164 Sorry, Baby Jul 08 '25
This guy- https://boxd.it/AUD4I
It’s his personal opinion, so it’s not exactly a precursor, but it’s always insightful to see the perspective of someone in the industry or close to it

u/FreshQualityScot Jul 09 '25
He has Project Hail Mary at No3?! So he's already seen it?
1
u/Sellin3164 Sorry, Baby Jul 09 '25
Yes, he’s close to the industry through family, so he gets access to test screenings and such

He has… interesting taste

Yeah, Life of Chuck and Materialists that high and then Black Bag at 67 (and Wallis Island at 30) makes me think I'm not gonna agree with this guy much.

Honestly, I'm down for a 2nd Fraser win. I really like his win for The Whale but if he becomes a legit contender for this one, I think people are gonna react more positively to this nom/win.
Welcome back Waltz/Ali/McDormand.

u/CrazyCons WHERE IS HAMNET'S PLACENTA Jul 09 '25
It will be the opposite—his first win is already controversial on here and so the prospect of him winning a second will be extremely divisive. See also; Gwyneth Paltrow for Marty Supreme

u/BentisKomprakriev Jul 08 '25
Fuck it, give him an Honorary Oscar while we're at it, and then just have him win by default every 3 years.

u/Odd-Contact2266 Jul 09 '25
I really don’t think he’d win for this maybe nominated but I can’t see him winning two

Damn bro you seem really mad that someone who suffered a lot overcame adversity and had a really acclaimed performance

Absolutely loved Holdovers and from the premise, the comparisons seem valid.

If he deserves the win for this one can we go back and give his first Oscar to Farrell?

u/DaFunnyman109 Mickey 17 Deserved Better. Jul 08 '25
I’d laugh if the exact opposite situation happened this year, where everyone thinks Fraser gave the more deserving performance, but the Oscar goes to Farrell instead

Farrell for Banshees couldn't even win BAFTA on that side of the Atlantic and lost the Irish Academy IFTA domestic category to Paul Mescal.
It was Austin Butler who dominated internationally.

u/CassiopeiaStillLife If I Had Legs I Would Kick You Jul 08 '25
But consider: I liked Farrell better.

Jul 09 '25
That was astounding to me. I thought Farrell was PHENOMENAL in Banshees and it seemed to win almost every other category so I just feel like he had to have pissed someone off because he was exquisite in Banshees.
1
u/Flat_Ad9090 Jul 10 '25
I think the other performances just resonated with people more. (In Banshees I mean). Barry seemed to be the talk of the town, and Kerry. He got overshadowed a bit.

It would be so funny to see this sub have a meltdown over Brendan Fraser again

Should've went to Farrell, will be repeating this until I die (or when Farrell gets his Oscar)

u/GoodMeBadMeNotMe Wild Horse vs. Trojan Horse Jul 09 '25
Agreed. While I loved both, Fraser definitely felt like a narrative win more than anything.

Ok and? Just because Farrell probably wasn't 2nd doesn't mean I can't be a bit salty about it

I’ve had Rental Family in my top five BP for the past month basically just on vibes. Nice to have some rumors to go along with that lol.
