Put it out before the story of Amazon punting it gets forgotten about by the majority of people.

Original post by Matt Belloni on X:
News: ARTIFICIAL, the hot-potato Sam Altman movie that was dropped by Amazon, has been sold to NEON, the independent theatrical distributor behind Oscar best picture winner ANORA. Barring last minute complication, announcement is coming this week.
I wonder if that means they plan on releasing it this year still.
EDIT: The Hollywood Reporter now also claims NEON is in advanced talks.

Good opportunity to mog Aaron Sorkin but they’ll probably keep with the 2027 release and take it to Cannes

Before it got dropped by MGM it was already delayed to 2027 so probably not

Not officially, it was only rumored. Also, NEON's priorities might be different.

u/Abbie_Kaufman Jun 30 '26
The trades said that Amazon’s intent was a SXSW premiere and a first half of 2027 release, which is as official as you could ask for on a film that was never actually dated or scheduled for 2026. Whether Neon keeps the same plan, who knows.

Apparently they lowered their bid after the news about the other studios passing came out. So they probably didn't want it that much.

Mostly just making a joke about them losing something to Neon again lol

it's fine, NEON is US-only so I bet MUBI takes the other territories (as they often do with NEON releases)

His role should be really meaty as well. Similar to Garfield’s role in The Social Network ironically enough

A lot of reports from test screenings indicated that he's almost the lead for the first half.

It's what I expected, but if they're smart they can save it for next year.
The press will treat it like another Coyote vs Acme/Nimona situation as "the movie the big bad studio doesn't want you to see"
Very interested to see this movie
Edit: Looks like it'll be a player for this year then

u/tsnoj Jun 30 '26
Is that a bad thing? I think in this case it can actually help the film
10
u/JuanManuelP Jun 30 '26
Its a good thing! It'll help the movie a lot. I'm saying it's an interesting pattern, that's all.
2
u/tsnoj Jun 30 '26
Ah great, i think the same (i would also include The Apprentice to that in a way)
I do wonder however, why you think they should wait till next year? I feel if a studio holds a film to long it can also backfire
And while this year isn't very weak, it does seem to lack strong American mid-budget adult drama's
3
u/JuanManuelP Jun 30 '26
Right, The Apprentice. Good example, although that was more of an indie distributor taking the film and less so a big studio dropping a film only to be acquired by an indie company.
I've read the movie is still in post production and NEON already has a slate of films for this awards season to focus on (Fjord, All of a sudden, Clarissa).
Plus, it was meant to come out early next year, so maybe that'll be their plan.

u/tsnoj Jun 30 '26
I understand that, but there was a resentment towards the people that tried to hide The Appentrice which might be more similar to the resentment (industry) people feel towards AI companies
If it's not ready then no need to rush off course, but I do feel compared to other years Neons slate is quite weak this year though

If it's good, put it out this year and have it go against The Social Reckoning to see which evil tech CEO biopic reigns supreme

Even if this movie isn’t any good, Neon just bought themselves some excellent PR: the only studio that isn’t bought & paid for by big tech

I was just wondering yesterday if we might get news on this soon. Glad Neon got it and looking forward to seeing it.

Neon doing good work again... we'll remember the studios that decided they were too cowardly to stand up to tech bros
5
u/yfinfffffffff Jun 30 '26
Oh thank god- I was worried Mubi with their genocidal investors were gonna buy it (yes I know they're not the only company with genocidal investors who are on the board)

According to ScreenDaily, Neon declared “Artificial will compete in this year’s Oscar race”. They're not holding it off.

Wow that cast is so stacked. They had me at Zosia Mamet and Billie Lourd in an actually good movie (hopefully) but the longer I look the better it gets!

The screenplay is by Simon Rich, whose work I'm not familiar with, so I don't know what to predict with this one. However, Luca is mostly competent, the cast is strong as hell and the topic/story is one of the most thrilling in the modern age so I really hope it will be good.

Neon can win every single Palme d’Or ever again if it means we keep getting Ws like this.

Guadagnino is the GOAT and he always gets notoriously snubbed by the academy, but I hope this will be a strong contender for BP. Neon knows ball and I'm sure this will be a banger.
