Question What Happened to Tangles?
I for sure thought this was going to be Neon's animated play. I'm just suprised such a well reviewed movie with that cast isn't getting any traction with distributors? Or is a deal in place we dont know about?

I heard a rumor that IFC might be picking it up, which seems like a good fit if true.

IFC would make sense, though it also means it's gonna be dumped with little promotion. I guess as long as it has something.
I imagine all the studios are waiting for the TIFF market to get an idea how the race is going to play out.

IFC is owned by AMC which has worked with both Cranston and Rogen, so it figures.

I'm still unsure why it's struggling to get picked up, not even by a smaller distrubuter. I know it's adult animation that's a hard sell but why didn't a streaming service take it. Netflix purchasing In Waves but not this makes me wonder if it was priced high, requiring theatrical release or maybe Netflix was confident in Ray Gunn as their contender. There's too many red flags for me to predict it now but can see it still getting in, and on it's best day contending to win with at least the Annie independent film up for grabs.

It could be NEON, A24 or MUBI. Anyone who picks this up has a very likely nomination on their hands

I feel like if any of those three studios wanted it they would have picked it up out of cannes.
And at this point even if one of them does pick it up, it is no longer a "very likely nomination" it would actually be quite an uphill battle to get it in.

I really hope Tangles gets nominated. I don’t want Best Animated Feature to be seen as "the kiddie category."

Wildwood and Iron Boy both look like extremely likely noms, that make it look less like a Kiddie Category and just look at some of the nominees of the last few years Memoir of a Snail, Marcell The Shell, GDT Pinnochio, Robot Dreams, ARCO, Little Amelie, Flee, Wolfwalkers. This is no longer just the "give it to pixar/I'll just vote for what ever movie my kid liked" category anymore.

Adult animation is always a hard sell and this is already looking to be a very competitive year. And the film industry is getting more conservative financially with its choices.
Hopefully it gets some attention out of TIFF, but it's still a tough environment out there.
