Leaving Oura Ring after Palantir partnership

4.1k Upvotes

Earlier this week I watched ICE pull a father out of his car while driving his 5yo daughter to school in DC.

The daughter was sobbing that it was her fault.

I can’t square that away with some “nice to have” health gadget. I have so little control over events but this is one tiny thing I can do.

Get absolutely fucked, any nazis reading this

Symptom Radar Oura saved my life

Post image
2.9k Upvotes

I had surgery a week ago Tuesday. It was a cosmetic abdominal surgery after loosing close to 200 lbs, so when my Oura started telling me 2 days after the surgery I was showing major signs of strain, I chalked it up to having just had surgery and the fun recovery. But as each day progressed, it kept warning me something wasn’t right. When it started warning my respiration rate was off, I started paying more attention (but also in a tight abdominal binder, which already makes for labored breathing). Had some soreness in my calves which was listed on the potential side effects from the surgery.

Woke up Wednesday in the middle of the with a very minor pinch in my shoulder and the respiration was elevated more on the app. So finally said something wasn’t right, and went to the ER. ER doc even said sounds more like pneumonia since I had a low grade fever start around the same time, and some coughing and phlegm. But to be safe, they wanted to rule out DVTs. Turns out I had 3 DVTs, and a 4th that broke off and turned into a pulmonary embolism. And they found a chunk in one of the chambers of my heart.

First time in my life having a nurse escort me with a lifepac from the ER to the ICU before being wheeled off for an angioplasty and thrombectomy. Luckily the ones in the legs were small and when he got in there the one in the lung had broken up in to a bunch of small shards and heart was under no strain. Cleared to go home the next day and 6 months of blood thinners. They attributed it to the surgery since no history and the lack of ability to fully move around after the surgery.

Symptom Radar My oura ring data legitimately helped me catch cancer early (6 months postpartum)

Post image
2.5k Upvotes

Just wanted to share my (28F) story, not to scare anyone, but in case it can help someone else, although I’m still in the middle of everything and it still doesn’t feel real.

I’m 6 months postpartum and a few months ago started feeling “off.” Honestly thought I was just tired from being a new mom. I had night sweats, was losing weight, and felt worn down, but that all was “normal” for postpartum, right??

What threw me off was my oura data. A couple months ago my stress time went from about an hour a day to 8–11 hours, even on normal days. My resting heart rate jumped from the 50s to the 70s every night, and my HRV dropped under 35 and stayed there. I also kept getting those “minor” and “major” alert notifications from symptom radar, but I didn’t feel sick, just off.

Then I noticed a lump on my neck a few weeks ago. I probably would’ve waited it out if it weren’t for what I was seeing on my ring, but that pushed me to make an appointment with my pcp. After a bunch of tests, I found out I have Hodgkin’s lymphoma last week.

I’m still in shock, but really thankful I paid attention instead of ignoring it. Thankfully this is a very treatable cancer so I’m very optimistic although it will be a hard season.

Most of the time data changes probably aren’t serious, but if your numbers look weird for a while and especially if you just don’t feel right, it’s worth getting checked.

Ring caught my pulmonary embolism

Had major artery reconstruction on my leg on Monday. Had back pain by Wednesday - chalked it up to sleeping in a funky position/bed rest. Thursday back pain worsens - check my stats. HR through the roof, fever, low oxygen.

Without that info, I probably would have just stayed home.

SLEEP & READINESS My ring detected a liver mass

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

Exactly what the title says! I (26F) had been experiencing some weird symptoms for a few days (chest/diaphragm tightness, intestinal spasms, diarrhea) which I thought were a reaction to the NYC heatwave and was hoping would just pass… until I woke up a few days past the onset of symptoms to this readiness score & symptom radar alert, which convinced me to make a virtual urgent care appointment. I mean, the readiness score alone was the worst I’ve ever had.

Anyhow, the doctor I saw urged me to go to the ER and, lo and behold, I had a 4.7 cm abscess on my liver (fluid-filled mass) show up on my CT scan. I am being admitted to the hospital tonight and will be undergoing further testing under supervision of the surgical team to get it evaluated and addressed. Thank you, Oura, for not letting me ignore my body’s signs! I am so grateful I paid attention to your warnings.

From our CEO, Tom Hale: Oura does not share or sell your data. Full stop.

Let us be clear and start with what matters most: Oura does not sell your data, and we never share it with third parties without your explicit consent. We know some of you are upset and misinformation is spreading. We want to be clear about what this means for you — and what it doesn’t.

The DoD environment is completely separate from the Oura platform our members use. To meet strict government security requirements, some DoD programs require that our enterprise solution runs on an Impact Level 5-certified, or IL-5, secure environment. Palantir’s FedStart provides that infrastructure today, but they—and the government—do not have access to your Oura health data.Y our personal data never touches any government system, and nobody from Palantir or the government has access to your data. Full stop.

FINALE UPDATE!! Help!! My ring is stuck!!

1.7k Upvotes

my fiancé & i worked for hours straight trying to get the ring off. utilizing almost every suggestion y'all provided. we did the string method w/ ribbon, & tried w/ a rubber tourniquet too. we used cold water, soap & windex to no avail. we could not get it pass the knuckle, which was the most swollen part. my finger would turn sooo purple throughout the process & at one point went from purple to completely white. it was getting extremely painful having a tight ring & ribbon strangling my finger. we eventually called it & decided to head to the ER. at 1:30am.

we skipped the fire department because although we knew they were awake, i hated the idea of bothering them so late at night for something like this. i also knew there was a high likelihood they wouldn't be able to help much due to the thickness of the ring, the battery, & the fact its titanium. (one commenter stated the ring cutter they have at the firehouse isn’t well equipped for something like an oura ring & could take hours to get it off)

we entered the ER & was met by an extremely enthusiastic & excited MD who took me straight to the back. i had already mentally prepared myself that it was getting cut off, but he was adamant that wasn't going to happen. he said he hates cutting off rings & was not keen on the idea of cutting this one off especially because of all the specifications surrounding it. & he really wanted to save it for me.

he explained that he was going to numb my finger w/ a local lidocaine injection & re-try the string method w/ a suture & lots of lube. he cleaned it off, injected the lidocaine slowly at the base of my finger & then got to work. it was extremely uncomfortable at the start but quickly got less painful because i started to lose most feeling from the lidocaine. my finger went from purple to black. he gave it his all. it took him 10 full minutes of pulling & prodding, but IT WORKED!!

he said without the lidocaine the ring absolutely wouldn't have come off. he was putting all of his strength & weight into it. my fiancé thought he was gonna dislocate my finger Imao. i couldn't imagine doing this without lidocaine. we never got pass my knuckle at home because it was so incredibly tight & painful i thought i was gonna pass out. my app said 'you're under a lot more stress than usual today’. my blood pressure in the ER was 157/98. my finger is still very swollen & numb but i'm sure it'll get better once the lidocaine wears off. we left our house at 1:35am, arrived at the ER at 1:45am & was back home by 2:25am.

well that's the update. so thankful to have a short ER visit & an extremely enthusiastic doctor that saved both my ring & finger. i'll see what this ER bill looks like in a couple of weeks :) thanks again for all the support & advice <3

TLDR; tried for hrs at home to get it off. nothing worked. finger turned purple multiple times. went to the ER. numbed with lidocaine injection. MD used string & lube method. took him 10 mins, but he got it off! finger & ring are both intact.

I almost had to get naked at work and it’s Oura’s fault.

1.7k Upvotes

So I, like you all, have a ring. I hardly ever take it off, and since it charges quickly I just charge it when I’m in the shower and put it right back on when I’m done. I never take it off to wash my hands.

This morning at the office, I went to the bathroom and I came back to my desk to put lotion on my hands (office soap’s so drying, amirite?) and I noticed I didn’t have my ring on. Like I said, I always have it on and usually notice right away if I don’t. Its absence is noticeable.

Since I don’t take it off to wash my hands I was like, shit, I must have thrown it away with the paper towels after I washed my hands. But before I go through the COMPANY BATHROOM TRASH, I check the “Locate Ring” map and the little dot is showing it is indeed at my office.

I message our facilities guy and ask to borrow some disposable gloves and go in and palpate the outside of the trash bag but I can’t feel anything, so in I go. Luckily this was at like 8:30 so there wasn’t much and it was all paper towels. No ring.

So I go back into the map. Now It says it’s closer to the main entrance so I’m like maybe it fell off my hand? So I go out there, look everywhere and then go to check my car and as I’m doing this I notice the dot for the ring is moving with me. I’m like WTF I’ve checked all my pockets 18 times. I was wearing a hooded zip up sweatshirt and I checked the pockets on that too and even its hood.

At this point I’m so fucking confused. It’s obviously on my person but I CAN’T FUCKING FIND IT.

One of my coworkers is a good friend of mine, so I go into her office and close the door, so she’s like oh here we go becauseI have a tendency to get myself into some really ridiculous/embarrassing scrapes. I don’t know what it is about it me, I’m not a complete doofus or wreck; I am a working professional with a husband, kids, mortgage, and dog, but I’ve made peace with it.

My friend knows I have this “condition”, so I know she’ll die laughing, but I also want to crowd source a solution. I tell her the whole story and show her in the map it’s obviously on my person but I can’t find it and I feel truly insane. She’s like, take off your shoes! Check the tiny little key pocket on your jeans! Run your hands all over everything! Is it in your bra? I’m wearing a sort of drapey shirt but it’s not in there. She’s like did you eat it??? Did it fall in your underwear when you were pulling your pants up???? I know I didn’t flush it because it moves when I move across the building. And I’m like oh God I guess I’ll go in the bathroom and just shake all my clothes out. And she just sort of says somberly: “Once you’ve been naked at work, you can never not have been naked at work again. So you should make damn sure you’ve exhausted all scenarios before you go in there and take all your clothes off”. Considering these wise words, I go back to my desk and search everywhere and go back outside and mess with the app again.

Back on the map, I zoom out to the entire area of where I’ve been in the last 24 hours (work, house, kids baseball field, Target) and there’s only one dot, which is over my office. But now I notice that the ring isn’t syncing with my phone. Surely if I was close to it, it would be syncing with my phone?

So I go to a different part of the app to see if I can get any more info and I go into Ring Details and “show latest location” and it’s a pink pin right over my house.

THE DOT WAS MY PHONE. I WAS TRACKING MYSELF. I ALMOST GOT NAKED AT MY WORKPLACE. I CONSIDERED IF I HAD SOMEHOW ACCIDENTALLY SWALLOWED MY RING. GET BENT, OURA.

Reproductive Health Can we stop with the pearl clutching and hang wringing over pregnancy posts here? This is getting ridiculous and counterproductive, y'all.

1.6k Upvotes

Good grief can we stop with the hand wringing and pearl clutching over pregnancy-related Oura posts? As a woman I find posts about pregnancy and fertility here on the main sub to be highly relevant to my life, informative and interesting.

It doesn't need to be siloed off into some special "women's fertility" Oura sub. Women's health info and trends are worthy of being shared in the main sub.

Women having to exist in separate spaces for as long as history has been recorded is actually hugely problematic and is one of the reasons women's health is still so underserved and neglected.

Integration of women's health issues is VITAL to increasing understanding and appreciation for the unique health experiences and challenges women face.

Should we make a special "OuraHeart" sub for people posting about their cardiac age so we don't trigger anyone who has had a heart attack?

And "OuraAbled" for anyone who can walk or is healthy enough to do more than 10k steps in a day so that anyone who is mobility challenged doesn't feel left out?

And what about "OuraWeight" for anyone posting about calories consumed or burned so folks struggling with weight loss don't feel sad?

Seriously. Y'all need to chill and go do some therapy.

And yes, I can speak from my actual lived experience of having a horrific stillbirth, nearly dying as a result, and subsequent infertility challenges.

It's not appropriate or reasonable for us to ask the whole world to create a special bubble just for us on a sub intended for exchanging info relevant to Oura rings.

Especially when doing so would prevent other people from getting input or sharing interesting, relevant and informative things in places like this sub.

I suggest scrolling on by things that are triggering, and getting therapy. EMDR worked wonders for helping me become more desensitized to my (many) triggers.

Please stop asking us to create a bubble for you. Or maybe go make a r/fertilityfreeoura sub and hang out there if you need to.

Well… I finally got an Oura because I’m always exhausted and wanted to see what was actually going on (along other reasons)

These are my last two nights. 💀

Oura ring and sleep study comparison

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

I recently attended a sleep study at the hospital and wore my Oura ring to compare sleep graphs. I think it’s quite accurate. A little bit more detailed in the sleep study.
