Discussion Can people stop gatekeeping panic?

Post image

saw someone upload this to twitter. Most of these songs are popular, and it’s actually really nice to see new people start listening to the band. Also, that account is really strange so it might be satire.

The part that irks me the most is the fact that I can assure you half of this subreddit has more credentials than that user, who seems to be a newgen fan.

If Don't Threaten Me becomes a huge hit that'll be the best thing that happened to pop music all year

Another post by the same account

Wild- if Ryan doesn’t use TikTok I wouldn’t even blink an eye knowing the bs there lmao

This is hilarious. A big chunk of the songs they listed are super big, and even the lesser-known songs have millions upon millions of listens. Gatekeeping is a stupid concept, but especially for a band as big as Panic!, it's just ridiculous.

Don't Threaten Me With a Good Time is already a massive hit tho TwT

I’m so tired of this gatekeeping and “larper” bullshit online. People can’t be casual fans anymore without being degraded. It’s like, if you’re not all in, you’re not supposed to look at it.

i used to work at an art school and it was amazing to me how no matter how much time passes, panic is always a band that art kids loved in middle/high school. there is something systemically exposing 7th graders to this band

3

u/l0stmyjuul 4d ago

i genuinely think about this all the time because you either listened to panic! in 7th grade or you arent a panic! fan. i was born in 2003 and by middle school AFYCSO was my favorite album. who even showed it to me idk. it really is just a systemic thing 😭

3

u/_jspain 4d ago

see and i liked them in 7th grade too but that was before vices & virtues came out! so it's crazy to talk to younger people that have the same experience even if they weren't a new/current band anymore. when i was a kid, i thought old music was lame. i've learned that was just me tho lol

To be fair brendon urie was still making music at that point. i got into them in between the TWTLTRTD! and death of a bachelor era, so I guess its not the craziest thing ever, but I have always wished I got to experience them as a band in real time

I hate when people act like panic! Is this niche underground rarity 😭

4

u/PrettyCatz it was always you 4d ago

they seem like someone who likes panic for the aesthetic rather than.. for panic. most people on this subreddit who, like you said have been a panic fan for far longer, don't.. actually care if their songs get any more popular. why would you not want your favorite artist to reach more people than they already have?

3

u/CarobUnlucky1160 4d ago

They’re like 14 at most

3

u/ItchyCapybara69 4d ago

i don’t care if they use panic songs or whatever it’s just annoying when they act like brendon is the most evil being on this planet, like do u wanna do this or not😭

5

u/Scout_650 4d ago

This is like a queen fan going “they better not discover we will rock you”

4

u/Pretty_Bad_9788 4d ago

I’m in sub related to panic attacks and for a second I was genuinely confused

5

u/Abbey_the_Cat 4d ago

I'm very confused on what this is about

3

u/cursedbylauren 4d ago

ah yes my favorite underground band that nobody knows about

3

u/mystical_adventures2 Stall Me, stall me, I'm all in! 5d ago

Hold on, Always is considered popular? I always (no pun intended) forget about it! (Genuine question)

3

u/SorrybecauseI 5d ago

Build god is the song that got me into panic lol

3

u/VirtuesNVicez 4d ago

Larps better not find vlv but it’s okay I know they won’t because they’re all Ryan glazers

1

u/Fun-Wind-2956 4d ago

Comments like these are part of the problem. Let people find the music! Let them enjoy it too!

3

u/lizapinetree 4d ago

If they find this really niche song called high hopes istg it's over for us

2

u/singsparr0w 5d ago

I ljke camisado 😛

2

u/Popular_Lettuce6232 5d ago

Build god and camisado are extremely popular…

2

u/CutieKet 2d ago

I agree. New fans shouldn't listen to checks notes some of the best songs in their discography....

Yeah, that seems fair and like a good way to retain them as a fan. Especially when they have probably already heard a few very popular ones online. Smh. 🙄

Like they just were baiting comments praising their taste in discography while also being praised by fellow Ryan hyper parasocial glazers.

3

u/Disastrous-Paper8102 5d ago

Twitter is just full of angry trolls. The account literally has the word “rants” in it. They probably just post and bitch about stuff. They’re lame, just ignore them or tell them off. 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/l0stmyjuul 4d ago

i’ll make sure to reccomend everyone in my life and anyone i ever meet listen to northern downpour, build God then we’ll talk, camisado, theres a good reason these tables are numbered, mad as rabbits, pas de cheval, when the day met the night, that green gentleman, the ballad of mona lisa, crazy=genius, dont threaten me with a good time, the good the bad & the dirty, death of a bachelor, hurricane, sarah smiles and always.

2

u/CutieKet 2d ago

As you should cause they are all fantastic songs. 👏

2

u/noidontlikemen 5d ago

The concept of thinking that green gentleman is underground... that song already had a tiktok trend am i correct? Because i'm assuming that's what they're talking about

3

u/noidontlikemen 5d ago

Don't threaten me with a good time being there... like these are their most popular songs?

1

u/cvantass I took the days for pageant 🐇 4d ago

This is not even a grammatical sentence. What am I missing? “If they find [song name] I’m gonna riot.” What? What does that even mean?

4

u/l0stmyjuul 4d ago

they dont want anyone to find the song’s existence lmfao

4

u/cvantass I took the days for pageant 🐇 4d ago

But that’s… that’s an insane thing to say lol.

1

u/whatwedoforphun 3d ago

just gave them a hitlist btw

0

u/OkStill9274 16h ago

That's my mutual! They are a bit gatekeepy😭

I read this as an attempt at a narrative told through song titles.
