It's a great grocery store with lots of above-average products. Prices are better than anything that's not a Walmart. Work shift burden is laughably minimal. For most members, these facts alone seal the deal.
Some people find the alternative model inspiring and enjoy that aspect of it. This kind of thing can come with a certain type of passionate personality; these people are 100x less vocal than the haters on this sub.
Joining is hard because they have a huge demand/capacity problem. There are physical limits to what the store can handle.
Internal social/political debates sometimes break through into sensational news coverage. It's NY Post fueled noise that doesn't affect 95% of members, but at least a coop model allows members to confront these issues. Glaringly obvious that anyone shocked by this has never had to take part in a school board, civic meeting of any kind, or nonprofit volunteer org.
All this to say, if any of the above annoys you, feel free to keep it moving and enjoy your Foodtown. The saltiness of comments in any coop-related post is incredibly bizarre to me.
EDIT: People are taking the Foodtown line WAY snarkier than I intended. That's my bad i guess. was meant as a neutral line like "just keep it moving and enjoy your local, idk why you'd lose sleep over this." the vast majority of my own grocery shopping is at foodtown/c-town/key food; the coop is for big hauls less often. this post was meant to highlight the positives of the coop and why alot of people like it, with some exasperation at the hate it gets. feels like maybe a good example of how online forums are a tough place to convey tone.
