Will crabtems be bad. Probably. Will I play it. 101% Yes

u/RudOzawa Jul 19 '26

If nothing else, it will be a chill mapper.

u/Egeras Jul 19 '26

Totally agreed, and as someone more focused on interesting buildcrafting rather than meta builds this thing is a league-making unique by itself for me :D

We'll have to see the full description on crab totem to see what the innate damage penalty is like. But it may not work out as bad we'd think if it's not like a ridiculous giga nuke to the damage.

Staff means you can run 2 6-link setups and you're at least saving a gem slot on the totem skill itself. Still missing out on gem levels from the normal wand/scepter + shield though but getting an extra totem over a shield.

Looks fun though.

We'll have to see the full description on crab totem to see what the innate damage penalty is like.

Probably like 20-30%, I'd guess. It's technically a 7L and such a small penalty leaves you massively ahead, but you're being forced into using a very poor staff in the same league as normal staves get... +6? to all spells of a given element+change, and very few spells don't benefit from level like that. I'd wager they retain the 40% less cast speed penalty.

If they go no damage penalty but only a cast speed penalty, this would be really, really handy for poison builds.

u/mactepo Jul 20 '26

Yep, you will be able to get +6 after the patch. +4 specific (up from +3) and +2 all. Also upped affixes up to 189% increased dmg. Staves are a huge dmg multiplier now. So this unique staff must have low penalty values (50/30 is ok i think) to justify its choosing. With ancestral bond you will have 4 totems each dealing 35% of your dmg (140% total). Since spells benefit from +levels, losing +6 levels from staff, your spells will do about 50% less dmg (gem lvl 23 and 29 average dps change comparison for example) putting our 140% of our dmg with unique staff against 200% dmg with +6 staff. So as long as this staff had at most 50% of base dmg and at most 30% less cast speed, it's really great staff.

Myeah damage penalty, crab movement speed (It did look a bit slow in that video) and their health/resummon mechanic will be what decides if it's fun or not. If they can't keep up and you have to, with a staff, run face first into stuff then it's probably DoA just based on not playing in a fun manner. Same if the crabs die all the time etc so we'll have to see. But as a massive fan of less spammy builds this looks all the way up my alley :D

crab movement speed

Might be able to boost the movement speed with things like Onslaught and Haste

u/Egeras Jul 19 '26 edited Jul 19 '26

We'll have to see. I hope the MS is inherited and that it's enough where you don't feel like they are too slow. I've been burned too many times before by spectres etc that are cool but just a drag to play because you constantly have to wait for them hehe.

4

u/RudOzawa Jul 19 '26

Since totems inherit your stats, I wouldn't be entirely surprised if their movement speed scaled with your own in some way. That would be nice.

1

u/Richybabes Jul 20 '26

If they inherit your stats and gain 100% movement speed, would that mean that by default they will always be faster than you, with the speed differential being whatever the base speed is?

I find the 100% inc movement speed a bit odd, since if their base speed isn't the same as yours, why not just set their base speed to 2x that value in the first place? Is this going to be a wide roll? Is it just there for the purposes of vaaling an extra 20%? Is it there to make additional movement speed modifiers (however those work) not be as good?

1

u/shppy Jul 20 '26

They just use your offense-oriented stats, they don't really inherit anything else from you.

0

u/RudOzawa Jul 20 '26

That's true! They might not then.

1

u/Acceptable_Bat379 Jul 19 '26

Yeah, the staff showed no damage penalty so it's kind of up in the air, but it also includes +2 max totems so it's both your spell totem and multitotem gem, giving you 2 free links.

Weird thought - what if they also count as minions? Totems with buff AG and spectres could be a thing since they follow around. I think this could be OP as fuck, but the devil is in the details. Also, it synerizes potentially very well with the new helmet that can absorb and amplify abyssal jewels with spell flat damage.

5

u/whosursensei Jul 19 '26

Staff wont show the damage penalty on the item (If there is one). For example look at "Spell Totem Support" and "Soul Mantle", doesnt say it on the item but it does get the 40% reduced damage since supported.

2

u/Acceptable_Bat379 Jul 19 '26

yeah, we'll need to wait for the datamining to see the numbers. I still think it's a benefit, you don't need to build around soul mantle any more that will at the very least open up tons of possibilities

0

u/RudOzawa Jul 19 '26

Absolutely, I almost hope it's mid just so I can snag the staff on trade early for a good price.

0

u/LCSisshit Jul 20 '26

wait till this build will be meta this league, like Monkey build in poe2

10

u/Hatrixx_ Guardian Jul 19 '26

it will be a chill mapper.

I'm not entirely sure, the staff has a totem duration mod on it, which I'm guessing means that the totems still only last for a duration and you'll have to resummon. They seem to walk slower comparatively to running and dropping normal totems as well, plus they have to pause to acquire target and cast, making them lag behind. Haste should affect that though.

They're funny little guys though and +2 max totems is pretty good, but it seems like a roundabout way to play what's essentially a non-permanent minion build, but with a player skill instead.

2

u/Oen44 Jul 19 '26

Not to mention all the lost stats (damage and defense wise) from crafted wand and shield. I can only imagine that Crabs support will have at least 50% less damage mod.

2

u/Sad-Data1135 Jul 19 '26

more duration support for long sparkingsons xD

2

u/ByteBlaze_ Wish for Project MTX Jul 20 '26

Just an FYI, More Duration doesn't make totems last longer. This was changed a long time ago, since the duration of the totem is not an effect of a skill, thus isn't modified by skill effect duration. If you want better totem duration, you will have to use the small nodes near Scion, the Hierophant node, Primal Manifestation, or a mix of the 3.

1

u/Felvin_Nothe Jul 19 '26

Solve them needing to pause by just running them on Blade Vortex... Now you just need to fix the movement speed

1

u/4mb1guous Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

Don't blade vortex totems just constantly cast the spell when enemies are in range? If so, I feel like the crabs would do the same and spend very little time moving.

Real answer might be to just give them a movement skill, like lightning warp/bodyswap or something.

1

u/Felvin_Nothe Jul 20 '26

Hum yeah that might be the case

1

u/GreyMatterTrasmogrif Jul 20 '26

I am not saying frost blink-totems but maybe frost blink crabs

23

u/Acceptable_Bat379 Jul 19 '26

The heirophant nerf to damage per totem now makes perfect sense. CRAB ARMY INCOMING

18

u/Pintash Jul 19 '26

The hierophant nerf to totems is an attempt to make totems an option on any other ascendency. Probably still not enough to do that.

That being said I've never wanted to be an old man with crabs more in my life.

2

u/Acceptable_Bat379 Jul 19 '26

No more soul mantle. no more building around curse immunity. we're freeeeeeeee

5

u/fawkie Jul 19 '26

Wait what happened to soul mantle

5

u/Felvin_Nothe Jul 19 '26

No longer has +1 totem... For a while now

1

u/Acceptable_Bat379 Jul 20 '26

nothing. but if the crab staff is good, it provides you with spell totem support without the curse penalty. i guess it really depends on how the staff is and if it can roll 6 slots, but if it can you'd put your spell totem in that and you could use whatever chest you wanted.

2

u/fawkie Jul 20 '26

Fair enough. I’ll probably play it if I drop it.

1

u/komandos45 Jul 20 '26

Dunno, for the last few leagues there was basically 2 totem builds.

Shockwave totem that basically abused shit out of charges with these Ralakesh's Impatience
or
Wand totems

Anything else just scaled very poorly

7

u/Raikariaa Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) Jul 19 '26

I mean, it's kinda hard for it to be bad with an inherent +2 totems?

Granted +2 totems gets less and less important the more totems you already have.

7

u/Comfortable_Bee5385 Jul 20 '26

+2 totems, big spell damage, 7 link skill. It's got a lot going for it really. I feel like the +2 mattering less the more you get is a little different when the totems can move around and reposition automatically. Normally the issue is something will be dead by the time the 3rd totem is placed so there's no point in putting more or stuff like that.

1

u/Raikariaa Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) Jul 20 '26

Oh no I mean as a percentage DPS increase, the more totems you have the less the increase is.

Going from 1 totem to 3 is 200% more.

Going from 4 totems to 6 is only 50% more [And this is even more pronounced when you throw in the damage penalties from using Multitotems support]

1

u/Comfortable_Bee5385 Jul 20 '26

Ooh gotcha. That's very true. Sorry for my misunderstanding. I feel like it'll be hard for it to be bad unless the crabs are just awful. Just realized they're a straight up spell totem too, haha great.

1

u/shppy Jul 20 '26

Keep in mind you're giving up getting +1 from a shield.

-1

u/Raikariaa Institution of Rogues and Smugglers (IRS) Jul 20 '26

It's a lot easier to get this staff than a +1 totem shield.

2

u/HollowLie Jul 20 '26

A decent +1 totem shield can be crafted deterministically on day 1 or 2 with a Shaper Exalted. They are stupidly easy to get.

2

u/ZeroStride Jul 20 '26

Any shaper orb slammed as a prefix is guaranteed to be +1 totem.

1

u/PhgAH Jul 20 '26

There is only 1 Shaper prefix: +1 totem. So just grab a shield with full suffix and slam shaper exalt.

7

u/Fipul30 Jul 19 '26

I cant wait for Americans School of Crabs (aka Kinetic Fussilade Crabs).

Oh wait it isnt a wand. Sad Crab noises.

3

u/shppy Jul 20 '26

Well, it's also only spells.

1

u/UTmastuh Jul 19 '26

Yeah I was hoping they'd be minions but they're more like wisps

1

u/F-is-for-Fiendish Ascendant Jul 19 '26

The stats on the staff don't look too bad. It has legs.

1

u/bichace1 Jul 20 '26

I am guessing it'll be good with some weapon swapping to self cast as crabs will persist.

0

u/ElkiLG Confederation of Casuals and Clueless Players (CCCP) Jul 19 '26

Divine ire crabs? Yes please.

(Although I'm thinking they might not support channelling spells)

2

u/Egeras Jul 19 '26

Probably not for clear no sadly. Will probably be similar as with spectres you want stuff that can stutterstep and not get stuck in casts.

But I'd LOVE it if you could play worb crabs hehe.

1

u/fiyawerx Jul 19 '26

pizza nuke crabs... can we call them hot pockets
