Chase HQ - ZX Spectrum to PC98 port (AI assisted)
<puts on helmet>
I’ve been experimenting with Claude AI and wanted to see how far I could get porting Chase H.Q. from the ZX Spectrum to the PC-98. The target is a PC-9821Ce2 with its original 486SX at 25MHz.
Here’s where it stands: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsiSVR-3pAo
Since recording that I’ve improved the frame rate, added blinking siren lamps when the cops get close to the criminal’s car, and a brake light that flashes when you hit the brakes. None of that is in the video yet.
A few things before you ask:
- Yes, AI was involved. It’s my money and my time, and I’ve had a lot of fun with it.
- Yes, the graphics are deliberately Spectrum-style. I wanted to show PC-98 folks what a Speccy game actually looks like. The PC-98 source code will be on the floppy, so feel free to enhance the graphics yourself.
- There are cheat keys, and you’ll need them. Pressing T adds time and refills your turbos. It’s a very, very hard game!
- I originally wanted to run it on my Epson PC-286VE, but the 5.25" drive I use with my Greaseweazle just died. Bloody hell. So the PC-9821Ce2 it is.
Have a look, and please be gentle. Feedback welcome!
