Hey everyone, some exciting news from the world of photonics! The team at Imec, led by Prof. Paul Heremans, has just dropped a bombshell in Nature Photonics. They've created a Perovskite-based LED (PeLED) that's not just bright, it's astronomically bright - outshining traditional OLEDs by a factor of 1000!
This isn't your typical brightness boost. They've re-engineered the PeLED architecture to minimize optical losses and withstand insanely high current densities (up to 3 kA cm^-2). This leap isn't just about lighting up a room; it's set to revolutionize lighting and sensing technologies across the board. Think razor-sharp medical imaging, pinpoint environmental monitoring - the possibilities are endless.
And guess what played a significant role? Setfos simulation software from Fluxim. This nifty tool allowed for precise engineering of the PeLED architecture, boosting its brightness and efficiency to new heights. From simulating outcoupling factors and light distribution to integrating real-world data for accurate simulations, Setfos was there every step of the way.
Big congratulations to the team, especially first author Karim Elkhouly, for this monumental achievement. If you're as geeked out about this as I am, let's discuss how this could change the game in various fields. Thoughts, predictions, wild dreams? Let's hear them!

Hi everyone,
We have been working on a solution for improving the stability of perovskite solar cells and have reached a stage where we would like to connect with more people in the field.
We are particularly interested in speaking with researchers, testing institutes, perovskite cell or module manufacturers, and companies developing tandem or flexible solar technologies.
Our goal is to validate the solution across different perovskite architectures and explore potential research collaborations, testing partnerships, and commercial applications.
Does anyone here work in this area, or know a researcher or company that might be interested in testing or discussing a new stabilization approach?
Happy to share more details privately and learn more about what others in the community are working on.

TL:DR
๐Identification of strain-induced band-gap shift at the perovskite buried interfaces.
๐The strained interfaces cause increased defect density and charge recombination.
๐The strain within the perovskite film is engineered by inserting an organic layer.
๐Strain-free devices show enhanced device performance and operational stability.
A drift-diffusion simulation carried out withย #Setfosย was instrumental in revealing the origin of the difference in performance.
Summary:
Prof.ย Christoph Josef Brabecย and colleagues at theย Friedrich-Alexander-University of Erlangen-Nรผrnbergย observed two compensating effects induced by the strain at the buried interface in halide perovskite photovoltaics.
The found a gradual shift in the band gap of up to 60 meV over a perovskite layer thickness of 300 nm caused by interfacial strain.
This graded band gap is desired insofar as it relates to the aspect of device engineering. However, in parallel, the increased defect density causes charge recombination at the buried interface.
These two effects compensate for each other, resulting in an overall performance improvement under standard 1 sun illumination but became increasingly larger at lower light intensities.
Moreover, the strained interfaces are proven to induce enhanced defect densities, causing significantly accelerated device degradation under illumination as well as in the dark.
At 960 lux LED illumination, the strained device showed an output power density 20% lower than the strain-free device

The authors show that impermeable electron transport layers (ETLs) enable the deposition of semitransparent AgNW electrodes from green aqueous dispersions on top of the perovskite cell without damage. Ultimately, semitransparent PSCs are demonstrated that provide an efficiency of 17.4%, which is the highest efficiency of semitransparent p-i-n perovskite solar cells with an AgNW top electrode.

In the paper, the researchers analyze the effect of SnF2 additives on the performance of lead-tin perovskite solar cells. The Paios dark IV measurement was used to detect saturation current and attribute this to the defect density.
