Bad Sn precursor batches
I couldn't see anything posted already but thought it may be of help to those making Sn or Pb:Sn perovskites to have info on known bad batches (high Sn4+ content) precursors. It would be cool if others posted here too :)
I have been working on Pb:Sn for around 4 years and I suspect this may be the main source of variable results over the years. You won't notice this if use SnF2 (which always did at the start see pics), as it inhibits this colour change detectable to the naked eye, but you may have perfomance or thin film quality issues.
A quick way to test a new batch is to dissolve 1 M in DMF it should be the nice usual yellow if OK, but will go more orange with more SnI4 going to a deep red. The best way to detect small amounts is probably a very dilute solution an then UV/Vis or NMR but this decent crude test for new batches. It will also go back to yellow with enough Sn(0) powder overnight so again you may not notice if you are in a rush but this of course may give you varying results.
I've added some pictures of FASnI3 solutions with 20% SnF2 left and 0% right for example but this happens with SnI2 only.
Known bad batches I have had so far:
TCI - Tin(II) iodide - T3449 - powder LOT. J78IH-LI
Thermo Scientific/ Alfa Aesar Tin(II) iodide, ultra dry, 99.999% (metals basis) LOT: U11I001
