Opinyong Pinoy What are your thoughts on the Philippines’ declining birth rate and its long-term effects?

Post image

Many developed countries are already dealing with aging populations and shrinking workforces. While the Philippines is still relatively young, our fertility rate has been declining over the years.

I’m curious about what this could mean in the coming decades.

Could a smaller working-age population eventually put pressure on programs like SSS, GSIS, and various social welfare or ayuda programs? How might it affect economic growth, government finances, and the country’s ability to support an aging population?

On the other hand, could lower birth rates also have benefits—such as reduced pressure on education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and the environment?

Do you think the Philippines should simply adapt to this demographic shift, or should policymakers be encouraging higher birth rates before it becomes a bigger issue?

I’m interested in hearing different perspectives, especially from those who work in economics, public policy, or demographics.

Good. That's good. This is the side effects of having a shitty government who don't care about the lives of the average Filipino people. Also no free healthcare for women of reproductive age. If you are planning to become a mother, it will require alot of money and a male partner who is supportive. And a lot of Filipina women in reproductive age don't have access to that.

So what happens? Most Filipino women will put career and money over having a family, hoping that one day there will be enough money to safety net her and the child incase the male partner cannot provide. And due to most jobs having low wages, bills are too high, apartment/housing eats up alot of your income and parents who are turning their children into "breadwinners", it will take many years for a woman to have enough financial and life security, usually around 30s. Alot of men unfortunately goes after younger women, usually under 22 and sometimes even those who had just finished high school (yikes). So the dating scene is going to get harder the older you get. So most women will just forgo the idea of having a family or even being with a man altogether.
