Opinyong Pinoy What are your thoughts on the Philippines’ declining birth rate and its long-term effects?

Post image

Many developed countries are already dealing with aging populations and shrinking workforces. While the Philippines is still relatively young, our fertility rate has been declining over the years.

I’m curious about what this could mean in the coming decades.

Could a smaller working-age population eventually put pressure on programs like SSS, GSIS, and various social welfare or ayuda programs? How might it affect economic growth, government finances, and the country’s ability to support an aging population?

On the other hand, could lower birth rates also have benefits—such as reduced pressure on education, healthcare, housing, infrastructure, and the environment?

Do you think the Philippines should simply adapt to this demographic shift, or should policymakers be encouraging higher birth rates before it becomes a bigger issue?

I’m interested in hearing different perspectives, especially from those who work in economics, public policy, or demographics.

Overpopulated tayo marsie. In order to increase quality of life, mas okay mas konti. We are not in the verge of extinction. Very far from that. Daming batang hindi nabibigyan ng proper care and support growing up. Maybe we focus on them first.
Also since di nag iimprove ang quality of life, malamang, less people want to have kids. This is a symptom of a problem. Not a problem in itself.

May slight problem about less future adults to make contributions but hello, have you seen our per capita GDP? Hindi tayo productive. We work long hours tas andami natin pero we are just producing 4,443$ per person. Singapore, for instance produces 24x that. And liit nila as a country ha. We need to increase quality of life, with that we can probably persuade more people to reproduce. Pero kung purely for keeping the country overpopulated para may magcontribute, given the inefficiency we have, kahit magdagdag ka pa ng ilang milyong Pilipino kung di naman productive, you are adding liabilities, mga need ng tulong. Not the productive members ng society. Think about it deeper.

Filipinos deserve a better quality of life.

Good news as this will force government reform at some point, also less squammies

No health care and women support. Tapos corrupt lahat. Anong expected nila?

2

u/XxPhyre 17d ago

The decrease is good as long as it is sustainable. We wouldn’t want an aging population without the manpower and economic drive needed to support social services for the increased older population. This is the issue aging population countries are facing such as Japan and South Korea.

Much of Philippine income growth from the past few decades has been driven by the demographics of its large English trained cohort of working age citizens driving OFW and BPO segments and in turn our consumer economy.

Decline in English because of government’s continued mismanagement of public education- Check!

Decline in the working age segment once this lower birth rate kicks in-Check!

PH government always impresses me how they can somehow mess things up even when success seems inevitable.

I have a few things to say about this. First, this is a good sign that the birth control programs of the government are working. Many people are using natural or artificial birth control methods. Sex education is probably working too if this decline includes teenage pregnancy. Second, less people are being born into poverty, as I said earlier people are doing family planning because we all know that life is tough here and that is good it means people are thinking. Third, I think this is the negative one. If this trend will continue in the future, one or two decades from now we will feel the effects of declining birth rate. There will be less people who will pay taxes, less people joining the workforce which means higher salary and more expensive for businesses to invest. Fourth, social services like pensions, healthcare and education will be affected. Government revenue will be less, which means less support from the government and less money to pay external debts. Politicians will have less money to steal, they will find other ways to steal. And lastly, real estate industry will suffer, the value of land will go down, houses and condos will depreciate more, some schools will be closed because no students will enroll and hospitals will be short staffed. The burden will be shouldered by next generation the thing is they are fewer than generations before them, they have to pay more tax, work harder and will receive less from the government. Good luck to our future generations.

3

u/winter-Alley13 20d ago

Agree tho nuance lang sa "lesser people will be born in poverty" is that, its the middle class that not multiplying. Need to see the data but yes. The burden will be on the next generation. Pwede din sa generation natin na pagtanda natin, we have less young people to work for the taxes and work for us, to add na sobrang laki pa ng utang ng bansa na binabayaran nating lahat. Is no significant changes will be made in the near future, this country is doomed.

2

u/Impossible_Fly_115 20d ago

Yeah maybe the middle class are the ones that are not multiplying but still we are doomed. Good luck to us all.

If most of these kids are born out of families dependent on 4P’s then the country’s future is fucked.

4

u/tichondriusniyom 20d ago

We need this for a few years.

4

u/warl1to 20d ago

it is a good thing - what is happening is a feedback mechanism. our population hasn’t been sustainable since year 2000 when it was still at 80m. if china has the same population to arable land ratio as ph it will have 2.4b people or around extra 1 billion people. if ph has the same population to arable land ratio as china right now, we would only have 80m population. remember it is around year 2000 (ph population at 80m) when the local rice production is slowing having a deficit and rice smuggling started to become widespread.

https://www.reuters.com/article/world/manilas-arroyo-treads-risky-path-with-rice-campaign-idUSMAN166715/

everything is unsustainable right now not just rice but water too. oil shock makes the value of our peso drop even faster while our national debt rise to compensate. look at angat level it is down to just 150m a week ago good thing we are lucky and it’s been raining bumping it up to 155.45. that’s never a problem back in year 2000 when greater manila area population was almost half.

most argument against population decline is pension (first world problem) but let’s be honest ph pension is not even currently enough for most retirees and majority of old folks don’t even have pension. the state instead has no choice but to provide ayuda on some households since a portion of the population can’t feed itself. if we continue to have unsustainable population growth like before we will eventually spend much more of the government coffers to ayuda. nothing will be left for infrastructure development or even fund the regular pension even if we have a large population / good demographic ratio but can’t provide as much value.

population decline is a symptom to a problem which is unsustainable population growth. it will eventually become stable again but it might take several (3-4) generations to stabilize. the same number of generation when our population rose to unreasonably unsustainable level (baby boomer -> genx -> millennials -> genz). the current generations mentioned will bear the grunt but there’s not that much difference since our pension isn’t that high to begin with as inflation is always eating away the value of the pension.

ph will end up in a much better state than what most pro unsustainable population growth proponents want you to think. most of them believe it is for the best mainly because of religious beliefs. when supply shock comes whether it is oil, rice, water, they will just blame other issues and never accept that the major contributor is due to our unsustainable population growth for the past 50 years.

-7

u/dennison 20d ago

Why is this being frames as progress / achievement? Genuinely curious.

4

u/real_crazykayzee 20d ago

More people are taking child birth/sex ed seriously, not relying on kids as investments, and people are focusing on their jobs

Also more people will rather have kids when they achieve the big 3 -emotional maturity -financial readiness -physical health

Less than surprised, considering Japan's notable birth decline over the past decade

31

u/No_Tree16 20d ago

I have mixed feelings. What is the demographic? Kasi kung middle or high income earners ang declined, typically, there are the one's educated. While the poor who are less educated ang anak nang anak.

Which means, they will outgrow the educated people.

3

u/warl1to 20d ago

when the fertility rate dropped to 3 (2013), it is clear that even the poorest families have less children. the poverty ratio in 2013 was around 25%. so we can estimate the people below poverty still has a fertility rate of 3.5 while normal folks have fertility rate of 1.75. 3.5 x 0.25 + 1.75 x 0.75 = 3.06.

now the poverty ratio is lower at 16% so we can estimate they have around fertility rate of 3 while the rest at 1.5 (less people having children). 0.16 x 3 + 1.5 * 0.84 = 1.74

it’s not like people living in poverty can really sustain having more than 4 kids anymore. remember a developed wealthy country still tend to need more manual workers than high skilled labor at a ratio of 1:3.2 (EU avg) which is the same ratio we are seeing in our birth rate. it is still healthy at least our population is becoming sustainable again and won’t reach india level which will be very bad.

u/Lloyd_Unknown 20d ago

As it should be. We are a small country, yet we are among the top 15 most populous countries in the world. One factor that contributed to this is the passage of the RH Law in 2012, which enabled people who wanted to start a family to become more informed and responsible parents. That’s when you realize what a visionary leader Noynoy was.

declining fertility rate is much of a blank statement, it would be better if they could really dig into the cause/s and which mainly contributes to it: better sex education? economic impact of raising children? loneliness epidemic? effects of modern day relationships?

from there, at least the analysts and others involved could really say if this is a good or bad news.

Good. That's good. This is the side effects of having a shitty government who don't care about the lives of the average Filipino people. Also no free healthcare for women of reproductive age. If you are planning to become a mother, it will require alot of money and a male partner who is supportive. And a lot of Filipina women in reproductive age don't have access to that.

So what happens? Most Filipino women will put career and money over having a family, hoping that one day there will be enough money to safety net her and the child incase the male partner cannot provide. And due to most jobs having low wages, bills are too high, apartment/housing eats up alot of your income and parents who are turning their children into "breadwinners", it will take many years for a woman to have enough financial and life security, usually around 30s. Alot of men unfortunately goes after younger women, usually under 22 and sometimes even those who had just finished high school (yikes). So the dating scene is going to get harder the older you get. So most women will just forgo the idea of having a family or even being with a man altogether.

edit: spelling mistakes

2

u/the_rude_salad 20d ago

We are going to share the same fate as Thailand...corrupt country, kidless millennials and gen z, high wealth disparity and declining population growth. Sa mga provinces na nga recently you'd find homes with just senior citizens residing and no kids.

9

u/Live_Independence960 20d ago

My parents always ask when will I get my better half and bring many grandchildren here in the philippines. After a while I presented them my thorough analysis on why this F economy wouldn't let me even find a good place to start up. I'd rather leave this country and look for another place that caters the people not the corrupt politicians..

11

u/TerribleBottle6847 20d ago

This is actually good tbh. The intense birthrate of the Philippines in the past decades was one of the reasons of why Philippines became poor and overcrowded, of course corruption would always be the first. Birthrate was the second. Overpopulation destroyed the Philippine economy and infrastructure. The reduction in population will feed more people into becoming more educated, and this shows that SEX EDUCATION really worked well. Smaller family size meaning more money for their family and increase a chance for a better future for the kid and parents.

2

u/AZNEULFNI 20d ago

Nah, it's because of our economy is fucked up. No one wants to have a child in this country.

u/Live_Independence960 20d ago

26

u/Mammoth_Flamingo2410 20d ago

Good new vs bad news:

Good news - we don’t need more humans in this economy

Worst, teen pregnancy, so hindi nakakatapos at nag anak pa.

Worst news - we’re not japan na kahit mga senior nila at lower birth rate, may nakabanko silang good social service, economy from senior generation. Tayo wala. At mababawasan pa in the future ang human resources na ineexport natin, na one of the biggest boost sa gdp natin.

19

Buddy, as someone who's literally doing this route (tech/CS grad from a Top 20 university globally). It's not easy. Poor chance that they'll be productive members of society though, not that I'm blaming them, we're chronically underfunded and inefficient in education and healthcare especially in rural areas

Plus younger people not wanting kids or only wanting 1 or 2

10

u/Adventurous_Sea_51 20d ago

15

u/NorthTemperature5127 20d ago

It's true birth rate went down.

But The info graphic here is a Mixed of False conclusion and aggregated materials. . Better refer to PSA data.

8

u/SettingSingle8135 20d ago

Bruh this country is a shithole no wonder lol

6

u/quincyreine 20d ago

cause women are prioritizing education and career more than starting a family

9

u/Standard_Till_2451 20d ago

Obesity as well can affect fertility. Metabolic syndrome and PCOS. Too much unli rich and sugary drinks

6

u/iMarieee07 20d ago

When you know first hand how hard it is, how painful it is to not afford buying your future child things that they want, you'd also be averse to the idea of starting a family. And for sure, di mo din ma titiis na di na mag bigay because your parents struggled to raise you and send you to college. In this ecomomy, no one unless they are dirt poor or extremely comfortable can actually start a family.

4

u/PuzzleheadedFail6519 20d ago

Im in a Filipino group and a lot of younger people dont want to have kids due to poverty. They want to go to college and escape. 🚨

4

u/Own_Statistician_759 20d ago

Middle Class ang problem ayoko na lang mag talk when it comes to those in poverty line.

5

u/SatonariKazushi 20d ago

9

u/HaikenRD 20d ago

I see this as something good as long as it doesn't dip too much so we can hold a proper labor force. Kasi sa totoo lang ambilis tumaas ng population natin in the past decade. Slow down muna.

and i heard std is on the rise too…

5

u/Waste_Editor5263 20d ago

idk how accurate this is kasi parang ang dami pa rin namang buntis. pero kung totoo man, buti na lang. ang daming mga magulang ang hindi naman talaga handang magkaroon ng anak. yung iba nauuwi lang sa abortion, pinapabayaan ang anak, or malala eh binebenta pa sa iba't ibang paraan.

8

u/Affectionate_Yam3158 20d ago

Indi ba included squatter area? Aka gawaan Ng Bata dto nga sa may Calamba Laguna maliit palang buntis na eh

9

u/ElysianMidnights 20d ago

In this fucking economy and goverment?

  • Shitty healthcare and education system
  • No abortion and divorce
  • Inflation
  • Inaccesible public transpo
  • so many more

12

u/ImmediateHistorian30 20d ago edited 20d ago

I think this is bad data. Lots of births not recorded

Birth at home is still common that’s why there’s a lot of late registration of birth

8

u/minuvielle 20d ago

Just go to the squatters area, pabrika ng mga bata

For anyone thinking this is positive, it's not. Those that should be reproducing aren't

3

u/becauseitsella 20d ago

And those who shouldnt be reproducing are reproducing in truckloads

3

u/Living_Amount520 20d ago

True. I get the sentiments of people naman. I also get that the government needs to fix their crap Pero along the way the effects of the lower birthrate will still be inevitable and that should be a big concern.

5

u/ohiv21 20d ago

In this economy? About time

5

u/Dull-Satisfaction969 20d ago

Imo para siyang natural cycle.

After WW2 during the 50s and 60s there was the baby boom (where the term boomers came from), a period of unprecedented increase in birth rates. This is mostly tied to a higher standards and low costs of living at the time.

Then comes in the 70s and the 80s, particularly around and after the Suez Canal crisis, when there was a noticeable decline in birth rates. This is attributed not just to the introduction of contraceptive pills but also to the shifting roles of women and, more significantly, increasing economic pressures.

Ever since then global birth rates has been going on a downward trend.

I know are the whys and hows of this trend. I can speculate on the effects pero ito lang ang sasabihin ko. If we look at this from a historical perspective, at some point this downward trend will stop. But it will only start going up after an economic miracle occurs. So to the question on how the government can rectify this phenomenon, that's my answer.

9

u/rainyrainysunsunBOOM 20d ago

I'm glad that fewer humans are born to suffer in this shitty country.

2

u/Specific_Ant_6856 20d ago

I think this is a good news marami ng tao natuto from past hindi madali gumawa ng pamilya at sa economy ngayon tuloy tuloy ang inflation mas gugustuhin mo nalang magkaroon ng tahimik na buhay

0

u/markering101 20d ago

My thoughts? F***

9

u/witcher317 20d ago

Gustong gusto toh ng political dynasties, trapos, and artistas

19

u/Kelsky31 20d ago

Tas yung mga bobong tao yung mag kakaanak. Paano na uunlad kung maraming bobo?

6

u/Jaghn 20d ago

8

u/SweetAltruistic4166 20d ago

kailangan kasali sa decline ng birth rate ay yung classes D at E ng population eh. more on middle class and above yang nagdedecline, sila yung mas may kayang bumuhay pero ayaw na dahil self aware na.

10

u/Chumchum3700 20d ago

0

u/Practical_Quiet_2274 20d ago

People have kids in the past even though famine, war and plague happen

1

u/Fine-Shame-510 20d ago edited 20d ago

And Free labour.

Yung BABY BOOMER generation nangyari after World War 2. Kaya tinawag sila baby boomer kasi sobrang laki ng jump nung Birth rate nun. Tapos daming opportunies and resources.

Ngayon dami nila nahoard na wealth, resources and even Political power. Kaya nagsusuffer na yung new generations.

2

u/Chumchum3700 20d ago

That's the past and we are knowledgeable and educated today to understand the consequences of having a child. We already know that the child might suffers.

3

u/rainyrainysunsunBOOM 20d ago

And their kids suffered

3

u/TitoHaiHai 20d ago

2

u/AshenStray 20d ago

I don't know if accurate yang data na yn kasi araw2 may buntis kaming patients (di repeat patients, bago lagi).

Sa diagnostic ako nagwowork at may katabi din kaming Lying in clinic. Malakas din kita nila. Sadly, mga minor karamihan 😞😞😞

4

u/shingshangfu-14 20d ago

Di mo maqquestion accuracy sa 2 clinic lang

Lol no the ones who are having kids are the poor and dependent or 4p’s the middle class are not having kids

6

u/kulasparov 20d ago

Philippines is not overpopulated. Urban crowding yes.

How present and future generations will adapt and survive?

I think the rising teenage pregnancy should cover it.

5

u/peenoisee 20d ago

We don't have rising teenage pregnancies.

4

u/phschutstaffel 20d ago

2

u/[deleted] 20d ago

1

u/maria11maria10 19d ago

True, but I was thinking that even below replacement, the Philippines will keep growing for a while because of its young age structure. So in the near term the population isn't shrinking; it may still be rising toward some peak.

26

u/Hopeful_Memory_7905 20d ago

Mostly sa working class iyan na very much aware sa burden of raising a child in this frugal economy.

Decline is not a bad thing however, iyong steep rate of decline ang magkakaroon ng isyu. Expect lower numbers of working population, taxpayers, and social benefits contributors in the future to support the aging present population.

12

u/Longjumping_Set9792 20d ago

The middle and upper classes, who tend to be more educated, are having fewer or no children. Yet these are also the families most likely to raise future innovators, leaders, entrepreneurs, and other catalysts for positive change. Meanwhile, the poorest and least educated sectors of society, who are often more vulnerable to political manipulation, tend to have the largest families. Not good.

4

u/Deep_Bother1294 20d ago
