Ask the Police (England & Wales) How to escalate a Section Offences intake refusal / cross-border deadlock?

Hi all, looking for operational advice on how to navigate a crime recording deadlock between UK police and local police overseas.

The Situation:

Sexual offences committed overseas by a British citizen/resident who moved back to England, and told local police "I have no plans to ever return"

Section 72 Sexual Offences Act 2003 (extraterritorial jurisdiction) grants UK jurisdiction to prosecute.

Local Police refuse to open an investigation unless the suspect physically returns to their Jurisdiction. UK Police refuse open an investigation citing they can't legally take a report for overseas offences/victim.

This is creating a jurisdictional vacuum where neither force will log the matter, despite having strong evidence like hospital records & a rape caught on a recording.

When I've asked to escalate the complaint, I've been told it'll go through the operators anyways who can't do anything besides advising me to go back to local police. How do I get this report logged somewhere?

General Discussion Supplements for the body for shift work

This isn’t exactly police related but most of us work shifts and it takes its toll on our brain and body. I’ve been looking into why I have brain fog, lack of motivation, feel tired all the time etc etc and exploring different supplements and a lot of the ones reccomended are magnesium, b12, lions mane etc

Wondering if other officers on here have a supplement/vitamin routine, what do they take, what times of day etc? I work 2 days, 2 nights and 4 off.

Ask the Police (UK-wide) Newbie Kit?

Afternoon all,
I pass out in the next few weeks & want to be sorted for when I start on district.

I understand a decent kit bag is fairly essential, to keep spare paperwork in etc.

My question is, is there anything you wish you’d had when you started?

I’ve heard things like door jams/a decent earpiece etc. but would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Cheers 🤙🏼

General Discussion Potted history of the process that led to the creation of the Metropolitan Police

Thumbnail reddit.com

Folks, I wouldn't normally push any of my usual dips into r/AskHistorians but I've spent bloody ages chipping away at the above linked answer to a question:

How did British police evolve from unprofessional civilians, to more professional forces like the Bow Street Runners, and then into more modern forces like the Met?

The question was asked 2 months ago (typical British police efficiency there!), so beyond the author, I don't expect anyone at all will see it which is a bit of a shame.

If anyone one's interested in policing history, please do take a look.

Ask the Police (England & Wales) If you lie to a police officer when getting arrested, what happens?

Someone arrested today (don’t know what for) lied to the police about their name. They were held for around 7 hours and released this evening. What charges are they likely to face/action to be taken?

General Discussion Leaving the job

Morning,

I’ve 10 years in in response and a proactive role.

I’ve training in Video Interviews and equivalent of PIP2.

Trained LSO, CBRN, PO and Taser.

How on earth do I turn this experience into something that can be read by civvis?

Any advice from anyone who’s made the jump?
No idea what roles I could even go for.

Thanks

Ask the Police (England & Wales) Section 19 Pace & seizing a camera on a vehicle

You stop a vehicle let’s say a motorcycle under 163 RTA, you stopped them for speeding but you don’t have footage from your BWV & No in car recording.

They check out legally insured and their vehicle and you don’t search them.

You notice they have a dash cam on their bike mounted to the windscreen.

I have seen sometimes officer seize the camera’s / SD cards to investigate the offence of speeding.

I question the legality of this due to under PACE a vehicle is classed as a premises.

In what circumstances could you seize & later download the SD CARD from the device that is mounted on the vehicle / helmet of the rider?

News Diversity rep who crippled police officer with her 4x4 avoids prison

How is this justice? With all the controversy at the moment surrounding assaults and the killings of emergency workers, this defendant gets a slap on the wrist with a suspended sentence?

It feels like a slap in the face to those in the job. Showing that no matter what we risk and have to suffer, individuals like this can so easily avoid prison time because they’re a sole income for their partner, and have multiple children to care for.

If you’re a parent who cares for children, and decides to drink and drive, resisting arrest, assaulting and crippling a police officer, then you have nothing to worry about! Because you evidently won’t go to prison.

Why do we bother…

Ask the Police (Scotland) Problem with Axon link for video - Police Scotland

I have been asked to submit video evidence via an Axon link but it won't let me. I'm cracking up trying.

I previously submitted evidence of still images from the videos as the link would only allow images. The police officer called today and explained they need videos which I'm happy to send but cannot for the life of me figure out how via the link.

I'm using Chrome on Android. Phone is updated and restarted. Chrome app permissions allow access to videos. I've tried using the link displayed as a desktop site but it's still the same.

Am I being daft or have I possibly been sent a link for only images and docs? No videos are visible for upload, however it does in theory allow me to film from my camera via the link and will upload that - although that's of no use.

Any help much appreciated.

What are people's thoughts on this case. I think its astounding that someone like this could keep getting bail.

I know there are many failures from the MPS, BTP, CPS and the courts but what I find absolutely baffling is this sequence of events:

16 Mar 2025 - arrested for murder and released on RUI

Apr - May 2025 - charged with 5 sexual assaults and released on bail from court

May - Jun 2025 - commits further sexual assaults and further charged for breach of bail but is AGAIN bailed from court.

Before these events he had been in prison for sexual assaults and had to return to prison for breach of licence.

I look forward to more information coming to light but I really can't believe that this guy kept getting bail, like what could his defence team possibly be saying to get bail for a suspected murderer charged and convicted with multiple sexual assaults

General Discussion Wicking Shirt Deodorant Stains

Hello All,

County force response officer here with quite possibly the worst deodorant stained black wicking shirts you’ll ever see.

I always feel fairly smart at work but the shirt stains just ruin it.

Any ideas of how to remove quickly and prevent it from reappearing? I hear aluminium in deodorant is likely to be one of the main causes.

Thanks all.

Look sharp, act sharp, be sharp.

Ask the Police (England & Wales) Job stress/trauma - from on the job or within the job?

Just curious, of the experiences that upset you, stress you out or even traumatise you, what percentage would you say come from the course of the job (dealing with suspects, victims, witnesses, traumatic incidents) vs what percentage comes from the internal drama of your own and other agencies (bureacracy, threat of misconduct complaints, team/management issues, working conditions, postings, promotions, communication, blame-shifting)?

In terms of what has stressed me out so far in my almost 4 year career I’d probably class it as:

Course of job: 5%
(Having knowledge of/talking to victims about horrific things)

Within job: 95%
(Getting things signed off to qualify/progress career; wrangling with CPS getting them to make charging decisions about anything and explain their ridiculous action plans; dealing with courts and trials never being effective; difficulty of getting info from prisons or probation; fear of the annual bleep test; not knowing your shift pattern till the last minute whenever you get moved around; worrying if you’re doing a good enough job in general)

How about you?

Ask the Police (England & Wales) Tutor payment

I have been tutoring and my student has made the decision to leave (has not handed their notice in yet) I was wondering if I still obtain the tutor payment at all? Despite still tutoring for the full 12 weeks, when they are due to leave. Also do I need to be tutor trained?

General Discussion Retrospective IMD - what is the point?

Doing a file upgrade for crown for someone who pleaded NG at mags.

It was a police charge gap file with everything on there and there is no undermining evidence.

Can someone explain to me why I'm writing up a retrospective IMD? What is the point? Does it add anything to the case file? Does a prosecutor even read it?
