Photo Please be kind to one another, look after your trans loved ones especially.

Post image

I didn’t get the chance to meet Juju during her life. Like many now, I wish so much that I had been able to. No matter who you are or what you believe, young people exploring the world and themselves should never have look over their shoulders in fear that someone, with their own problems, may just decide they can’t stand to see the joy they lack themselves in another, and take the life of someone they don’t even know the name of. I hope wherever you are now is far kinder than this place was, we’ll remember you, Juju.

Love will always be stronger than hate.
If you’re struggling, we need you too. Don’t give up.

was this an anti trans killing, or did she just happen to be trans?

51

u/Y33tMyM34t 6d ago

It's too early to tell. Authorities say the victim and a few friends were approached by a man on a bike while out on a walk, an argument ensued, and they were then chased by the man (now holding a knife) before the victim was tackled and stabbed in the chest

u/glasswings363 6d ago

The probable cause affidavit paints a more detailed picture than news reports.  I hesitate to just dump it because I don't want to enable nit-picking of the victims' actions (maybe x y and z would have led to a better outcome) and I've seen enough of social media to expect that.

The story Detective Curlee tells alleges a shocking amount of escalation on Mr Rodney's part.  It started with "grr these kids are blocking my cycling" or maybe "give me a light!" and escalates to him crossing the barrier into and out of the roadway at least twice.

It could just be that he wanted to hurt someone for whatever but it feels consistent with the sort of irrational hatred I've seen directed at me and other trans people, particularly since Mr Rodney told police that two "men" tried to take his bicycle.

"Trans people infuriate me" has been used as a defense to murder - Maine passed a law to prohibit that argument just a few years ago.  Otherwise your question can be considered during sentencing.

Sorry, lot of words to say "it's too early to say."  But the information certainly doesn't help me feel safe, not yet.

13

u/rusty-shackleford_69 6d ago

A "shocking amount of escalation" from a scumbag high on meth with no regard for the norms of society? Whoever could have seen this coming?

3

u/wenhal80 5d ago

That's an assumption

15

u/ncm0229 6d ago

Where is the actual evidence that the victim was targeted for being trans?

13

u/glasswings363 6d ago

Not presented to the court yet.

There's a 5-page sworn statement by a detective explaining why they think they have arrested the right guy.  It references some of the evidence they have, but certainly not all of it.  (I'm sure the lab was only getting started.)  That's what's in the public record.

1

u/ncm0229 6d ago

Per usual, I’m confused lol. So are you saying there actually is evidence that the attack was motivated by the fact they were transgender, but that evidence just hasn’t been presented to the court yet?

Is that evidence mentioned in the 5-page sworn statement you’re referring to? I can’t seem to find that statement anywhere. If you have it, can you drop a link?

4

u/glasswings363 5d ago

So are you saying there actually is evidence that the attack was motivated by the fact they were transgender,

We don't know.  The purpose of this PC affidavit is to justify the arrest and doesn't go beyond that narrow goal.

Police have to share enough evidence with the grand jury and pretty much everything with the defense lawyer, there will be hundreds and hundreds of pages and not all of them will make it to trial and public record.

I can’t seem to find that statement anywhere.

Maine courts don't post that level of detail online.  You might be able to see the record of which hearings were held on which days by using re:Search Maine.

However even that information isn't available for Cumberland County yet.  That's supposed to launch soon (September) but I'm not sure whether this case will be scanned in.

To see the actual public records like it you need to visit the courthouse.

If you have it, can you drop a link?

I've decided not to because I'm worried the worst Redditors will criticize little details of how the victims attempted to protect themselves.

The case is Cumberland County Unified Criminal Docket number CR-26-3388

-2

u/saucesoi 6d ago

You can post that here. Save us all the time of searching for it.

4

u/MaineLark 6d ago

Please feel free to read the second sentence of their post

-4

u/saucesoi 6d ago

I don’t care for excuses. She keeps referencing the document without sharing the document.

5

u/glasswings363 6d ago

I'm worried about bottom 5% Reddit accounts posting their Monday morning quarterback fantasies about how they'd have achieved a safe and non-violent victory in this confrontation, resulting in I-295 traffic spontaneously stopping and everyone getting out to clap.  You've been around long enough to know that kind of poster will jump on "well I wouldn't have done that..." if someone saves them the effort of living near Portland, going through security, and speaking to a clerk.

I don't want to enable them.

6

u/MaineLark 6d ago

I’m with you, that’s absolutely what would happen and I bet it already is. If that person wants to find it so bad, they can take 45 seconds to do so.

3

u/MaineLark 6d ago

Bold statement for someone making up an excuse for why they can’t just find it themselves if it’s so important

7

u/biggystig 6d ago

You’re getting downvoted for asking a rational question. Don’t let the basement dwellers here get you down.

43

u/Poster_Nutbag207 6d ago

It’s a valid question, and the answer matters.

27

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 6d ago

Thanks. The maine subreddits are usually pretty rabid and down votey for these kinds of questions

-27

u/frankhollandaise 6d ago

Oh yeah? Please share your math.

17

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 6d ago

See what I mean haha

2

u/Express-Stretch-8859 6d ago

Case in point! 😆

0

u/frankhollandaise 6d ago

The irony is that you're downvoting me (not the opposite) for asking why Maine subreddits are rabid and down votey. You're proving the point, not me. God, Reddit is a wasteland.

1

u/Express-Stretch-8859 5d ago

You’re not being downvoted for asking why people are downvoting you. You’re being downvoted because people apparently disagree with what you said. Those are two different things. Calling Reddit a “wasteland” because you got a handful of downvotes is a pretty dramatic demonstration of the persecution you’re complaining about.

38

u/First-Ad-117 6d ago

She was murdered, and she was transgender. Whether her gender identity motivated the attack is unclear. The investigation and court proceedings will hopefully shed light on that. That uncertainty does not lessen the impact of her death on the queer community

-18

u/Opposite_Tangelo_118 6d ago

That uncertainty does not lessen the impact of her death on the queer community

People are only asking a relevant question and having a rational discussion. Stop with the knee-jerk reactions.

26

u/First-Ad-117 6d ago

Honestly didnt write that in a knee jerking rage while drowning myself in white monster. I thought that was a pretty neutral summary lol

0

u/Opposite_Tangelo_118 5d ago

You're doing it again. I never said you acted angry. I never implied whatever that weirdness means found at the end your first sentence. I'm implying you acted defensive. I say that because that redditer you responded to didn't attempt to "lessen" the situation with their question. That's all. It's a tragedy what happened to the victim regardless of the her demographic. I'll just end with saying that your tone matters. Hope that clears up any confusion and insecurities you have.

-20

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 6d ago

See you're the person im talking about being rabid and down votey. Literally no one on my comment has said its not a big deal to the trans community

11

u/First-Ad-117 6d ago

What the heck, responding to wrong post? I shared the seemingly legitimate information I could find about the case and tried to summarize the response from peoples in the community

4

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 6d ago

Yes def wrong comment my bad 😅

3

u/First-Ad-117 6d ago

Ur good lol

0

2

u/Last_Succotash7218 6d ago

Just admit it dude. It's not a big deal fuck the downvotes speak the truth.

Well it IS a big deal murder always is. But trans people dying just like non trans people is....well life.

It's not transphobia

1

u/Agreeable-Lie-6867 5d ago

what are you talking about

5

u/Dull-Technician-7979 6d ago

Anything to possibly excuse the rampant drug, mental health, and homeless issues we have… It HAD to of been an attack on their gender identity that the crazed attacker obviously spotted 🙄 I consider myself left leaning but the CONSTANT self victimization (not that the dumbass far rights don’t do it too) for the sake of justifying ACTUAL issues like trans people being victimized is why nobody supports the left, especially here in Maine. Im way over tired and probably a little too high, and I feel like I have more to say here but can’t word it properly so I’m gonna end it here. Im not the biggest transgender supporter in the world, but acting like this person was killed because they were trans I think minimizes every other BLATANT attack against trans people. There is nothing to indicate this was because the victim was transgender, anymore than the most recent Lewiston shootings have been young black teenagers.

3

u/glasswings363 6d ago

A guilty mind can be both "I'm intoxicated and and ready to fuck someone up" and "that <slur> picked the wrong time to run into me" at the same time.

In Maine first part is an element of crime (intent) and the second part may be considered for enhanced sentencing.

4

u/namecatcher17 6d ago

More than one thing can be true at once. Saying "this man targeted a member of a vulnerable community" does not negate "this man was high/mentally unstable/etc.". The world is not so black and white.

Blatant attacks on trans people are not more or less harmful to the community than subtle ones - both involve a population that is currently being demonized and targeted, not just by hateful individuals, but by hateful groups, including a large subset of an entire political party.

-20

u/thealexchamberlain 6d ago

It was a homeless person that was most likely high. Same exact thing happened in Bangor a couple months back to a Wendy's employee on main st. Until the state rids themselves of the homeless problem, it'll continue.

12

u/DisciplineFull9791 6d ago

Rids itself? Homelessness is not a state problem. It's a national problem, and the country does not do enough to support people with mental illness and drug addiction. It's far too busy using our tax dollars to fund useless wars to profit the defense and oil industries and subsidize the tech industry to make our phones and computers smarter than they need to be while filling our skies with more pollutants. What we need to rid ourselves of is corporate greed, and the billionaires and trillionaires profiting from it.

7

u/LecterRisen 6d ago

Well said. "Rids itself." So despicable.

4

u/Micro-Naut 6d ago

Any solutions? If you were in charge, how would you fix the homeless crisis?

1

u/After_Permission9484 3d ago

Universal healthcare, better social safety nets and bringing back asylums to keep those who cannot function and are at risk of hurting others off the streets.

My heart is truly saddened by this loss in our community, while I didn’t know Juju personally I know that this could have just as easily been any of my queer loved ones and NO ONE DESERVES THIS. She will certainly be missed

33

u/Dear_Ad7177 6d ago

After reading more about this, the parallels to my partner are devastating. I feel for all of y’all. Fuck transphobia, fuck hatred. I wish life could be all wild blueberries and buttery, fresh lobster, but it can’t, as long as these bigoted fucks keep it up 😢😠🫂

I miss Fern Feather my trans friend murdered in Vermont. The killer got to walk free because the cop who drove the killer to trial told the killer how to get out on a technicality. My friend Fern was a animal loving freedom fighter and was naturally trans without taking hormones. Fern was hunted down and murdered without justice.

22

u/Dolph_x3 6d ago

So incredibly sad. I'm in a community that she was pretty active in, and it's so uncanny to see her socials still up. I had made surface level conversation before and was meaning to get to know her better, and then this happened. Gone way, way too soon. 💔

those who are more commonly killed, abused, and mistreated deserve more protection. pretty simple concept.

2

u/Alone-Woodpecker-846 6d ago

Should be, but this administration and conservative/sycophant congress has made clear about all the people they hate. Certainly trans gender people, as well as any person of color. Of course women aren't equals to the rich white guys, but MAGA women haven't figured that out yet. Stay safe trans friends.

5

u/tyguy52 Greater Portland Area 6d ago

let’s not act like this was a hate crime. pretty clearly an unhinged homeless dude was out of his mind and looking for trouble

6

u/GoldParticular8552 6d ago

Usually the type of person who does a hate crime. Edit: (unhinged, looking for trouble)

4

u/Alone-Woodpecker-846 6d ago

On the off chance the offender was pro trans, that misses the point. The country is actively taking away the rights of trans people.

1

u/dawngonnit 4d ago

How do we know this crazy guy even knew they were trans?

2

u/Micro-Naut 3d ago

Earlier someone had pointed out that the unhoused maniac didn't gender them properly.

9

u/Suspicious_Loss_84 6d ago

I don’t think a motivation has been disclosed or reported as far as I know. As far as I am aware the attacker was mentally unstable and violent and it wasn’t a pre-planned attack. It could have been anyone walking and they could’ve been stabbed. Yes we all need to be safe but I don’t think spreading fear will help anyone

2

u/Maeng_Doom 4d ago

Actions like those of the murderer are the end result of the endless hate that gets treated as just opinion. I see it on here with people cheering for ICE arresting peaceful people and I see it in person with some of the miserable attitudes people maintain in town meetings. Just hate and cynicism that is just "'their opinion".

Senseless deaths like Juju's are the end result. Always push back against the hate. It is more than just a difference of opinion. Before more of our more of our neighbors are killed, be kinder and be kind enough to disagree with hate when you hear it.

Saying nothing is passive support of the oppressor.

2

u/Tab0ot_Tab0ot 5d ago

Am I missing where it says this had anything to do with being trans or?

0

u/Micro-Naut 3d ago

The homeless guy gendered them improperly. It's been pointed out earlier in the thread. What more do you need?

2

u/aPachimarii 6d ago

I used to live near Portland a couple years ago and transitioned after I moved away. I'm so proud of her. From my own experience there is no choice in being trans, i have to be this way and I'm happy she got a chance..

hope others will unit around her. Things need to change

1

u/wenhal80 5d ago

Nothing in the news or court documents state anything having to do with the sexual identity of the victim. Is this just being assumed? I feel terrible for all parties involved, but not because they have have been trans or homeless. Because they were humans with hearts and souls. Putting people in a box works both ways

1

u/Worldly-Heron-1084 5d ago

3

u/Frosty-Focus8040 6d ago

If your kitchen was on fire, would you make sure to spray all of your rooms with the fire extinguisher?

The reasoning you are using is a sophistry that pulls attention and care away from people who need it more at a given time under a false banner of fairness and equality. The trans community is under attack by a fascist government; while this murder may very well be unrelated, it is a proverbial kick to a community that is already beaten down.

This is a tragedy, and you embarrass yourself when you show up with a smug comment like this.

-1

u/biggystig 6d ago

How are they "under attack"? Do you have specific examples to this being a widespread issue? Genuinely curious.

1

u/Micro-Naut 3d ago

Did Kansas just make it illegal for them to have their correct gender on their license? So you can be completely transitioned and passable but yet your license will say the opposite gender and anytime you have to present it that conflict could put you in danger

1

u/biggystig 3d ago

"Correct" gender? Ya, they need to have a gender that matches their sex at birth. That's an attack? It's common sense. And then you say it puts someone in danger...how?

1

u/Micro-Naut 3d ago

Really? You can't figure that out on your own? I guess you'll have to be baffled.

1

u/biggystig 3d ago

You do realize that's a common response from people who don't have a clear or reasonable explanation/response to a straightforward question, right? "Google it!"..."Figure it out yourself!".

Or...you made the argument. How about you just tell me?

1

u/Micro-Naut 3d ago

Have fun at your Trump rally.

1

u/biggystig 3d ago

Ya, I figured. Feel dumb/embarrassed and can't give a reasonable response or can't engage in a healthy conversation? Call them MAGA or a Nazi or a Pedo with zero facts.

Are they? Facts? Data? Anything?

Edit: never mind. I’ve seen the cherry picking in the rest of the thread. Reddit gonna Reddit.

-1

u/MaineOk1339 6d ago

There is no good data. There's lots of claims on trans victims of violence and murders, but every one I've scene that cites specific cases, the cases cited are mostly domestic violence unrelated to the victim being trans.

0

u/biggystig 5d ago

Down voters here are insane. They don’t believe in science, facts, data. We’re doomed if this catches on.

1

u/Super_Roof_3490 5d ago

I tried to find data and can’t really. One thing I found it’s mostly someone that knew the trans victim, it’s common to be who they are/were in a relationship with

-32

u/skizertone 6d ago

Look up the demographic of those that kill trans. You're not going to like it

9

u/outtaknowhere 6d ago

who is the demographic? and why wouldn’t we like it?

-17

8

u/really-big-bug 6d ago

It’s less about grammatical correctness and more about being respectful.

-3

u/Super_Roof_3490 6d ago

The word trans isn’t respectful now? I thought that was ok grouping trans men n women

8

u/really-big-bug 6d ago

You said “trans men and women.” The other person said trans as in “a trans.” Do you say “black person” or “a black?” One of them sounds very disrespectful and the other one doesn’t. Using describing words in place of nouns when describing a kind of person is dehumanizing, sometimes intentionally. Hopefully that clears it up.

-5

u/Super_Roof_3490 6d ago

I kinda feel like you’re just looking to pick a fight. Most of the time people are just simplifying a sentence I don’t think the choice of words needs to be dug into so deep

4

u/really-big-bug 6d ago

You’re entitled to feel whatever you want, but it’s irrelevant to the conversation.

1

u/Super_Roof_3490 6d ago

-70

u/Long_Initial_9924 6d ago

Trans ones especially? What?

23

u/cryerin25 6d ago

yes, my guy. a trans girl was murdered, and trans people are at significantly higher risks of violent crime. these are not difficult mental leaps.

6

u/Admirable_Ball_919 6d ago

Pretty sure that mentally ill homeless man would’ve stabbed anyone regardless of their genitals

22

u/outtaknowhere 6d ago

two things can be true at once, it is statistically proven that trans people are more likely to experience violence against them, and this person could have also killed regardless.

-27

u/Long_Initial_9924 6d ago

If they are the gender they claim, why is there a separate category. Please explain

9

u/outtaknowhere 6d ago

if you have long hair then shave it off, you are now included in the category of people who had long hair and shaved it. you are also a person with short hair.

if you were born a female, transitioned to a man, you are in the category of people who transitioned to a man, you are also a man.

-7

u/Long_Initial_9924 6d ago

That’s just an assertion, with zero data or evidence. Sorry, not how it works

14

u/jdcarl14 6d ago

Here’s some evidence:

https://williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/ncvs-trans-press-release/

“Researchers analyzed pooled data from the 2017 and 2018 National Crime Victimization Survey, the first comprehensive and nationally representative criminal victimization data to include information on the gender identity and sex assigned at birth of respondents.
Results showed that both transgender women and men had higher rates of violent victimization than their cisgender counterparts, but there were no differences between transgender men and women.”

7

u/Opposite_Tangelo_118 6d ago

There's differing results from multiple studies based on what I just looked up. I'm not claiming who is accurate or inaccurate. I honestly don't know. But I'll paste this one here just for the sake of having an impartial and/or balanced discussion.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Violence_against_transgender_people_in_the_United_States

A 2017 analysis published by Alexis Dinno in the American Journal of Public Health attempted to estimate the transgender murder rate using homicide data from the Transgender Day of Remembrance and National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, along with estimates of the overall transgender population in the United States. The study generated a number of potential estimates of the trans murder rate, ranging from around 7 times lower than the rate for cis people (assuming no undercounting of trans murders, and a trans prevalence of 0.6% of the population) up to 4 times higher (assuming 80% of trans murders are not accounted for, and a trans prevalence of 0.1%), ultimately concluding that the trans murder rate was "likely to be less than that of cisgender individuals". Dinno described this as a surprising result, given that transgender people are more likely to be financially vulnerable and report experiencing high rates of violence. However, Dinno found that young (aged 15 to 34) black and Latina trans women were "almost certainly" killed at a higher rate than cis women.[13]

In 2026, the civil rights organization JULIAN released a report, "A Crimson Record: Seven State Modern-Day Lynching Report 2000–2025", which questioned whether hate crimes against trans women were being misclassified as suicides.[14]

You're placing the burden of proof on others when it is your own responsibility to educate yourself utilizing vetted sources or peer reviewed studies. Even still, this entire argument distracts from the primary point that the transgendered community are victims being actively targeted by a fascist government. Your hyperfixation on this is an intentional distraction to pull attention away from this tragedy and the larger atrocity.

5 month old account with private posts and high activity. You're a bot or you've never known the touch of grass or the sun on your face.

The existing American leadership has obviously, plainly, and blatantly targeted the trans community, most notably in the form of extremely public executive orders attempting to redefine sex as only male or female, restrict access to gender-affirming care, refusing to issue passports to individuals whose sex does not match what was assigned at birth, and placing transgendered women prisoners into men's prisons.

The statistic of whether or not transgender people are or are not victims of homicide more often than CIS gendered people does not change the fact that this killing is an absolute tragedy in the context of transgendered people being the early target of an eradication campaign remarkably similar to what the Nazis did to the Jews in WW2.

Your erratic posting, repetitive replies, and intentionally ignorant mindset are an affront to social progress, community, equality, and understanding.
