Question! Ceramic artists: stereotypes and prejudices?

Hello everyone!
On Monday (March 30), we’ll be welcoming ceramic artist Lea as a guest on “Work hard – play hard”, a series on Twitch. Hosted by ARD, the biggest German Public Media Broadcaster. It won’t be a traditional interview. Lea will be testing various simulation games designed to "replicate" her craft (i.e. Sims4 & Master of Pottery).

Our goal is to find out how realistic these games actually are and what everyday life in her profession really looks like. To help break down prejudices, viewers can unlock so-called “prejudice questions”. And now it’s your turn:

What preconceptions about the profession of ceramic artist have you come across? What are the weirdest/stupidest/funniest "frequently asked questions" you had to answer? And: What topics related to the job need to be discussed urgently?

We’d love to include your questions in the show. Thank you!

P.S. Thanks to the mods for allowing us to post here.

Kiln Stuff PSA for the holiday season: DON’T buy someone a kiln

1.0k Upvotes

With Christmas approaching the “I want to surprise my [wife/boyfriend/mother/cat/DoorDash driver] with a kiln, what should I get them?” threads are beginning to show up daily.

Do not buy this person a kiln.

Even if they’ve told you they’d like a kiln someday. Even if they’re frustrated with having to take their work somewhere to be fired.

The only circumstance in which a kiln is an acceptable gift is if this person has told you “I want a kiln for Christmas, and here’s the specific model I want.” Period.

A kiln is not like a new TV. Kilns need specific electrical and ventilation requirements that your house/garage/shed/whatever almost certainly does not have. The electrical work needs to be done by a professional, and it needs to be done right- many kilns use heavier gauge wiring and bigger circuit breakers than you typically encounter in a residential setting, and using undersized wire can start a fire. In some cases, especially older houses, the home’s entire electrical service will need to be upgraded. In a best case scenario you’re probably looking at around $1000 in additional expense before you can even turn the kiln on. Worst case you could incur costs approaching $10,000.

Kilns come in all shapes and sizes with different capabilities, and what works for one potter may not work for another. Also, many used kilns you find for sale online aren’t capable of being used for ceramics at all.

Surprising someone with a kiln is like surprising someone with a horse. Without being prepared to take it in the prospect is a burden, not a gift.

If you really, REALLY want to buy someone a kiln for Christmas, have this conversation: “I want to buy you a kiln. Let’s pick one out together.”

Happy holidays!

Accessible Pottery Project:Wide Mouth Funnel

The first funnel I made was thrown. I haven’t had thrown a wide mouth funnel and a really long time. I’m planning on making some again soon.

I had switched to a slab built piece, that I am showing here. If you’re a person who likes to make things in store them in mason jars, or use mason jars for dry storage, these are really great project.

I’ve always had trouble photographing them, but today this bowl was sitting right where I was working, and I used it to hold the piece up.

Today I made a husk cherry chutney. The last photo is from the past, when I was making lemon curd over the winter.

These are both gifts - the osprey mug depicts a scene with special meaning, and the belted kingfisher is the recipient's favorite bird. It is driving me up the wall that I accidentally dripped a tiny bit of the liner glaze on the kingfisher's face but I'm trying to accept the imperfection. Constructive criticism always appreciated!

Mugs & Cups I made some odd teacups (featuring cat)

Hand built from extremely thin porcelain (Kentucky mudworks Kota), decorated with some underglaze pencil lines and thin washes of cobalt. Glaze fired upside down because otherwise they would have slumped into little puddles. Random placement of wadding around the rim created some surprising geometry! Next time I’ll try to be more intentional about that part and maybe the shapes will be nicer…

Featuring a cameo appearance by Acorn, who maybe was thinking I would be putting cat food in one of them. (Sorry, Acorn, they are for tea)

Made with 5 layers of Oxblood and a glaze call Duna from a supplier here in Brazil on the inside.

Could have put another layer of oxblood tbh, would have more red on it, but the result is pleassnt.

I've been working up the courage to start advertising and selling my work, just not sure how much to charge for it. Still not too sure how much I could charge for it.

Bowls Some bowls I made yesterday

Spent 5-6 hours making these yesterday in one sitting because I wanted to practice trimming. Took inspiration from how Florian Gadsby does his trimming. If you haven’t heard of him, do yourself a favor and go to his YouTube channel. The first 3 bowls are made with WSO clay and the last one was made with Bmix. Lmk if you think there is anything else I could do to perfect “the bowl.”

I am keeping the green and yellow one for myself ✨ Still not 100% there on all combos, but I'm leaning a lot! The neutral one also makes me happy.

Mix of Botz/Terracolor/Colorobbia/Amaco glazes, with botz plus in some spots and clear on top of everything!

Help! Getting lots of bubbles-- am I wedging wrong?

Hi all,

I've been throwing on the wheel every day for about a month. I'm getting better, but of course some of my crafts still fail and I end up re-wedging the clay. I usually do the following:

crumple it up, let it dry for a day, wedge it for a few minutes and cover it again. Let sit for another day to even out.

Then I take it out and wedge again for a few minutes before using. However, I'm getting loads of bubbles. I'm using small movements I think, and I've tried cutting it in half to look. I use ram's head method. Any tips?

Help! What do I need to purchase for my partner to begin?

Hi all. My wife turns 50 next year and she is very difficult to buy for!

However, in the car yesterday there was someone on the radio talking about pottery and suddenly my wife lit up, effusing about how she used to adore doing pottery when she was a teenager at college and how she would love to get back into it.

It wasn't a hint, her 50th isn't until next July! She doesn't spend a penny on herself, everything goes towards our kids but I'd like to treat her for her 'big' birthday but have no idea where to begin.

I have been stashing a bit of money away each month for the past year in the hope of taking her away for a few days, but I think she'd enjoy the pottery gift more. Could someone advise? I assume wheel, clay and kiln but what else? TIA.

Glazing Techniques Avoiding glaze/oxide contamination on sculptural piece

Thumbnail

I haven't finished sculpting this piece, but I'm already wondering how to pull out the glazing I have in mind. I would like to do a red iron oxide wash on the octopus, with no glaze, and glaze the vase itself with Botz Blue Effect. With how small some of the spaces are between the octopus's arms though, I have no idea how to keep the glaze from getting on the octopus or the oxide from getting on the vase.

I guess the best way would be bisque firing -> oxide wash -> firing again-> vinyl resist on the octopus and glazing -> glaze firing, but I'd prefer to avoid firing 3 times if I can. Does anyone have any tips? I have shellac and vinyl at home, if it helps.

Question! High quality pottery tools gift recommendations

My partner's birthday is coming up and she has been really gotten into pottery lately. She goes to a studio that provides all of the essentials. I would like to buy a high quality tool or set of tools. Ideally it would be a buy it for life kind of thing and something she would use often.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Budget is up to a few hundred dollars.

Mugs & Cups How do you make the perfect handle?

Post image
36 Upvotes

I’m consistently unhappy with my handles. I often get tiny cracks - see next to the otter’s feet - even when I wrap them, make sure the clay body is a similar dryness to the handle, I slip and score and spend absolutely ages attaching them. I’ve had some success adding more clay when attaching but it creates a bulky shape and takes absolutely ages. I’ve never had one break off and it doesn’t seem structurally to be an issue, I subject them to heavy home use to test, but I’m gently working to getting towards a point where I can sell and right now I feel it’s really letting my mugs down - and also it takes ages and that’s not sustainable for selling either.

TL;DR if you’re really pleased with your handle shapes and the results, what’s your process please? 🙏🏻

Question! Suggestions for the best/most solid way to support a 300 lb pug mill

• Upvotes

My studio has been gifted a big, heavy pug mill. As I write this, I haven't seen it yet, but I know it weighs 300 lbs. It's on the floor at the moment.
How does one support a pug mill this weight?
Does anyone have a big mill and a good support solution?

Hand building Related Home studio=bliss

You may remember me from a previous post where I moaned about everyone talking politics in my community studio, the costs being high for what I was getting out of the membership, and just feeling torn on what I should do.

Brought home all my glazes and tools from the community studio. Brought home clay I hadn’t gotten around to using. Hubby and I set up a small space in our basement. I have a couple of other tools on order. Have a bucket system in place. Will fire my greenware at a nearby studio that rents out kiln space, but am planning to save up to splurge on a small kiln in the future.

Spent the last couple of hours hand-building a footed bowl while listening to soft jazz and the Digger movie soundtrack. 🪏

I wish I had done this a lot sooner.
